R’ Yidel Perlstein Running to Be First Ever Chasidic Community Board Chair in New York City

Brooklyn – Borough Park resident and businessman Yidel Perlstein, a respected local community leader and devoted father and husband, is running to be the first-ever Chasidic Chairman of Community Board 12. Mr. Perlstein’s landmark race has the support of Councilman David G. Greenfield and Assemblyman Dov Hikind. Mr. Perlstein has devoted countless hours of his time and many resources from his successful businesses towards improving the community. Mr. Perlstein, along with his supporters including Greenfield and Hikind, believe now is the time to bring fresh enthusiastic leadership to Community Board 12, which votes on its Chairman next week.

“Yidel has always been a trailblazer who is devoted to the community,” said Councilman Greenfield, who recalled first meeting Mr. Perlstein in his capacity as a board member of Yeshiva Gan Yisroel. “Yidel is a true leader who turned the Yeshiva around by doubling its enrollment and boosting its funding, and has helped countless of yidden in our community with the mitzah of pidyun shvuim. I am confident that Yidel will lead Community Board 12 with the same passion and commitment he has displayed in the many causes and organizations he’s involved with.”

“As Chairman, I want to make Community Board 12 a place where every household and resident feels comfortable in turning to us with any local problems or issues they may have and be confident that it will be resolved. I hope to empower the board to ensure that every member has a strong voice and the ability to make a positive contribution. I am honored by the trust and confidence that Councilman Greenfield and Assemblyman Hikind have shown in me, and will take this role very seriously if elected on Tuesday,” said Perlstein.

It’s rare to find a resident of Borough Park who hasn’t been touched in some way by Mr. Perlstein’s generosity. He was instrumental in planning the annual Lag B’omer parade, enjoyed by thousands of children and parents. Working closely with city agencies including the NYPD and Mayor’s Office, Mr. Perlstein used management skills and vision to quadruple the attendance and fun. For decades he has dedicated hours each year passing out food packages to those in need before Passover. As a Borough Park JCC board member, he was instrumental in organizing last year’s food handout in partnership with the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, providing much-needed meals to hundreds of families throughout the community.

Mr. Perlstein’s leadership experience is exemplified in his business. He’s a proven job creator who has dramatically expanded his truck leasing company since taking it over, growing it from just three trucks and one location to 300 trucks and several new locations within the borough, in turn providing many jobs for the community. Lastly, Mr. Perlstein’s is a true family man and Borough Park native. His extended family resides in Borough Park and hails from the neighborhoods served by Community Board 12. Most importantly, he is a devoted husband and father of four children.

Community Boards were established to give residents a greater and local voice in city government. Each board is comprised of up to 50 volunteer residents and is headed by a board-elected chair. Under the Chair’s leadership, the Board meets monthly to advise elected officials and government agencies on many matters that have a significant impact on local quality of life.

The members of Community Board 12, which represents over 200,000 residents of Borough Park, Dahill, Kensington and Midwood, will vote on Mr. Perlstein nomination for Chair at the next meeting, Tuesday March 27 at Amico Senior Center, located at 5901 13th Avenue, starting at 7 p.m. Because of the important role these communities play in city government for the communities of Brooklyn, the election of Mr. Perlstein would make history as the first Chasidic leader to guide this important city body. To help support the local community, community members are encouraged to attend Tuesday’s meeting and publicly support Mr. Perlstein’s candidacy.

  1. Wow. Yidl Perlstein is an incredible askan. As a parent at Gan Yisruel I know how he turned around the Yehsiva. I am sure he will be a great Community Board chairman.

  2. It’s about time. The Chairman now is not frum and has caused a lot of controversy over the years. Thank you Yidl for stepping up to the plate. We need a FRUM guy to represent the largest FRUM community in America!

    Hatzlacha!

  3. I’m really amazed at the achdus that David Greenfield & Dov Hikind have shown over the last few days. It really is nice to see how the community leaders come together to support improvements and fight for what is right!

I always have such Achdus with Lehuda Yevin of Mews Mor Jorality.

