Montreal: Frum Summer Camp Has Third Fire in One Month

(Monday, June 18th, 2007)

fire2.jpgA Frum camp in Montreal was the target of a third suspicious fire in almost a month (the others reported HERE on YW) on Sunday, leaving members of Montreal’s Jewish community fearing for their safety.

A private summer cottage at the Val-David, Que., camp was found burned to the ground early Sunday morning and five other properties were vandalized. No one was injured in the fire. Police say it appears there was an attempt to set at least one other home ablaze.
”We’re hoping that there will be some evidence within those residences that could lead to some arrests.”

Orthodox Jews have been using the Val-David area as a summer retreat for more than 60 years. Tensions with locals have arisen in the past, but relations with most locals are friendly. Those with homes on the retreat grounds say they’ve never experienced attacks of this magnitude in the past.
