Using the same methodology, alt 1 produces the white smiley-face, alt 2 produces the black smiley, alt 3 produces the heart.

2) question: the ascii art (is that what its called?) is just a picture with the same “backtick-period” before it and “backtick” after it like the boxes?

That’s what it’s called, and yes, you got it.
