Iron Dome Anti Rocket System Tests Successful

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Optimism surrounds predictions that the Iron Dome (Kippat Barzel) rocket detection system will be ready to go operational in 2010.

A number of tests of the system intended to provide protection for southern area residents were conducted this week, with defense officials reporting the results were encouraging. It was added that the tests actually resembled real attacks, using some of the same rockets deployed by terrorists in northern Gaza.

On the down side, the continued development of the system sends a message that rocket attacks from Gaza are being accepted as part of life’s realities in southern Israel.

Petition Challenges Lieberman’s Appointment as Foreign Minister

Friday, March 27th, 2009

The Movement for Quality Government (MQG) has petitioned the High Court of Justice against the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister due to the police investigations against him.

The petition also makes mention of the fact that a member of Yisrael Beitenu will serve as minister of public security, directly responsible for Israel Police, which is problematic since Lieberman is under investigation, facing allegations of many serious white collar crimes.

Hamas Denies Sudanese Convoy was Carrying Weapons

Friday, March 27th, 2009

According to Hamas officials, the convoy in Sudan that was targeted in an IAF air strike was not carrying weapons for Gaza, but people fleeing Sudan, hoping to find work in Egypt and elsewhere.

Using its propaganda machine to feed the world media, which is more than willing to blame Israel for additional “war crimes”, Hamas announced the strike was against innocent civilians, non combatants and not weapons smugglers.

Israel has remained silent regarding American reports that the IAF carried out the January 2009 air strike, similar to the bombing in Syria in which a nuclear facility was eliminated.

What About the 1 Million Southern Residents

Friday, March 27th, 2009

kassam.jpgThe reports of Israel’s aerial strike against a Hamas weapons supply train in Sudan are making their way around the world. America has rejected Sudan’s allegations, insisting the attack was carried out by Israel, not the United States.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday came as close as Israel will to accept responsibility for the military strike, stating Israel will strike against her enemies when threatened anywhere and everywhere.

What is sad however is the fact that analysts continue to explain the Israeli decision to strike, stating the 17-truck weapons convoy was carrying longer range missiles, missiles capable of striking Tel Aviv and the Gush Dan area from Gaza. This was enough to compel the prime minister and defense minister to authorize the airport to sanction an IAF strike as far as Sudan, confirming the fact that rockets may leave 1 million Israelis in southern areas, include Ashdod, Ashkelon and Beersheva, the capital of the Negev, in a state of peril, but Tel Aviv is the red line. No one may strike out against the Tel Aviv area, home to the Israeli Ashkenazi elite, the leaders of the nation.

The air strike against Hamas in Sudan was commendable, but it is unfortunate and perhaps worse regarding the fact the Government of Israel is willing to permit ongoing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians in the southern areas.

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Moses pointed out the trend repeats itself annually, questioning if the ministry has taken any steps to prevent he unacceptable practice. Moses spoke of a possible cartel, demanding the ministry investigate and take the appropriate action.

He explained he is prompted by the growing number of complaints he has received from alarmed consumers, who have a difficult enough time making Pesach and paying the regular prices, yet alone the exorbitant increase.

Moses added he plans to take his case to the Industry & Trade Ministry and the Israel Consumer Council as well.

Maryland Prisons Serving Kosher Meals During Pesach

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

jail3.jpgA Maryland prison spokesman says state prisons will offer kosher meals for inmates who are observant Jews during Pesach.

Maryland Department of Correction spokesman Rick Binetti wouldn’t discuss the new policy, beyond saying the department would allow inmates to keep kosher for the coming Yom Tov.

The department is facing two lawsuits over kosher meals. One was argued in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Wednesday.

A former Allegany County Detention Center inmate is suing that facility over kosher meals and other observances. The trial in that case has been postponed until November.

Silver Spring Orthodox Rabbi Herzel Kranz said about 140 Jews are Maryland inmates. He said every Jew relates to Pesach and wants to eat matzoh.

Haaretz Continues to Condemn Shmiras Mitzvos in the IDF

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Taking a break from its regular articles condemning the IDF Chief Rabbinate, accusing it of “brainwashing” members of the military and exceeding its authority by infringing on the role of the IDF Education Branch, the daily Haaretz has now turned the focus of its attacks on frum soldiers.

The Haaretz report cites that about 100 soldiers and officers left official military ceremonies to avoid hearing women sing, outraged at the insubordination of the shomer Shabbat soldiers who dare to act on their own will and turn their backs on official military events. The most recent case, which prompted the report, was a recent ceremony in Haifa in which a paratroop brigade marked its participation in Operation Cast Lead.

