Hmmm – my earlier post is all-but-unreadable.

I either forgot the backticks, or the site software deleted them.

Let’s try again…

You can either force the font to fixed-width black-and-white Courier New by using backticks, or you can use other tags such as the <a> you used.

You can’t do both.

The reason the backticks didn’t take is you had a non-blank character (the “.”) before the first backtick.
