NJ Senate Passes Bill Allowing Religious Accommodations for Election Schedules

Monday, November 24th, 2008

agudnj.jpgAgudath Israel of New Jersey salutes the passage of bill S-2199 in the New Jersey Senate today. This bill, recently passed in the Assembly, will enable the State to reschedule an election or referendum if it falls out on a major religious holiday.

The bill was authored by Assemblyman Gary Schaer of Passaic (D-36) coming on the heels of the Jewish community’s outspoken objection to the City of Edison’s school bond referendum vote planned for Rosh Hashana. Although the school board eventually rescheduled the election for December 9th, the entire Jewish community called for further action on the state level – resulting in the creation of S-2199 and its Assembly companion.  Senator Barbara Buono of Edison (D-18) and her Assembly colleagues, Peter Barnes and Patrick Diegnan, were also instrumental in the sponsorship and passing of this bill. Our gratitude also goes to Senator Sean Kean of West Long Branch (R-11) who signed onto the bill after the town of West Long Branch also scheduled and held school board elections on Rosh Hashana.

Agudath Israel thanks Assemblyman Schaer for once again protecting the religious rights of the citizens of the State of New Jersey. Agudath Israel of New Jersey, who played a key role in the postponement of the elections in Edison and passage of this bill, applauds this legislative victory and praises the State Legislature and Governor Corzine for their continuing concern for the interests of the Jewish community.

Critical Shortage of Physicians in IDF Continues

Monday, November 24th, 2008

idf cho.jpgIDF Chief Medical Officer Brigadier-General Nachman Ash is truly concerned over the critical shortage of physicians in the military, well-aware of the fact that the condition will take years to rectify. In a new record-breaker, in three combat battalions, there is no physician, and paramedics are doing their best to fill the void.

The army’s efforts to enlist students into its ‘Atuda’ study/service program to become physicians has yielded limited success and it does not come close to showing promise of eliminating the shortage of doctors.

IDF officials explain that while interest in the Atuda program is considerable, the medical schools in the country have raised the bar and admission to military personnel is not guaranteed. YWN recently reported (HERE) that Ash has called on medical schools to accommodate military students but they are unwilling to create a double standard, compelling Ash towards promoting an IDF medical school.

At present, the bottom line is substandard medical care for combatants. There must be a minimum of one physician per combat battalion but currently, this is not the case. Experience shows that battalions with physicians and not paramedics have a lower dropout rate.

Sadly, IDF efforts to attract medical school candidates only yielded two responses, despite an attractive NIS 50,000 sign-on bonus, a vehicle and the IDF commitment to cover the cost of a resident specializing in a specific field.

Weiss Promises Staunch Resistance at Bet HaShalom

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Prominent Greater Land of Israel activist and long-time Yesha Council official Daniela Weiss on Monday morning told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) that she and the growing number of supporters of Bet HaShalom have no intentions of walking away from the legally acquired property.

She added that support is growing and as a result, she remains confident at the end, the government will not order a forced eviction, realizing the numbers are overwhelming.

When asked to explain, based on the post-Gush Katif realities, she stated that if a force is sent to remove them, the “strength” (Otzma was the word she used) exhibited will be “Amona plus, plus, plus, plus”, seeking to give a qualitative air to the staunch opposition that will be exerted towards defending the home and prevent the removal of Jews. She elaborated by warning “Amona will be dwarfed by the resistance that will be seen at Bet HaShalom”.

In the meantime, right-wing marchers from around the country are heading towards Chevron in preparation for a standoff against Israel Police and other security forces.

Channel 10: Rav Ovadia Shlita Asks Deri to Wait to Make a Return

Monday, November 24th, 2008

According to a Channel 10 News report, Chacham Ovadia Yosef Shlita has requested from Rav Aryeh Deri, the party’s former leader, to hold off on announcing any return to the political arena at present.

It appears that Deri planned to announce his entry to the new party launched by his brother Shlomo, as was reported HERE by YWN, but Rav Ovadia called on him to hold off, fearing such a move would rob Shas of votes in the upcoming election for the 18th Knesset.

The report concludes the Rav promised Deri a senior place back in Shas after his moral turpitude clause expires, permitting his return to a political post.

VIDEO & PHOTOS: International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries

Monday, November 24th, 2008

c.jpg(YWN VIDEO & PHOTO LINKS AT END OF ARTICLE) Over four thousand Chabad Lubavitch emissaries (Shluchim) and lay leaders from 73 countries converged on Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, this weekend for the 25th annual “International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries.”

