Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Friday, 20 Tammuz decided to evacuate the families of diplomats in Turkey after violent protests next to the Israeli Embassy in Ankara and the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul.
Hundreds of protestors attacked the senior diplomatic residence in Ankara with rocks on Thursday night. Police moved in and worked to disperse the mob. In Istanbul the scene at the embassy was a similar one. Sending a Twitter message to subscribers, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the ongoing IDF operation in Gaza was “Testing the conscience of humanity”.
At one point angry protestors placed the PLO flag on the Israeli diplomatic mission.
Lieberman has given the order to bring the families of diplomats home as well as recalling non-essential personnel, preferring to minimize the number of personnel in that country.
