Statement by Gov Corzine on Stimulus Bill

Governor Jon S. Corzine today made the following comments on the federal stimulus bills being considered by Congress:

Both of the packages are significantly better than doing nothing. There are pieces in each one that are preferable from our point of view. The most important thing to do right now is get this package out into the economy. There is an incredible recession in place. We see it in the unemployment numbers last Friday. We have seen it here in New Jersey. The foreclosure problem continues. The challenges for people in their everyday lives is really significant.

Getting moving is essential because this is as much about confidence. The public has a need to see that we can recognize a problem and act. We came together in Trenton in October to address some of these things. Its not big enough to stand against the national program. We need the federal government to act.

Apart from his work on the federal stimulus, Governor Corzine has advanced several efforts of the economic assistance and recovery plan he introduced last October to stimulate New Jerseys economy, combat hunger, provide home energy assistance, and take proactive initiatives to prevent home foreclosures all in response to the slumping national economy.