The high point of the conference was on Sunday night, when emissaries joined with supporters and lay leaders for a gala banquet at Manhattan’s Pier 94. The banquet’s proceedings included a special address by former Israeli ambassador Yehuda Avner. In addition, Jewish Educational Media unveiled an original video production that highlights the interconnectedness of Jewish communities around the globe.

The highlight of the evening was the annual “Roll Call” reading of countries and states across the globe where there is a Shliach located. It is read by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, Director and MC of the Kinus Hashluchim Banquet.

This writer was emotionally moved upon hearing the list being read, and when thousands of people spontaneously jumped up and began dancing upon the completion of the Roll Call.

YWN has captured the highlight of the evening on video for our readers:

‘Yordim’ Looking to Come Home [With Empty Pockets]

Monday, November 24th, 2008

elal1.jpgIsraeli diplomatic officials in N. America are pointing to an increase in the number of ‘yordim’, Israelis who left the country to relocate to N. America are requesting funding for an airplane ticket home. They point out that they are referring to cases in an Israeli hopeful was seeking his/her fortune abroad lost all his/her money.

Israel’s Consul General in Miami, Eli Yifrach, reports that numbers are small, but a day does not pass without a new inquiry, representing a significant increase. “There are cases in which the Israeli explained they are being evicted from their homes, unable to make mortgage payments. They were on the verge of starvation,” Yifrach elaborated in his correspondence to Foreign Ministry officials.

Another N. American diplomatic official concurs, stating in one case, he gave an Israeli $100, realizing he no longer had money to eat. “I know they often turn to Chabad houses for food and assistance,” he adds.

Sharon Glazeman, a senior Absorption Ministry official, confirms there are a “number of cases known to us in which Israelis no longer have funds to purchase a plane ticket.”

Erez Chalfon, the ministry’s director-general, has ordered looking into the legal aspect of establishing some type of fund in tandem with the Foreign Ministry to assist the stranded Israelis to purchase plane tickets home.

Changing Of The Guard at Agudath Israel Keynote Session

Monday, November 24th, 2008

agudah114.jpgA historic transition is planned for this coming Motzoei Shabbos, at Agudath Israel of America’s 86th national convention.  The mantle of the organization’s lay leadership will then pass from one rightly celebrated and accomplished askan to another.  It will be passing as well from dear friend to dear friend and from one confidant of Gedolei Yisroel to another.

Rabbi Shmuel Bloom, Agudath Israel’s executive vice president for the past decade – and faithful Agudah worker and executive for many decades prior – will be retiring from that post in January, and Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel will be assuming it.

bloom1.jpgRabbi Bloom, who has served Agudath Israel in one or another capacity since 1975, worked side-by-side with the legendary president of Agudath Israel, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, z”l, for nearly a quarter-century, and served as Rabbi Sherer’s “right hand man” in running the organization.  Upon Rabbi Sherer’s petirah, Rabbi Bloom assumed the top executive position in the organization.

Rabbi Bloom was personally responsible for the development and administration of employment programs like Project COPE and COPE Institute; for relief projects like the Iranian Rescue Committee, Vaad L’Hatzolas Nidchei Yisroel, Operation Open Curtain, and the Overseas AID Consortium; and youth projects like Project YES (Youth Enrichment Services).

Most recently, in his role as Vice Chairman of Agudath Israel World Organization, Rabbi Bloom created Betzedek – the American Israel Center of Advancement of Justice in Israel – and Temech, a program designed to increase employment in the chareidi World in Eretz Yisroel.

Rabbi Bloom has earned the confidence of Gedolim both in America and overseas, and is expected to continue to serve Agudas Yisroel and Klal Yisroel in other roles in the future.  He is a maggid shiur of Daf Yomi in his shul, Agudath Israel of Long Island, and hopes to devote more time during his retirement to limud Torah and harbotzas Torah.

zwiebel.jpgRabbi Zwiebel, too, is highly regarded by rabbonim and roshei yeshiva, and by all who have had the honor to interact with him.  He joined Agudath Israel of America in 1984 after a career in private practice with one of the nation’s most prestigious law firms, and currently serves as the organization’s executive vice president for government and public affairs.

As a lawyer, Rabbi Zwiebel’s areas of professional experience include religious freedom, church-state relations, civil rights, private education and medical ethics.  He has authored numerous amicus curiae briefs in a variety of judicial settings, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and has testified before various legislative and administrative bodies, including committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives; and published widely in the fields of religion, law and public policy.

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the prestigious National Commission on Children; and in 2005, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed him to serve as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s conference in Cordoba, Spain on anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance.