  4. I just want to PUBLICLY thank Yidl for helping my cousin when he was arrested last year. Yidl got him tefillin, glatt kosher food and even seforim. Boruch Hashem, all the charges were dropped later but while he was in prison it was Yidl who was there for him. Thanks you Yidl!

  5. YIDEL WE LOVE YOU!
Thank you for everything you do for the community. It’s about time we had an ASKAN in the community board. Together with the hard-working Wolf Sender I am sure you will do a great job for the klal!

  6. I’m going to be at the Community Board on Tuesday night. The meeting is OPEN to the PUBLIC. On the Corner of 59th & 13th Avenue. Let’s make sure the ENTIRE frum community of Boro Park and Flatbush come out to support the first frum chairman of this community board!

  7. The current chairman has served for 20 years. He did an okay job the first 5 years, but lately he hasn’t even been trying. We can really make this important institution into a powerhouse. We all need to be there for Yidel Perlstein.

Yidel has been there for all of us. Now is the time for us to be there for him!

  8. if you know someone on the community board please ask him to vote for Yidel! We MUST get a frum guy elected to the community board. Yidel is a great askan and the fact that he is running for this unpaid position means that he really believes he can make a difference. LETS GET IT DONE!

  9. Does anyone know what the Community Board does? They’re supposed to solve all of our local problems – potholes, electric wires down, repaving etc. I can’t even ever get them on the phone! I simply stopped calling after I couldn’t get through. I hope this Yidel guy gets on and makes them answer the phone and solve our many problems!

  10. I hope YWN will let us know who on the board would have the chutzpa to oppose the first frum candidate for a frum board. PLEASE POST A LIST OF WHO VOTED FOR WHO AFTER THE ELECTION.
    Thanks!

  11. I give Greenfield credit for working with Hikind. However, I hope that Storobin will let bygones be bygones and work with Greenfield & Hikind if he wins the recount.

  12. R’ Yiddel is a great “get things done” guy.
I can’t wait to see how he turns this CB arround.
I’m sure he has a lot of support even from the non Chassidic Board Member. All of which have one goal in mind… “change”

  13. Thank you, Shimanowitz. That’s the point. We can make the board a powerhouse for the community if Yidel is elected the Chairman.

    VOTE YIDEL PERLSTEIN!

  14. Anyone that can turn around a yeshiva and help it have a surplus should have all of our support, I do not know too many askanim that can do that!

  15. Can anyone explain what the community board is supposed to do?
As far as I know their primary goal is granting zoning variances. By having frum control of the board we can start seeing one huge monstrosity after another being built in Boro Park by Yiddi’s “friends”.

  16. I can’t really comment about this guy, as i’m not from his community and don’t know him either. But as i understand from other comments, this guy is helpful and vital to the jewish community. It is important that someone uses his abilities for kedusha and to be mekadesh shem shomayim, which is clearly what he is doing. I wish him best hatzlocha

  17. WOW!!! What a guy Yidel is hes the best guy I ever met would do anything for anyone im sure hes going to Win Yidel is the MAN!!!!!!

  18. Though Mr. Dubrow has been a somewhat ineffective chairperson for the last several years, he has served his community (without pay) for a very long time. From what I have read, Mr. Perlstein is more than capable of doing a good job, however, I do not like the way the community board is being ambushed into making this decision so swiftly without either candidates speaking publicly as to why they want the position and what they intend to do with it should they win.
It makes me very uncomfortable to read comments such as:

“It’s about time. The Chairman now is not frum and has caused a lot of controversy over the years. Thank you Yidl for stepping up to the plate. We need a FRUM guy to represent the largest FRUM community in America!”

“I hope YWN will let us know who on the board would have the chutzpa to oppose the first frum candidate for a frum board. PLEASE POST A LIST OF WHO VOTED FOR WHO AFTER THE ELECTION.

These comments (and others) have completely disregarded the rest of the very diverse cb 12 district. This has been an issue for a very long time. Why is their only one candidate running against Mr. Dubrow? If in fact this is a “community” board, why are Dov Hilkind and David Greenfield both weighing in on who should be our chairman? As POLITICIANS, this is not their domain.
As a long time resident of this district,I hope the future of our board is one that represents the entire community, male and female, frum and non-frum in a more open, transparent and inclusive manner.
