As enforced, the mask requirement provided minimal marginal protection since CDC never defined minimal mask specs (aka cloth, paper, N95 etc) and most passengers took their masks off for at least half the time while “eating” and “drinking”. Airlines still have the authority to impose their own rules including masks but few will do so for economic and passenger disruption risks.
