NYC Mayor Bloomberg Calling Kin Of Workers Who Died On Duty

(Thursday, December 26th, 2013)

bloAs Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 12 years in office come to a close, he’s been making thank-you calls to the families of city workers who died on duty.

The mayor told reporters Wednesday he’s tried, in the last few weeks, to call relatives of all 69 fallen workers, by his count. They include police officers, firefighters, sanitation workers and others.

He says the city hasn’t been able to find about 10 or 15 families.

Tatyana Timoshenko tells The New York Times she heard from the mayor a few weeks ago. Her son, Police Officer Russel Timoshenko, was shot during a July 2007 traffic stop in Brooklyn. He died of his injuries days later.

His mother says Bloomberg told her he’ll always remember what her son did for the city.
