Under the influence
No comment.
While the repercussions of the comments may seem harmless for travel tips and restaurant recommendations, that might not be the case when it comes to more serious decisions in life. Commenters across the web dole out financial advice, medical counseling, and relationship tips.
The solution, according to the researchers, is for publishers to actively participate in discussions and chime in when readers give unsound advice based on misinformation. Researchers believe that when paired with the right moderation strategy, internet comments can actually provide new insight that readers might not otherwise have access to.
Playing the blame game
Readers everywhere can benefit from the diverse opinions available on the open web. Through internet comments, we can tap into the personal experiences of strangers and the industry expertise of people like TheEarthquakeGuy, which ultimately helps us make more informed decisions.

May 1, 2016 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #1150114JosephParticipantYWN (as does Hamodia and Yated) regularly republishes outside content.

May 1, 2016 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #1150116JosephParticipantThis article isn’t from the blogosphere.
May 1, 2016 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #1150117🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantits from a disqus – blog. and then there are lots of comments under it that were neither written by frumma yidden nor moderated. if i was browsing in places i shouldnt be, i wouldnt be so quick to let evryone know about it.
May 1, 2016 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1150118JosephParticipantDisqus is a comment system used on news media sites and any other site that integrates it, it isn’t a blog. My source had no comments for the above, just the article as I posted it. If you read something inappropriate I’m surprised your filter didn’t filter it.
May 1, 2016 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #1150119🍫Syag LchochmaParticipanti am aware of that. it says blog on the top of the screen. maybe they just mean that if you feel like blogging about it you can click there.
why would i have read any of the comments? my point was that you are the one that brought it over. did you randomly find your browser on that page or were you surfing around? a person would have to find it in order to present it. usually a person looks for it in order to find it. If i was looking around on secular non moderated sites i would not be so quick to advertise it by presenting articles i came across.
the internet is a dangerous place.
May 1, 2016 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #1150120JosephParticipantYou make too many assumptions. It was linked from a kosher source. I have no idea where you read it; it may have been reposted elsewhere. I was simply surprised you don’t have a filter that didn’t prevent your seeing the inappropriate comments you came across. My filter wouldn’t let it get to my screen.
May 1, 2016 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm #1150121Little FroggieParticipantOh is it controlling my thoughts… esp. comments on a certain site..
May 1, 2016 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm #1150122🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantbefore you go on with your diversions, can you please copy and paste the quote where I say I read or came across something inappropriate?
thanks
May 1, 2016 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm #1150123JosephParticipant“and then there are lots of comments under it that were neither written by frumma yidden nor moderated.”
I sure didn’t came across them (probably due to filtering), and I was surprised they could get to you unfiltered.
May 1, 2016 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #1150124🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantThat’s right, that’s where i told you that there are comments underneath, a function of disqus. where’s the part that says I saw inappropriate comments? (as youve claimed twice)
May 2, 2016 12:08 am at 12:08 am #1150125JosephParticipantLinguistically your point that they are unmoderated and written by nisht frumma is your indication that they are inappropriate. I was a bit surprised at your familiarity with inappropriate content from viewing it on the wild internet. A decent kosher filter should block it.
May 2, 2016 12:57 am at 12:57 am #1150126🍫Syag LchochmaParticipant“Linguistically your point that they are unmoderated and written by nisht frumma is your indication that they are inappropriate”
oh good, so you admit that i never said anything about having read any comments and your diversionary tactics aren’t really getting you anywhere.
I googled the first paragraph, saw the only source that showed up, and knew that disqus on a secular blog would be unmoderated comments by non-frumma yidden.
so what, exactly, was your excuse?
May 2, 2016 1:33 am at 1:33 am #1150127JosephParticipantExcuse for following a kosher link in a filtered connection to a post without comments? Guilty as charged!
But you seem overly familiar with unmoderated comments by nisht frumma. How are you so familiar where to find them and know exactly where and what they are? You even, somehow, knew that “there are lots of comments under it”. Did you count how many unfiltered comments there were?
May 2, 2016 1:49 am at 1:49 am #1150128🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantgrasping at straws…
May 2, 2016 2:26 am at 2:26 am #1150129JosephParticipantYou better not eat them while you’re still grasping them…
May 2, 2016 3:15 am at 3:15 am #1150130👑RebYidd23ParticipantAre you implying what it seems like you’re implying?
May 2, 2016 11:29 am at 11:29 am #1150131🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantthere was no question my comment was not directed at myself. Im not the one who peruses the web and then gets defensive about it.
May 2, 2016 12:16 pm at 12:16 pm #1150132☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIs defending yourself the same thing as getting defensive?
May 2, 2016 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #1150133🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantnot in any way, but thanks once again for your tireless efforts
May 2, 2016 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #1150134yichusdikParticipantWell, kudos to Joseph who attributed material that he cut and pasted from another site to its author. Its a good start.
OTOH, the point of the post? Its nothing that doesn’t happen in conversations that take place face to face, across the table at lunch, at kiddush, or in the letters to the editor. Sure, there’s less in the way of anonymity, but unless you know your interlocutor quite well, you don’t know what qualifies them to offer an opinion on anything. And yet, they do, no doubt influencing yo, the listener at least as much as an online post.
Once again we must rely on the sechel HKBH gave us and the upbringing our parents and our melamdim ensured to help us navigate through life, which includes what restaurant to eat at and and where to get new tires, and most pertinently, what advice makes good sense and what does not.
Read all the comments, listen to all the know it alls over cholent and rye, but use the head HKBH gave you.
May 2, 2016 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm #1150135☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWell, I think he defended himself. Not sure why you think it was okay to attack him.

That’s excellent advice. Because of how Hashem made us, it takes special effort to do that, and most people don’t (even if they think they do).
