Efforts To Oust Jerusalem Chief Sephardi Rabbi, HaGaon HaRav Amar After Anti-Toeiva Remarks

Pluralistic activists in Jerusalem City Hall are working to oust the city’s Chief Sephardi Rabbi, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita from his post as the rav released harsh words against the toeiva community, calling on them to remove their kippot.

The “pluralistic bloc” in City Hall, composed of Councilpersons Yossi Chavilov and Laura Warton, sent a harshly-worded letter to the Chief Rabbis on Thursday, calling to remove Rav Amar from his post.

“We, members of the Jerusalem City Council, turn to you to take actions to remove Rabbi Shlomo Amar” the letter states, explaining “due to his remarks in which he once again attacks the toeiva community”.

The letter explains that the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Council has the authority to fire a city rav, and they feel in this case, this is what the council must do.

The letter, also sent to Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon, asks rhetorically if he views the letter as being defiant, against his chareidi coalition partners- adding, “only time will tell”.

There is no way that they called themselves “the toeiva community”. While that lifestyle might not be in line with ‘frum’ values, theres nothing wrong with printing the word gay or LGBTQ in a newspaper. It’s no aveira to read the word gay.

  2. Very sad to hear how this arrogant city council members are looking to have a great Torah scholar removed from his post for quoting a Halacha.
They should focus more on helping this people deal with their problems and not force their toeivah down are throats.

  3. Yasher keyach R. Shlaymeh, חזק ואמץ!

May Hashem protect you from the irreligious forces that want to take away your free speech.

  4. Any self respecting Rabbi would say that. This stupid stupid stupid stupid idea of ousting people because of saying things thAt offend you has gone so far out of control it’s hard to believe. What is this? Kindergarten????

  5. I as a goy have very limited knowledge of T_rah, but I am quite sure that the T_orah demands that there should be NO Toevia “EQUALITY”. I read that they (Toevia) are to be removed from the the Jewish community !1

    Am I wrong ???

    A goy,

Kudos to YWN for reflecting Torah values by *not* using the terminology promoted and favored by toeivah activists, which 1) is not neutral, but chosen with care, for its propaganda value to advance their unkosher agenda, 2) is bigeder לשון מגונה או לשון שאינו נקיה (vulgar or unclean verbiage), which generally should not be used, as Chazal teach us in different places in gemara.

When someone uses their chosen terminology, which is weighted with meaning to advance their cause, they are already losing half the battle from the outset, and playing on their homecourt of their opponents. For example, they want people to believe they are happy, so they use the word g**, and use the word community to make them look like an organized, large, warm, civilized, respectable family-like movement, and thereby to lessen opposition to them and their agenda of remaking traditional society.

YWN is rightfully following the wise consensus of gedolei Yisroel and chareidi media to avoid their terminology and thereby avoid being pulled into their mindset.

    Way to go YWN!

  7. Gerry Mullen: You are right!

The Torah has not changed, the sun still rises in the morning and goes down in the evening, and water is still wet.

Some things just do not change.

  8. Pinchus Ben Elozor Ben Aron Hacohen

He led and R Amar is leading

    Don’t matter who says what

    True leadership

  9. did he suggest that a mechaleil shabbat or a ganuff take off his kipph? the halakha does not apply only to the LGBT community; discrimination does.

  10. Efforts To Oust So by logical inference are these despicable creatures calling
    1) To oust every Sepher-Torah? which call this act To’eivo.
    2) To oust every Yom-Kippur Machzor? which contains this verse by Yom-Kippur Mincho Keri’as haTorah.

Rav Amar shlita is a great Man, speaking so correctly & so truthfully.

  11. חזק ואמץ Rabbi!
We should all stand together against these abominations.
And may God give other leaders of our generation the courage to stand up and announce קבל עם ועדה anti Toeva remarks.

  12. “Toeiva+ like the word “gay” has been spoiled for general use by special pleading. You can’t have a gay, old time anymore. Likewise, the appellation, “toeiva” in the Torah is not unique to mishkav zachar. The Torah calls many aveiros “toeiva” including dishonest business practices, yet we don’t refer to Bernie Madoff’s fraud as “toeiva” although it certainly was.