Above all, though, Rabbi Zwiebel is a champion of the concept of k’vod chachomim and respect for Daas Torah, and those ideals are what guide him in all his activities, both within and outside the Orthodox Jewish community.

As a result of the organizational “changing of the guard,” the convention’s Motzoei Shabbos Keynote Session – like all convention sessions, open to the public free of charge – promises to be a particularly moving and enthusiastic gathering.  Rabbi Bloom will address the crowd, reflecting on his tenure and sharing his thoughts and hopes for the future of Agudath Israel; and Rabbi Zwiebel will present his inaugural address, paying tribute to his predecessor and laying out his vision for the organization.

The Motzoei Shabbos Keynote Session will be infused as well with words of Torah, hisorerus and hadrocho.  The Boyaner Rebbe, the convention’s special guest from Eretz Yisroel, will address the gathering. Greetings from the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah will be extended by Rabbi Avrohom Chaim Levin, Rosh HaYeshiva, Telshe Yeshiva, Chicago.  And an address will be delivered by the Rosh Agudas Yisroel: Rabbi Yaakov Perlow, the Novominsker Rebbe.  The session will also include a Siyum Mishnayos l’zeicher nishmas Rabbi Boruch Borchardt z”l, Agudas Yisroel’s indefatigable executive director for over fifty years, whose activities on behalf of Agudath Israel over those decades were many and are legend.

VIDEO: President Bush Warns More Bailouts May Be Coming

Monday, November 24th, 2008

bush ob1.jpg(VIDEO LINK AT END OF ARTICLE) President Bush appeared outside the Treasury Department on Monday morning with Secretary Hank Paulson to show they are still at the tiller.

Bush warned there could be more bailouts to come, and said that on his flight back from an international economic summit in Peru on Sunday, he had talked with Paulson about “the decisions made to safeguard” Citigroup Inc.

Here are the president’s full remarks:

Mr. Secretary, thank you very much for inviting me in for a cup of coffee. The Secretary and I share the concerns of our citizens, concerns about jobs, concerns about their savings accounts. This is a tough situation for America. But we’ll recover from it. And the first step to recovery is to safeguard our financial system.

Last night on Air Force One coming back from Peru, I talked at length to the Secretary about his recommendation. The decision was made to safeguard Citigroup. We have made these kind of decisions in the past — made one last night. And if need be, we’re going to make these kind of decisions to safeguard our financial system in the future.

I talked to President-elect Obama about the decision we made. I told the American people, and I told the President-elect when I first met him, that anytime we were to make a big decision during this transition, he will be informed, as will his team.

Secretary Paulson is working closely with the President-elect’s transition team. It’s important for the American people to know that there is close cooperation. It’s important for the American people to know that we will safeguard the financial system as the first step necessary for financial — or for economic recovery. And so, Mr. Secretary, thanks for your hard work. Appreciate it.

Thank you.

Israel: Less Poverty in 2007

Monday, November 24th, 2008

On Sunday, Bituach Leumi released its semi-annual poverty report signaling a decline in national poverty as compared to 2006. However, Bituach Leumi officials’ state in an authoritative tone that if the global economic crisis continues at its current pace, next year’s poverty report will include new harsh realities.

Nachum Itzkowitz, the director-general of the government’s Social Affairs Office, explains that not only will unemployment reach or exceed 8%, there will be an increase in crime, an increase in the breakdown of the family structure, and even an increase in the mortality rate. He reports the experts predict an 7% increase in homicides, 4% increase in arrests, and an even more alarming 40% increase in the number of children and juveniles classified ‘at risk’.

Itzkowitz also reports a predicted increase of up to 8% in divorce, a 6% increase in deaths due to heart attack, and a 4% increase in suicides. He said if the doomsday prophecy proves itself true, it will have a disastrous impact on social services, which already is responsibly for dealing with 1.2 million cases.

On the brighter side if you will, the Bituach Leumi report released on Sunday shows the number of families living below the poverty line to be 19.9%, a decline from 20% in 2006. Regarding the number of individuals living under the poverty line in 2007, the report shows that number to be 23.8% as compared to 24.5% in 2006.

For the first time in a decade there was a decline in the number of children living in poverty, 34.2% in 2007 as compared to 35.8% in 2006.  The good news however does not carry over to the senior citizens, climbing over 1% to 22.6%.

The report also proves [once again] that poverty is not caused by “laziness”, citing that among the nation’s poor families, 46% are working families. Actually, in 60% of the families classified as ‘poor’, someone in the family is employed in some capacity.

