A Kashrus Victory for the Chief Rabbinate in the Supreme Court

lauThe Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel after the latter refused to give hashgacha to a meat factory that was documented packaging treif as kosher.

The meat company/slaughterhouse turned to the Supreme Court seeking a ruling to compel the Chief Rabbinate to grant the company a hechsher. Chief Rabbi HaRav Dovid Lau Shlita refused to give a hashgacha after the company was caught defrauding kosher consumers. The company in point is a slaughterhouse that was used in the past, in Paraguay.

The Chief Rabbinate explained to the High Court that the last incident was the third in a number of years in which the factory in question was apprehended defrauding kosher consumers. The court ruled the Chief Rabbinate is not compelled to give a hashgacha to the store.
