Questions Concerning the Sale of Chametz by AM:PM Stores

Monday, April 28th, 2008

ampm2.jpgEldad Mizrachi, the head of the Tel Aviv Religious Council, sent a letter to Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger after receiving complaints that branches of the controversial AM:PM convenience store chain were selling chametz on Pesach, adding he has seen computerized sales receipts itemizing the items prohibited for sale that were indeed sold over Yomtov.

Rav Tzurial, who signed off as the rabbinical representative of the stores regarding the sale of chametz, will appear before Rav Metzger, who summoned him to explain.

It remains unclear at present why the rabbi appears to be deemed responsible for the sale of chametz when his role was only in that of a messenger towards the sale of chametz.

Heavy Fighting in Beit Hanoun – Rockets Slam into Sderot Home

Monday, April 28th, 2008

IDF Givati infantry soldiers entered the Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza on Monday as efforts to halt rocket attacks into southern Israel continue.

Two soldiers were injured in the fighting on Monday morning, with one listed in moderate condition.

PA sources report seven dead, a mother and her five children, reporting an IDF tank shell slammed into her home. Using the fighting to legitimize the launch of a number of rockets into southern Israel, terrorists on Monday morning fired at least 14 rockets into Israel, with one striking a home, resulting in significant property damage. Another landed near a school. An unspecified number of people were treated for hysteria following the attacks.

Magen David Adom officials have moved to a level III alert status in the area, expecting an increase in rocket attacks as a result of the fighting in Beit Hanoun.

Amidror: We Must Re-conquer Gaza to Halt Escalating Terror

Monday, April 28th, 2008

idf tank1.jpgMajor-General (reserves) Yaakov Amidror, a former head of the IDF Research & Assessment Division of Army Intelligence on Monday morning told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) that in order to bring a halt to the escalating terrorism from Gaza, Israel must launch a major offensive with the realization the IDF will have to maintain a presence in Gaza for “many years” to come.

Amidror made reference to Operation Chomat Magen (Defensive Shield), which was implemented after Pesach 2002, six years ago, which led to Israel retaking control of Yehuda and Shomron.

Drawing a direct analogy to the current situation in Gaza, Amidror explained the harsh pictures such as the ones coming from Gaza this morning of the dead children and a civilian women are indeed painful, and cause for sorrow, but this cannot deter us from a justified mission, the right to protect our citizens and our responsibility to halt the escalating Hamas terror.

The former senior intelligence officer added that such pictures are no longer coming out of Yehuda and Shomron, because Israel maintains control, stating with a modicum of confidence the same will be true in Gaza following a short-term military offensive, that admittedly will carry a price in lives of IDF personnel, but Amidror stated before Chomat Magen, the death toll in one month due to terror hit triple digits, now averaging six monthly, a major decline which is maintained. Amidror did warn that a military incursion without a commitment to remain in Gaza for a number of years will not bring about the desired results. The goal he explained cannot be achieved without a long-term IDF presence.

Amidror is calling on the government to take the initiative, explaining that if not now, the government will be compelled to order the IDF into Gaza in the future since the continued deterioration of the situation in the south is unacceptable and intolerable at present, and will only continue to decline.

He explained that today, the air force and tanks are required, leading to situations such as today, with the PA exhibiting photos of dead children, since once in control, as is the case in Shechem where 20 soldiers enter the area and apprehend or eliminate terrorists, without a need to fight from afar, without using the air force or tanks, eliminating the collateral damage.

Amidror stated that the loss of civilian life is painful, but quickly added today’s events must be examined since it is extremely rare for a tank shell to claim five lives, stressing that while it is indeed possible, it remains most unlikely.

ADL Says Libyan U.N. Representative’s Remarks Equating Israel With Nazi Germany ‘Deeply Insulting’

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

adl1.jpgThe Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called “deeply insulting” remarks by a Libyan representative to the U.N. Security Council, in which he compared Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza to the systematic killing of six million Jews in the Holocaust.

The remarks by Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, came during an April 23 discussion in the Security Council of the situation for Palestinians living in Gaza and prompted five Western envoys to walk out of the session in protest.

“There can be no comparison between Israel’s effort to defend its citizens against terrorism and the Nazis’ systematic killing of six million Jews in the Holocaust,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  “Any attempt to equate the two is odious, patently false and deeply insulting to the memory of the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust, to the survivors and their families and to the entire Jewish community.”

