Abu Mazen: Talks Will Resume With Recognition of Pre-’67 Borders

abbas1.jpgPA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) announced that he is not about to back down from his demands, unwilling to return to the negotiating table with Israel until such the international community announces its acceptance of the pre-June 1967 boundaries as the border of the future Palestinian state and Israel must cease any and all settlement construction.

Speaking at a PLO conference in Ramallah on Tuesday, the Fatah faction leader stated these are his preconditions, and he remains unwilling to return to the negotiating table with Israel for as long as the international community remains unwilling to recognize the eastern portions of Jerusalem, the areas liberated in the Six Day War, as an integral portion of the future State of Palestine.

Abu Mazen, in his customary way, pointed an accusing finger at Israel, blaming Jerusalem for the breakdown in the diplomatic process for Jerusalem is unwilling to halt all “illegal construction” and Jerusalem is failing to fulfill her obligations under the Roadmap Plan.

Abu Mazen added that the prime minister’s 10-month building freeze is not realistic, since construction is still ongoing.

Interestingly, opponents of the construction freeze have warned the government that in addition to harming the nation’s interests and addressing the critical housing shortage, it voted to accept a construction freeze which at the end of the day will be deemed “unacceptable” by the PA, which seems to be the case.

  1. If they have stopped claiming any the territory Israel help prior to the Six Day War (the 1949-1967 borders) that is a hiddush. Even the US does not recognize that (the US holds the West Jerusalem is not part of Israel, which is why the embassy is in Tel Aviv).

Israel can offer to exchange populations, or pay for settlements, or swap anti-zionist Muslim communities in the 1949-1967 borders for Jewish communities in the West Bank, etc.

However, the Arabs agreeing on the pre-1967 border is really a major development (and I suspect that one that most Arab countries and groups would reject).

  2. the us and the rest of the world and there good arabs do not have to recognize any thing that is the land of israel it is the land of israel any way you slice the cake

  3. I SUGGEST WE GO BACK TO THE PRE 1923 BORDERS WHEN THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A PALASTINIAN AND TELL THEM ALL TO GO BACK TO IRAQ!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE WHAT OBAMA WOULD SAY IF ENGLAND DEMANDED BACK THEIR PROPERTY THEY LOST IN A WAR?
