An Israeli woman has been detained in Turkey for more than 10 days on suspicion of insulting the Turkish flag, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and “Palestine.”

The woman was taken into custody in Taksim Square, a central hub in Istanbul, after being handcuffed by police, according to photos circulating on social media. Israeli outlet Ynet reported Sunday that she has remained under arrest since then.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it is aware of the case. “The case is recognized and being handled by the Department for Israelis Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the ministry said in a statement cited by Ynet. The woman’s family has been notified, and she is believed to have traveled to Turkey alone.

The detention comes amid sharply deteriorating relations between Israel and Turkey, fueled by Ankara’s increasingly confrontational posture toward Jerusalem. Erdoğan has been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and has embraced rhetoric that Israeli officials say has helped normalize hostility toward the Jewish state inside Turkey.

Israeli officials and Jewish organizations have repeatedly warned about rising antisemitic imagery and messaging in Turkish media, particularly outlets aligned with Erdoğan’s government, arguing that the tone from the top has contributed to an increasingly hostile environment for Israelis and Jews.