The newspaper warns of the growing number of the dati leumi and hesder soldiers and even officers, stating the current situation of leaving an official ceremony is intolerable and soldiers may not be permitted to decide to act on their own to prevent hearing women sing. The major ‘problem’ drew comment from the military’s chief education officer, Brigadier-General Eli Shermeister, who called the trend a “worrisome phenomenon” that “should not be accorded continued legitimacy”.

The newspaper even reports the startling news that another brigade recently canceled planned appearances by female singers as two frum battalion commanders explained if the females sing, they cannot attend. The report states the “problem” is widespread.

It should be pointed out that the frum soldiers acted respectfully, and quietly left ceremonies to avoid transgressing halacha, without shouts of protest or any act that might be interpreted as disrespectful.

There is also a growing demand from the sizable Shomer Shabbat community in the IDF, calling for ceremonies in accordance to halacha. Unfortunately, the Haaretz report is somewhat twisted and the headline which reads “soldiers leave military ceremonies to avoid women’s singing” perhaps should have read “IDF fails to adhere to halachic guidelines in official ceremonies, compelling soldiers to leave”.

Job Cuts Planned For N.Y. Times, Washington Post

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

nyt.gifWith no immediate end in sight to the advertising slump imperiling most newspapers, New York Times Co. (NYT) said Thursday it will cut pay for editors and managers by 5% through the end of the year and will ask the same of its unionized newsroom employees later Thursday.

The 5% cut applies to employees at all units of the New York Times Media Group with the exception of the International Herald Tribune, the company said. That means the pay reductions will happen at the Times, the Boston Globe, Boston.com and the company’s corporate offices in New York. The salaries of employees at the company’s About Group will be rolled back 2.5%.

“This was a very difficult decision to make,” Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and the company’s Chief Executive, Janet Robinson, said in a memo to employees. “The environment we are in is the toughest we have seen in our years in the business.”

IDF Commander Stands Behind Military’s Moral Operational Level

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

In response to allegations that IDF soldiers during Operation Cast Lead fired intentionally at a woman and children, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Gabi Ashkenazi has stated any failure to adhere to the military’s moral code will be met with immediate appropriate actions.

An investigation was ordered into the alleged “war crimes” allegations of the intentional firing at the civilians, and the military has learned the victims of this shooting are alive and well, quite well, contrary to the testimony of the soldiers of the Yitzchak Rabin pre-IDF course affiliated with Oranim Academic College. While the investigation is still ongoing, sources involved in the probe state that they are pleasantly surprised by the exemplary conduct of the soldiers involved, which is substantiated by the facts in the case.

The source was quick to add that is not to say there are no cases of violations and breaches of the moral code, and those violations will be appropriately addressed.

IDF military police is conducting its own investigation in addition to Ashkenazi’s appointed investigators, which is also still ongoing.

Addressing a military ceremony, Ashkenazi reiterated he position, that he stands behind the IDF, the “most moral army in the world,” adding any documented digression from acceptable behavior would be addressed appropriately.

U.S. Markets Wrap: S&P 500 Advances in Best Month Since 1974

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

ws13.jpgU.S. stocks rallied, extending the market’s best monthly gain since 1974, on better-than-estimated earnings at Best Buy Co. and ConAgra Foods Inc. and prospects for lower labor costs at General Motors Corp. Treasury one-month bill rates turned negative for the first time since December.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 2.3 percent to 832.86, up 13 percent in March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 174.75 points, or 2.3 percent, to a six-week high of 7,924.56. The Nasdaq Composite rallied 3.8 percent, erasing its loss for the year. Stocks extended gains as an auction of seven- year Treasuries eased concern that demand for government debt is dwindling.

Stocks added to an advance yesterday triggered by government data showing unexpected growth in durable-good orders and new-home sales. Those reports tempered reaction to Commerce Department data today that said the economy shrank last quarter at a 6.3 percent annual pace, more than previously estimated while less than the average forecast in a Bloomberg survey.

Felder Hosts NYPD Yeshiva Security Summit

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

17.jpgBrooklyn NY – Council Member Simcha Felder (D – Brooklyn) hosted an event on Wednesday evening that brought together administrators from thirty-five yeshivas and representatives of the New York Police Department to discuss ways to improve security at local yeshivas.

“Events like these foster an important ongoing dialogue between school administrators and the NYPD that is absolutely vital to ensuring our children’s safety,” said Felder.

An NYPD detective and one officer took questions and explained methods for heightening security such as improved lighting, locked gates, guards and detailed emergency plans. The NYPD also made itself available to conduct safety evaluations of individual yeshivas. Community members as well as representatives from Shomrim took part in the event.

“When the City isn’t providing non-public schools with the same security measures that they provide public schools, such as security cameras and guards, non-public schools need to be extra vigilant,” added Felder.

Councilman Felder authored legislation introduced in 2008 that would direct the Department of Education, upon the request of a non-public school, to provide children who attend these schools with the same security services made available to children attending public schools.
