Malcolm Hoenlein Tells Nachum Segal It Was Not His Decision to Disinvite Palin Sep 19, 2008 9:26 AM

The Nachum Segal Radio Show interviewed Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, who called in live for the latest Weekly Update. In light of the controversy regarding this Monday’s rally at the United Nations vis a vis the attendance of Senator Hillary Clinton and Governor Sarah Palin, Nachum had Malcolm respond to an article in The New York Times and set the record straight. Malcolm explained how Senator Clinton and Governor Palin originally got involved in the rally and what transpired to result in neither attending. Malcolm Hoenlein stressed that it was not his decision to disinvite Governor Palin to Monday’s rally. Malcolm continues to emphasize the importance of taking part in the rally on Monday, September 22, and to not get sidetracked by the accompanying political goings-on, losing sight of the goal which is to stand up to terror and Iran’s President Ahmadinejad. Nachum recommended that the listeners contact Senator Clinton’s office and express their feelings for her refusing to attend the rally. Click HERE to listen.

Statement by Rambam Mesivta:

The approximately 200 students of the Rambam Mesivta High School, accompanied by teachers, administrators and parents, plan to demonstrate against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran during his planned speech before a number of religious organizations, including the Mennonite Central Committee, Quaker United Nations Office, Religions for Peace and World Council of Churches. Hundreds will join the demonstration which will be held on Thursday, September 25th, at 5:30 pm outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel, 109 East 42nd Street, New York, where Ahmadinejad has been invited to speak. The demonstration will also protest the religious organizations’ decision to invite and host Ahmadinejad. A number of members from the New York City Council , State Assembly and Congress will address the crowd.

Ahmadinejad has publicly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” and has spoken wishfully of “a world without America”. He has said that “Iran is ready to transfer nuclear know-how to the Islamic countries due to their need.” Iran has also been repeatedly accused by the administration of providing training and support for various Iraqi insurgent groups who murder U.S. servicemen and Iraqi civilians. According to some news reports, Ahmadinejad was a student leader who was deeply involved in the takeover of the U.S. embassy compound in Iran and the subsequent Iran hostage crisis in November 1979.

According to Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, the Rosh HaYeshiva (Head of School) of Rambam, “what do these organizations need to hear from Ahmadinejad that he has not already said? Moreover, the thought of religious organizations affording this man a platform for his ideas is truly obnoxious, and a betrayal by these organizations of their core religious values. How can they claim to be ‘working for a more just, equitable and peaceful world’ and speak of their ‘commitment to non-violence in thought, word and deed’ when they invite a man who calls for another country to be ‘wiped off the map’ and who sponsors the murder of US servicemen in Iraq?”

“We are appalled at the thought of religious organizations inviting this man,” says Rabbi Yotav Eliach, Rambam’s Principal. “Quakers claim to live ‘simply and truthfully’. Is it ‘truthful’ to afford a platform to a sponsor of international terrorism under the guise of ‘peace’? Is Iran truly seeking a just, equitable and peaceful world? Is that truthful?”

  1. What will be accomplished by wasting our time and going to this rally?

Will Ahmdinijad get scared and run home and never bother Jews again?

  2. #1

You’re right. Nothing will change-especially if Obumma comes into offc.

Obumma will make change-till now, nobody helped Iran fight Israel-with Obumma in offc-he’ll make sure Iran is helped…

P.s Look @ the ad on YW. Scared of Obama? Good reason to be.

  3. How come sara palin was told not to come? It was very stupid on our part for doing that! Now we really dont have a chance! WE BLEW IT!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all the orginizations that are supporting this, the Rabonim should have stuck up on this, & besides the point- its a BIG Chillul Hashem!

  4. A Yom Tefila with an emphasis on chessed would have more of an effect then any rally possibly can.
Gedolim of past generations never wanted us to push our way into the national consciousness. Everything that was accomplished was done quietly
Pasrshas Vayishlach is what we follow when meeting a goy. We do not use thier tools we use the ones Hashem endowed us with which is the KOl Yaakov

  5. Where was the Agudah for last year’s rally?
To #8 – OK, tell us what extra chesed and tefila you have done to stop this Rasha. By the way – doing nothing did not seem to work in 1939. Maybe we should try something different this time.
All this apathy about the rally is pure atzlus.

  6. don’t thik the aguda’s decision to participate was an ez one as the gedolim don’t join these things haphazzardly. if they don’t join its for a darned good reason.

  7. Can anyone tell me why they do these things right in middle of the day? I want to go but I cant miss a whole monday morning of work for this

  8. #8-Gedolim of past generations never wanted us to push our way into the national consciousness

Funny you should mention that I believe Agudas Yisroel (which was started by the Chofetz Chaim and R’ Chaim Ozer Grodzensky) had seats in the Polish government from 1919-1939 …..
And if memory serves I believe we do have Hareidi Knesset members who (I hope) operate according to Daas Torah….

  9. Actually, I think the Aguda is straddling the fence brilliantly! Read what they say. They are not saying to go. They are just saying there will be a rally. They are also not saying not to go. For those saying we should have Yom Tefila, the Aguda isn’t saying that either.
What are they standing for here? It doesn’t seem like they want to take a stand about anything.

  10. #15 you are correct. The Aguda’s muted and quite belated tepid support of the rally appears to satisfy those that may complain why they did not support it, while simultaneously bowing to the anti-rally camp. When the Aguda really wants a large turn out, they have no problem launching a sophisticated and aggressive media campaign. In this case, they simply wanted to escape criticism for not joining in the rally without really joining in the rally.

  11. Just got back from the rally. Sorry to say – no chareidim there. Can someone explain why Pomegranate, the Bronx Zoo and Great Adventures draws chareidim, but standing up to a sonei Yisroel who endangers Eretz Yiroel does not.

  12. Sane, I was there also. My father was there with his jacket and black hat. My father was not the only black hat there. There were a few charaidim where I was, but not that many. People forget that when the Nazis y”s lined people up, they didn’t ask where a person davened. I don’t think this was only a Jewish matter. This madman wants to destroy all Muslems. Even Muslems who don’t beleive exactly like him.
What did you think of the turn out? About the same as last year, no?