Despite the statisticians’ optimism exhibited in the report, Labor & Social Affairs Minister Yitzchak Herzog stated painfully that all projections for 2009 are bleak at best. “I do not wish to instill panic” stated the minister, “but we must prepare and face the hard facts”.

Bituach Leumi officials report they are aware of the bleak realities and projections for the coming year and have relaxed qualifications for one to obtain unemployment benefits towards preparing for an expected wave of unemployment.

Ministers Continue Instigating Public Against Chevron Residents

Monday, November 24th, 2008

mh1.jpgThe “quiet before the storm” perhaps describes the atmosphere in Chevron, Ir HaAvos today, as residents remain on guard, realizing security forces may make an appearance at any moment to execute the government’s decision to expel residents of Bet HaShalom, “The House of Conflict” as it is referred to in the mainstream media, another mild but effective method of de-legitimizing the legally purchased structure.

Despite the hard evidence, including a video showing the previous owner counting the money which he received, the Supreme Court of the State of Israel appears interested in advancing the government’s agenda, not true justice. Aware that it cannot turn its back on physical evidence and legal documentation, the court has totally ignored addressing the ownership issue, and has ordered the “settlers” out in a ‘noble decision’ which the court feels exhibits an air of fair play, instructing the state of remain overseer of the property until the dispute can be resolved.

In actuality, there is no dispute. The papers exist and the transaction was made. The dispute is a man-made one, that that may chas v’sholom lead to violence as security forces will be ordered into the Holy City to oust the Jews, another Amona, another Gush Katif, another N. Shomron, another Yamit. Once again, the government is providing the enemy with the knowledge that if he makes enough noise, he may use our own system against us, enabling him to claim a victory without firing a shot. This despite the repeated statements that over recent years our deterrence abilities have dropped – apparently not only on the battlefield, but in our own courtrooms.

One should take notice that among the opponents of Bet Shalom, and there are many, there are also some 50 MKs who signed a petition supporting the legal acquisition of the residents and Chevron Jewish community. Prominent personalities have expressed their support but perhaps what is painfully absent is a major showing of support from premier hopeful Binyamin Netanyahu, who possibly prefers not to become too involved as he works in earnest to portray himself as a centrist moderate, no longer to be identified with the inciters of the pre-Rabin assassination.

It should be remembered that while the documents were signed by [now President] Shimon Peres, Netanyahu, in his capacity as prime minister handed the Holy City over to the PA. He now surrounds himself with right-wing all-stars such a Moshe Ya’alon and Binyamin Begin, and he may even be the ‘most right-wing’ of the current options, but it appears he remains Bibi Netanyahu, with the gift of gab but painfully lacking in principles and ideology.

It is the same opposition leader who today refers to Moshe Feiglin as “an extremist”, working diligently to prevent him from entering Knesset under the Likud banner. It is the same Netanyahu who has yet to permit Effie Eitam to enter the Likud race, a retired IDF brigadier-general, a political hawk, a man who gave up much of his military career due to his insistence on displaying his yarmulke and his belief of a Greater Land of Israel, the foundation on which Netanyahu’s Likud was founded.

In Chevron, leaders of the community are working to calm the atmosphere. They are also seasoned in dealing with the realities of the sacrifice that has been demanded to maintain the minimum Jewish presence in the city. Since the renewed Jewish settlement in the city over 40 years ago, it has been an uphill battle and every government, right-wing and left-wing, has blocked efforts towards any major Jewish settlement of the Ir HaAvos. They are also aware that the day will come and the troops will come in and once again, it will be Jew against Jew and in such a scenario, no one wins.

Abbas Appointed the President of Palestine

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) has declared PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) is the president of Palestine, officially filling the void left by the late arch terrorist and PA leader, Yasser Arafat.

Undoubtedly the move will serve to further tensions between Fatah and Hamas as each of the terror organizations vie for control of what they hope will one day become a PA state.

Arafat actually declared the State of Palestine in 1989.

Rice Does Not Miss an Opportunity to Blame Israel

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Outgoing US Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice perhaps cannot miss an opportunity to pressure or attack Israel. Her latest statement was made to journalists accompanying her on her airplane, when she blamed Israel’s internal political turmoil for the inability to reach an agreement with the PA (Palestinian Authority) by year’s end as President Bush had hoped.

Interestingly, she does not see any political turmoil in the divided PA, with Hamas running affairs in Gaza and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) trying to hang on in Yehuda and Shomron. His term ends in January, at which time Hamas insists he must hold elections or they will no longer recognize his authority.

Rice tried her best to pressure Israel into giving away the country, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appeared quite willing to accommodate her but it appears HaKadosh Baruch Hu had other plans.
