The Senate on Wednesday rejected a Democratic-led effort to limit President Trump’s authority to use military force against Iran, marking the seventh failed attempt since the war began in February.
• The motion failed in a 49-50 vote after GOP Sens. Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski joined most Democrats in support of advancing the measure, while Sen. John Fetterman was the lone Democrat to oppose it.
• The resolution, led by Sen. Jeff Merkley, would have required the president to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities involving Iran unless Congress formally authorized military action.
• Republicans backing the administration argued the War Powers Resolution no longer applies because hostilities ended with the April 7 ceasefire, while Democrats warned the conflict could escalate again and said Republican support for the war effort is beginning to erode.
