Police Warn Jerusalem Mayor Barkat

nb1.jpgPolice have warned Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, fearing he may be targeted by extremists in the ongoing ‘war’ surrounding the operating of Karta parking lot in the capital on shabbos.

The mayor was recently targeted by a small number of extremists identified with the chareidi community when he left a meeting with the Kalever Rebbe Shlita. The mayor was targeted with rocks. Baruch Hashem no one was injured, but the media used the incident, which was perpetrated by a handful of extremists, to further besmirch the chareidi community, whose leadership has come out repeatedly deploring acts of violence.

The daily Yisrael HaYom reports on Sunday that Jerusalem District police and ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) officials have decided to minimize the mayor’s appearances in chareidi areas for the time being, fearing for his life. Police are also stepping up protection for the mayor outside his Jerusalem home, located in the Beit HaKerem neighborhood.

City Hall released a statement that as one would expect, officials are not commenting on matters pertaining to the mayor’s security.

Au contraire – it’s the perpetrators themselves who “besmirch” the chareidi community – and the chareidi leadership has been as active in putting a stop to this as was the NYPD in stopping the Crown Heights rioting 18 years ago. We’d all be a lot healthier if we honestly confronted the scope of this problem – it’s not merely a few bad apples.
