Im currently upstate. If anyone is in Brooklyn please fill us in on what things are looking like and what you are dealing with over there. Here it is just raining non-stop but the wind is tame.
August 28, 2011 5:35 am at 5:35 am #804722TomcheMemberSame in Brooklyn (currently).
August 28, 2011 5:38 am at 5:38 am #804723CR 1Memberits getting pretty windy in flatbush i cant believe they closed the casinos and bars
August 28, 2011 5:38 am at 5:38 am #804724WIYMemberThanks
August 28, 2011 5:40 am at 5:40 am #804725always runs with scissors fastParticipantlol CR1, I hope you’re joking right?
August 28, 2011 5:42 am at 5:42 am #804726LemonySnicketParticipantIt’s raining heavily and pretty windy but so far not too terrible. My basement is getting flooded up though.
August 28, 2011 5:46 am at 5:46 am #804727TweetTweetParticipantExtremely windy now in Brooklyn with heavy rain. So far gusts have reached up to 45mph. There are tree branches scattered all over the streets, and it’s only going to get worse over the next few hours.
August 28, 2011 5:54 am at 5:54 am #804728Sam2ParticipantI personally don’t want to see any more updates. No one should be outside or near a window to see this. It’s just silly and not safe. Don’t risk your life and/or health so that you can tell a few random people in the CR what is going on right now.
August 28, 2011 5:56 am at 5:56 am #804729TomcheMemberBeing near a closed window is unsafe?
August 28, 2011 5:57 am at 5:57 am #804730TweetTweetParticipantWhoa let’s not go overboard. Maybe you shouldn’t go outside, but nothing is going to happen by looking out the window. This is not a category 3 storm.
August 28, 2011 5:59 am at 5:59 am #804731WIYMemberHave any trees fallen in Brooklyn?
August 28, 2011 6:03 am at 6:03 am #804732TweetTweetParticipantOK. Latest update on the hurricane 5 minutes ago from the National Weather Service- Irene is still a category 1 Hurricane with winds at 80mph. The eye of Irene is 189 miles away from NYC.
August 28, 2011 6:03 am at 6:03 am #804733observanteenMemberJust heard a massive “boom!”. A big branch probably fell on our roof, but I’m scared to go out to make sure. Whoa, the winds are strong. Hope there won’t be a blackout…:(
August 28, 2011 6:04 am at 6:04 am #804734ronrsrMemberI will bet lots of trees have fallen. The ground is very wet, and Brooklyn is getting lots of wind.
I live near Boston, and my neighbor has a tree that is leaning at about a 30 degree angle towards his house. He has not taken care of it since I alerted him about it two years ago.
The hurricane is slated to start here at 5am. Anyone care to guess what time the tree will hit his house? We can start a pool, perhaps?
August 28, 2011 6:19 am at 6:19 am #804735ronrsrMemberif it helps, it is a very tall pine tree.
August 28, 2011 6:31 am at 6:31 am #804736always hereParticipantI’m upstate. it’s been raining steadily. I love the sound of the rain, but it’s dripping down in 2 spots in my bungalow bedroom. the bungalows are 80+ yrs. old & in disrepair :/ I’m afraid to go to sleep, in case I havta get outta this bungalow fast, CV’S!! I’m alone in here & hope I don’t havta run over to my daughter’s bungalow 🙁
August 28, 2011 6:33 am at 6:33 am #804737ronrsrMemberMy roof started leaking this afternoon – I hired a roofer to replace the entire roof over two weeks ago, so I am a bit angry at him.

August 28, 2011 6:54 am at 6:54 am #804739bein_hasdorimParticipantWhat I want to know is, if we will be able to go boating down 13th Ave tomorrow? If yes will Bloomberg find a way to give tickets.
August 28, 2011 6:58 am at 6:58 am #804740HaLeiViParticipantTweet, yeah, it’s definitely a dangerous time to go overboard.
August 28, 2011 7:10 am at 7:10 am #804741WIYMemberBein hasdorim
you will probably get a ticket for non-evacuation.
August 28, 2011 7:19 am at 7:19 am #804742Queen BeeMemberLOL, bein_hasdorim! That would be interesting.
August 28, 2011 7:28 am at 7:28 am #804743TomcheMemberAt 3:30 AM, it is raining a little bit with heavy winds.
August 28, 2011 7:30 am at 7:30 am #804744Y.W. EditorKeymasterLatest update from NYC just posted in storm coverage section.
Be safe everyone.
August 28, 2011 11:57 am at 11:57 am #804745cherrybimParticipantSwaying trees… very scary… and six deaths have already occurred due to falling limbs. Stay home until winds have stopped, and even then be careful of tree weakened limbs.
August 28, 2011 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #804746mazal77ParticipantAt 9;10 AM, Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Flooding still poses a problem in some areas, but it’s just a really bad storm now. Hopefully the worst has passed us in Brooklyn.
August 28, 2011 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #804747brotherofursParticipantok it wasn’t so bad b”H
August 28, 2011 2:58 pm at 2:58 pm #804748ObaminatorMemberYup, looks like it was a total bust. A big tado over nothing. A little wind, a little rain, vzeh hu. Not much to talk about other than a bunch of hype.
The city probably used this Tropical Storm (it wasn’t even a hurricane by time it reached NY) as a drill for future preparedness.
August 28, 2011 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #804749yossi z.MemberAs a drill? As if they knew it was going to be nothing? I doubt that. I was informed that we very may well only be sitting in the eye of the storm and there is still more to come
😀 Zuberman! 😀
August 28, 2011 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #804750ronrsrMemberDefinitrly not a drill. If things had played out a bit differently, it had the potential to be much, mich worse.
In Boston our power is out, our ceiling is dripping, but we are safe and secure.
August 28, 2011 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #804751TomcheMemberIt’s over. Not much happened.
August 28, 2011 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm #804752ronrsrMemberIt’s not over. Do not be deceived.
August 28, 2011 3:59 pm at 3:59 pm #804753charliehallParticipanthigh winds and flooding still to come in much of the area
August 28, 2011 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #804754ronrsrMemberPower is back on. Many thanks to our municipal power company. I will pay this month’s bill without a single grumble.
August 28, 2011 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #804755Queen BeeMemberI didn’t sleep at all last night. House and everyone are okay, though, B”H.
August 28, 2011 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #804756bein_hasdorimParticipantSorry guys, no boating in bklyn.
Well just have to meet tomorrow by the delaware.
B”H!!! Almost everyone seems alright, although I got some disturbing text about a boy, R”L I hope it’s not true.
August 28, 2011 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #804757TomcheMemberbein: In Monsey or Brooklyn?
August 28, 2011 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #804758always hereParticipantI finally fell asleep a little after 5am. woke up around 8am to no power– which @ this bungalow colony means no running water, no toilet flushing(selicha). power went back up about 2 hrs. ago. lost power for 3-4 hrs. total. it’s drizzling & breezy now. B’H!
August 28, 2011 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #804759ronrsrMemberThey just arrested a guy in Hull, MA who was trying to surf and refused to leave the beach when asked by police.
August 28, 2011 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #804760always hereParticipanta tree cracked, broke & fell in our colony towards someone’s bungalow a short while ago….B”H all are okay. it’s still veryy windy up here.