In a letter to U.N. Security Council President Dumisani S. Kumalo, the League called for an official statement condemning the Libyan representative for using the forum of the Security Council “as a platform for anti-Semitism.”

“The statement by the Libyan representative brings shame to the Security Council,” said the letter to Mr. Kumalo.  “The apparent silence of the Presidency and other members of the Council create a perception of agreement with the views expressed by the Libyan representative.”

ADL commended the representatives from Belgium, Britain, Costa Rica, France, and the United States who reportedly walked out of the session in protest of the deputy ambassador’s remarks.

Abu Mazen Leaves Washington Empty Handed

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) left Washington following a meeting with US President George W. Bush empty handed, with the American leader rejecting his demand for a total Israeli withdrawal to the pre-June 1967 boundaries, the division of Jerusalem and the right of so-called Palestinian refugees to return to Israel.

The PA leader signaled that Yasser Arafat during the 2002 Camp David II talks with then Prime Minister Ehud Barak rejected a more liberal deal than Israel is currently offering and he is unwilling to accept anything less than Arafat.

Abbas: Lull in Fighting a Tactic in Struggle

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) told the Al-Jazeera Arab satellite news agency that the proposed lull in fighting in Gaza is a “tactic in the ongoing struggle against Israel”.

The PA Fatah leader added that if Israel rejects the offer, there will be a sharp escalation in warfare in Gaza.

Should the Egyptian initiative be accepted by Israel, it would not have any direct bearing on Israeli operations in Yehuda and Shomron he added. He told AP that he is disappointed however that talks with Israel have hit a dead end.

He stated that in talks with US President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, there were no breakthroughs to report following his negotiating efforts.

Netanyahu Attacks Olmert Regarding Turkish Mediation With Syria

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Opposition leader MK Binyamin Netanyahu had harsh remarks for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in light of recent and growing media reports that the prime minister is willing to cede the entire Golan Heights.

Netanyahu state he is giving everything away even before peace talks are launched.

Ceding the Golan to Syria he stated would bring Iran closer to Israel, a move that is contrary to regional peace efforts, the opposition leader added during a Maimouna festival visit to Nesher on Sunday.

The opposition leader was referring to weekend third-party mediation efforts by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

Tank Corps Commander Says he is the Scapegoat

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

9th Armored Corps Battalion Commander Lt.-Colonel Yair Baranes released statements that he is being made the fall guy following the investigation into the Nahal Oz fuel depot terror attack (reported HERE on YWN).

Baranes maintains the investigation stopped after investigators evaluated his actions in the events surrounding the attack that left two civilian employees of the depot dead.

Shortly after being informed of the decision of IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi to remove him from his command post, he was called to hospital as his wife gave birth to a daughter, the couple’s first child.

Speaking with friends, the commander stated he is unable to digest the decision to dismiss him when it is clear the investigation has yet to be completed.

Baranes enlisted in the IDF 14 years ago and moved up the ranks of the Tank Corps. He assumed his current command following the Second Lebanon War.

He has spent the last days with his wife and their new child, pained over what he feels is an unfair decision, stating, “After 14 years, you suddenly find yourself at fault. Over the years, there were many successes, none of which were publicized. Not even one. For two minutes I failed and suddenly, all is forgotten. This is not a fair or logical approach.”

Shas Leader Signaling Coalition Crisis Over Monthly Allowance Payments

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Shas Party leader Minister Eli Yishai on Thursday announced the government must increase the monthly child allowance payment or face a coalition crisis.

A statement released by the Shas Party stated that the issue of negotiations on the future of Yerushalayim and other matters are being monitored and discussed but the issue of the monthly payments to families is a non-starter, and failure to increase the payments by NIS several hundred monthly will indeed result in a coalition crisis.

Yishai signaled the move must be immediate, realizing after Pesach, the price of such essentials as bread and electricity are going up, a reality that will place an increased strain on large middle class and lower income families.

Yishai added that the matter of the monthly child allowance payments is a directive which comes from the party’s spiritual leader, Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, and it is not subject to negotiations.

Yishai’s Colleagues Beg to Differ

Members of the Knesset’s Shas Party faction told reporters on Friday morning they are not in agreement with party leader Eli Yishai, who on Thursday announced if the government is not immediately forthcoming with an increase in monthly child allowance payments, the result will be a coalition crisis.

In a strange sequence of events, colleagues of Yishai stated the issue of the monthly child allowance is indeed one of paramount importance but party spiritual leader HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita has not instructed Shas to break away from the coalition over it as Yishai is indicating.

