Report: PM Seeking Rav Ovadia’s Support for Attack Against Iran

A senior defense community official was escorted in to meet with Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita on erev shabbos by Shas leader Deputy Prime Minister/Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Kikar Shabbat reports. The senior unnamed official was brought into the rav’s Har Nof home under a veil of secrecy, meeting with the gadol hador for an hour and focusing on the fact that Israel may be compelled to act alone in a military strike against Iran.

The Kikar report explains the meeting is part of the pressure campaign by the prime minister, seeking the support of chareidi parties for a strike against Iran, particularly the rav’s for his approval will lead to party cabinet ministers supporting such an operation as well.

It should be pointed out that Rav Yosef on Sunday, 2 Rosh Chodesh Elul 5772 spoke of “our difficult situation” in a shiur, adding that “we are in Elul and it is time for tshuva”.

“We are in a terrible situation. The second Haman is also from Persia and he too is plotting against us”, stated Chacham Ovadia Shlita. The rav added

“…אין לנו על מי להישען אלא על אבינו שבשמים”.

It is also reported that a senior emissary representing the prime minister met last week with the Belzer Rebbe Shlita, seemingly in line with reports the prime minister is looking for widespread chareidi support should he order an attack. The rebbe spoke with the senior minister of over an hour.

  1. Of course, a prolonged war requiring the army to be fully mobilized for a long time, similar to 1947-1949, or 1939-1945, will make it much easier to justify conscripting Hareidim, especially if the hilonim can point to frum rabbanim and say it was there idea to start the war.

  2. Its about time they went to a gadol to get the advise, although I am a bit surprised they haven’t sought Rav Chaim advice yet.

They didnt ask for your advice who to consult, and the secularists definition of who to seek advice from is not our concern, Lev melochim vesorim beyad Hashem and he guides them to the correct source of advice, so your surprise is directed at kavayachol!
