Is it appropriate for a Jew with a gifted talent like a good voice to go on a national TV show? Recently a young boy with a kippa on his head went on the show Americas Got Talent and sang beautifully, making it to the next round. His name is edan pinchot if you search for him online-I think it was a kiddush Hashem. What do you think?

I think it is good. Recently much of the news regarding Jews has been negativity.

I dont see how it is a kiddush Hashem but I know his family and while this doesnt necessarily contradict their lifestyle, they would never have considered showing up bareheaded. They happen to be a family of beautiful people (inside and out).

I mean, how do you define Kiddush Hashem? Is the fact that he has a good voice a Kiddush Hashem?

Wearing a kippa represnting Yiddushkeit in front of Goyim, even though he was on a goyish program.

I suppose you skip ” vehivdilonu min hatoim”.

I guess it is as offensive to you as shelo osani isha.

Davening is much shorter because you keep omitting key parts.

If he has talent and is demonstrating it and entertaining, hatzlacha to him. As long as he upholds high standards of conduct, it is a kiddush Hashem, in my opinion.

Suppose I said a religious Jew took a job of second in command of the largest empire in the world? Would people say it was bad for the Jews?

Suppose I told you a prominent religious Jewish person took a job as the chief medical doctor of a ruler in the non-Jewish world?

Suppose I said another great religous Jew conferred with secular, non-Jewish scholars on the linguistics of the French language AND incorporated that language into his limudei kodesh works.

And on and on…. Of course there is the “recommended” path, but sometimes, if one is careful, and they walk the path less walked, we should not be so quick to run out with pitchforks and torches.

We are Jews and we are supposed to keeping to ourselves and not sticking ourselves into the face of the Goyim. Nothing good can come out of this – only bad.

(This is of course besides the point that frum children and others are being introduced to a TV show full of the low culture of today that they would have never been introduced before)

musical, though I disagree with your first point, I think it is just as valid a perspective as mine is. But your second point is questionable. the show, for better or for worse, is a variety show and talent show very much in the tradition of 80, 70, and 60 years ago, even before television and in its earliest days. The idea isn’t new, nor is it something two to three generations of Jews in America haven’t encountered before. I’ve not made up my mind, but I don’t see it as a chilul hashem; perhaps not a kidush hashem per se, but a good boy from a good family using the gift HKBH gave him? He sings Jewish songs too, apparently.
