KosherToday: Tootsie Roll, Gatorade Will Soon Have Major Kosher Certification

gator.jpgAlthough there is yet to be a formal announcement, sources told KosherToday that Tootsie Roll and Gatorade will be the next icon food brands to acquire a major kosher symbol. For kosher consumers, such news has become less frequent than in the 90’s and early 2000’s when many major brands made the move. They included Nabisco’s Oreos, Keebler, Entenmann’s and other national brands that kosher consumers had considered “forbidden fruits.” More recent members of the club include Topp’s Bazooka and Jelly Belly.

Tootsie Roll, a Chicago-based company, has grown to become one of the country’s largest candy companies, with operations throughout North America and with distribution channels in more than 75 countries.

totr.jpgGatorade is a brand of flavored non-carbonated sports drinks manufactured by the Quaker Oats Company, now a division of PepsiCo. Pepsi’s competitor PowerAde, owned by the Coca-Cola Co., has OU certification.

Kosher sources explain that news of a major brand going kosher is rare these days “since most of them already have a major kosher symbol.” One certification agency told Kosher Today: “We are rapidly approaching the day when every major US food brand that can be kosher certified will be kosher.”

  1. Jelly Belly has always had a hecsher. It had the triangle k. Now it has the OU. You article did not list the tootse roll products. Right now there are fake hecsharim on tootsie roll how will we know the difference?

  2. V’chein yirbu!
It’s a shame my kids will never know the Kosher Liber’s Gum that cracked in a million pieces when you opened the wrapper.

  3. Actually Jelly Belly had the Ko hechsher, not Triangle-K.

I believe the article was referring to brands that made a switch to a widely accepted national hashgachah, of which Ko is surely not.

And tootsie rolls do not have a “fake hechsher”, they do not have any hechsher.

  4. 2, Jelly Belly had Ko from Philly which is the same as k’ilu lo ha’ya shom! We tend not to use hashgochas run by those who have “renounced” their k’huna so they could preform l’vayas. Or those we are matir just about anything for that matter.

  5. I am hearing the Gatorade will initially only for the east coast as it is made in many places and being that it is packed HOT unlike soda which is packed COLD, they do need hashgocha on the bottling level.

  6. Joseph,
The CRC Chicago website has recently upgraded Red Bull to “acceptable.” The “Red Bull Shots” are still not recommended. Check them out at their web site.

    And bigkhuna,
KO is not a frum hashgocho. I believe they are “traditional.”

  7. what hashgacha is Tootsie Roll getting?
when should we start looking for it?
will it only be in some geographic areas and not others?

  8. da traifa medina is now the kosher medina! btw when we were kids in the 60’s and 70’s werent all candy bars kosher? (especially good n plenty!)

  9. I remember when I first stared keeping kosher( around 2000) a favorite product of mine got certified like 2 weeks later. It was rather nice.

  10. Somewhere I read or heard that Gatorade already has one flavor that was approved as kosher even without the hechsher. I may be mistaken.

  11. as i first reported at chowhound.com after rosh hashanna, tootsie rolls will be kosher under the OU. So will gatorade. my source said the only tootsie roll products will be kosher will be tootsie rolls themselves. perhaps the other items will become kosher soon. the bazooka item referred to will probably by the ring pops

  12. Who needs it?, It’s cholov stam anyhow. We have enough “kosher” junk food already. I call it “kosher” because it is not kosher to eat things that are not good for you.

  13. do you honestly think that todays society needs more sugar to give to our children? Its not pushit how much sugar we consume every day and now we need more kosher sugary possibilities?! It will be a sad day when gatorade comes out and the children’s obesety rate will go up. have a good day and i hope none of your children die of obesity.
