Hamas Leader Rejects Unilateral Fatah Faction Move to Dissolve Coalition


hamOn Tuesday, 29 Sivan, PA Chairman Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) announced he was unilaterally dissolving his unity coalition government. Hamas in Gaza on Wednesday announced it does not recognize unilateral steps, rejecting Abbas’ statements.

According to Abu Mazen, the move would occur within 24 hours. Hamas officials in Gaza explain they do not recognize such unilateral actions, which would spell another break between the rival factions. It was Hamas that ousted Fatah from Gaza when it took over in military conflict in June 2007.

Despite Hamas’ objections, PA Chairman Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) on Wednesday afternoon announced his resignation and dissolved the unity government.