More Marches Planned In Protest Of Bell Verdict

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

cops.jpgCBS2 Reports: Outrage over the Sean Bell verdict is spreading across the country. Sunday afternoon, leaders of the major civil rights organizations came to New York to say that they are prepared to ask thousands of their members to visit the city to tie it up in acts of civil disobedience.

At a National Action Network rally in Harlem Sunday, Charles Steele Jr., President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) told the packed house, “You still have to hit the streets! Still have to raise hell and go to jail!”

According to Steele, the Sean Bell Verdict means people will have to be arrested in the thousands when the call goes out for volunteers to commit acts of civil disobedience. The call is expected within weeks.

Judging by the support coming in from major organizations around the country — the NAACP, The Urban League — it seems many people are willing to tie up the streets of New York, if necessary.

Among them is Sean Bell’s father, William Bell, who spoke exclusively with CBS 2 News Sunday. He said he is prepared to be arrested.

“He’s gotta get justice,” said Bell. “I meant that.”

On Monday, Congressman John Conyers, who heads the Congressional Oversight Committee for the Justice Department, will come to Queens from Washington D.C. and walk the area from Club Kalua to where Sean Bell was shot – in anticipation of recommending the three officers be tried in federal court.

“It’s really sad nothing [has been] done about it,” added William Bell.

Civil rights advocates want sweeping reforms in the handling of police misconduct and brutality cases in the wake of the acquittal of three officers involved in the fatal shooting of Sean Bell. Two of Bell’s friends were wounded in a volley of 50 shots fired by the undercover officers and two colleagues; the officers said they thought they were in mortal danger, but no gun was found in Bell’s car.

As with previous fatal shooting incidents in which police were absolved of criminal responsibility, the case and the verdict have triggered widespread dismay and calls for protests. New York Gov. David Paterson is expected to support a proposal for a permanent state-level special prosecutor to investigate such incidents.

Meanwhile, The Reverend Al Sharpton led a rally in Harlem on Saturday amid calls for justice and protest in response to the acquittals of the three NYPD detectives who shot and killed Sean Bell. He promised several rallies in the coming days and to quote shut the city down.

People signed up to take part in upcoming acts of peaceful civil disobedience, possibly during rush hour for maximum impact.

“Shut it down, shut it down. Shut it down, shut it down,” demonstrators chanted. They held up white placards numbered one through fifty for the number of shots the officers fired.

Accusations of Blame Following Fatal Attack

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Officials in charge of the Nitzanei Shalom Industrial Park blame the IDF for failing to provide adequate security following Friday’s fatal terror attack that left two Jews dead. They point to empty guard posts as the reason a lone terrorist was able to fire at the two, at point blank range, and then flee the scene.

Military officials reject the allegations, explaining there are security protocols and the military did not in any way fall short of its responsibilities towards the industrial park.

An investigation into the fatal attack revealed that both the victims, Eli Wasserman and Shimon Mizrachi, did perform standard security checks on the many Arab employees in their respective factories. As they closed the door behind them and began heading to their factory buildings, they heard a knock on the door. They opened the door, permitting the terrorist who was waiting on the side to open fire at them, both mortally wounded as a result.

A third security person, Avner Cohen, 60, who was armed, crawled away, escaping without physical injuries. He told reporters that “it is better to alive than a dead hero”.

Wasserman and Mizrachi were not wearing flack jackets during the security inspections. It was also learned that Mizrachi was unarmed, having left his weapon in his vehicle.

While the army rejected outright criticism that it abandoned the factory workers, immediately following he attack, the abandon positions were again manned by military personnel.

Yehuda & Shomron Division Commander Brigadier-General Noam Tivon stated in such a scenario, the security personnel are expected to fire back at the attacker. He added operating protocol demands three security personnel at the inspection gate, adding the investigation will explain perhaps how it is that among three armed security agents, no one managed to fire a single shot at the attacker.

Barak Cancels Washington Visit

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Defense Minister Ehud Barak last week canceled a trip to Washington, scheduled to leave for America on Sunday morning. The defense minister was expecting to meet with senior officials to discuss a number of matters, as well as planning to close the deal on an aide package surrounding Israel’s 60th independence anniversary.

It appears the disclosure of the arrest of accused elderly former spy Ben-Ami Kadish resulted in a negative atmosphere, prompting Barak aides to advise against such a trip at this time.

An official statement released by Defense Ministry officials’ states the defense minister is remaining in Israel to monitor developments in Gaza as well as other security considerations.
