A senior Israeli official says Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is injured and currently “in low condition to function” following the opening strikes of the war.
According to the official, Khamenei is now surrounded by members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who are effectively managing the situation around him as questions grow about his ability to lead.
Israeli intelligence agencies are continuing to assess the severity of his injuries, the official said.
Iran has not confirmed the reports regarding Khamenei’s condition.
The new supreme leader has not made a public appearance since assuming power following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei was injured during the opening strikes of Israel’s Operation Epic Fury — the same wave of attacks that reportedly killed the elder Khamenei.
Khamenei released his first written statement on Thursday since taking power, warning that Iran could open additional fronts in the conflict.
However, analysts have raised doubts about whether the statement was written by Khamenei himself, suggesting it may have been drafted by officials within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
