Jerusalem Mayor Leon Visits Geula Neighborhood; Confronted Over Filth in Area [PHOTOS]

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon on Tuesday morning visited the Geula area of the capital, escorted by Deputy Mayor Yossi Deutsch and a team of city officials, most from the sanitation department.

The visit took place early, at about 7:00 AM, when the streets of the frum neighborhood were quite empty. In the prepared media release, it is written the mayor was impressed with the cleanliness of the area, but YWN-Israel was there, and saw how a number of angry residents approached the group and shouted at Leon, explaining the community is as dirty as ever and there is much to do to improve.

The mayor spoke with sanitation department employees who pick up the garbage, asking them what can be done to improve the situation.

Deutsch told Kol Chai Radio that the mayor has allocated the resources to pick up all the trash ahead of Pesach towards leaving the community clean on yomtov. For a first time, the city hired 12 cranes used to pick up garbage and abandoned items.

Deutsch told Kol Chai, “Much work must be done to get the city clean for Pesach. The sanitation teams are working around-the-clock to remove 2500 tons of trash, twice the norm. I call on the residents to place items they are abandoning outside in time for collection, ahead of yomtov”.

Another first, garbage pickup will take place on motzei Shabbos first day yomtov and last day instead of on Sunday morning.

  1. It appears to me that in cleaning their houses for Pesach ,people in Jerusalem just throw everything they don’t want and trash into the courtyards, sidewalks, streets ,etc. instead of bothering with the trash bins.

  2. It reminds if recent complaints by riders of the Long Island Railroad about why the LIRR wasn’t faster in cleaning up newspapers and coffee cups left on trains. The question really should have been why do passengers throw stuff on the floor and not in garbage cans.
Similarly, the residents of Geula have to ask themselves how the garbage got there in the first place.

  3. obviously the previous commentators don’t live in y-m or near geula, if they would know that every trash is filled to the top or over. except for the underground garbage cans, which half of the things don’t fit in. add to that all the trash all the passerbys , leave a wrapper here a cup etc. it isn’t the residents, who suffer.
BUT not to worry Moishe Leon will take care of everything, that is the reason all the gedolim said to vote for him
