This is probably a specail custom made piece with an exclusive foundation.

You can get a top quality sheitel for about 12 or 1500 US dollars.

fortunately, I am a husband so I should really stay away from this thread, but Unfortunately this is a big problem nowadays. The women want to look their best(I don’t blame them) but doing so costs an arm and a leg.

Well smart ty first for asking, being single i have no idea what the going rate for a wig is but that seems awfully steep for a pile of hair, I don’t mean that in a bad way at all i know it is for a very important mitzvah but that just seems wayyyy too much.

    I love this thread!

My wife’s great grandmother asked that her children and grandchildren (god knows till when…) should wear only synthetic wigs. At some point my wife was thinking of droping it. Sometimes I think to myself that her shaitel looks horrible! But now that I see these numbers… Its beautiful already! Aint letting her change… 🙂

The most i ever spent was $1,700 which i felt was high. However, i stick with the same person the past few years who has good quality hair and even have a sheitel for over 11 years and still in good condition.

It is not fair to say whether it is a good price, fair or crazy. You have to decide for yourself depending on your previous experience. One has to take all variables into account. The color for one thing is a very important variable. A blonde sheitel with different highlights cost more than a dark sheitel. Red hair is also more expensive because it is less available and harder to match. Better hair and a better well known company will charge for their experience and quality. The price usually includes the cut as well, so one has to take into consideration the experience of the stylist you are buying from and how much that is worth to you.

The fit of the sheitel is also very important. If you are hard to fit, or need custom sizing that is a consideration as well. If you will wear the sheitel everyday or if it is a Shabbos sheitel that won’t get as much use is another consideration. Is the piece a quality piece that will last a long time? Is it from someone you can trust? Usually you get what you pay for.

Many women look to buy a cheaper piece because they buy more often and therefore they justify each purchase with “it wasn’t such a good piece or I didn’t spend so much on it”. If you intend to use it for a long time, make sure it is a quality piece.

These are some of the reasons I am saying that one shouldn’t take it upon themselves to comment so quickly without even knowing the variables. Buying a sheitel is not as simple as buying a pair of shoes or a purse. It is an individual choice depending on ones individual circumstances.

    Thanks for all your responses.

As Aries said, it really is a very major decision, and I do appreciate when posters explain the reason for their response. Not just- yes/no etc.

I’m looking for advice and reasonings as to why I should go for it or not. (That’s why I asked men to stay away- they don’t understand!). I’m wondering if anyone saw a big difference between a $1000 wig and a $2000. Is it worth the cost?

I just bought a wig for close to $2,000 that I hate (I dont want to mention where), so proceed with caution.

The best wig I ever bought was from Cathy who used to be on 42nd street, nr 16th Ave in a house in BP. This was about 8 years ago. Shes no longer in business, as far as most people know. None of her old customers who Ive spoken to, know where she is.

fortune had a sale a few weeks before yuntif, i went in there not knowing anything came out with 3 long sheitals my color, which is not easy to find (which is somewhere between light brown/dark blonde) all human hair, i got them cut and styled and bought 2 sheital boxes and 3 heads and other accessories and spent about $2000 total and i am very happy. the wigs alone where $1575, the cuts were $100 each so $300 total and the accessories were about $200, who knew a 18″ sheital box is $75!?!?!

anyways a random lady told me at a bar mitzva a few weeks ago that its better to buy a cheaper wig in the beginning until you get a feel for the cut and style you want….if you spend $4000 on a wig and cut bangs…its not growing back if u realize u look horrible in bangs or wtvr the case maybe….basically its all about maintenance anyways, treat ur shaitel well and itll look good, u dont have to spend ur lifes savings to look good, but perhaps thats for another thread…

    Smartcookie, I totally understand!

It is both normal and crazy as we strive to look good in a modest way and not waste money. My family traditionally have always had long hair when married which we keep well styled but covered up under scarves/snoods,idea being to look good at home for our husbands but be modest in the street. But now my married daughters wear sheitels which are both very expensive and very nice, their husbands are always amazed by the prices, but want their wives to be happy. Goodtip though, now looking at sheitel prices which are so high, think tzedeka, we have started to give 10% of what we pay for a glamorous sheitel to tzedeka, especially those medical charities that pay to help victims of illness or terror recover from scars birthmarks. As my girls go looking for a cadillac of a sheitel to buy they have now think about someone living less fortunate, good discipline all round. Sometimes they come home, and think they might just stick to a scarf for weekdays.

Goq- nobody said husbands CAN’T have an opinion! It’s just that in most cases, husbands pay for that new Sheitel, so they’ll say it’s definitely insane to spend that amount!

It is the price many people are charging (and getting) for this little item. That said, the only way to bring this obscene price down is for people to STOP buying them. (Like that’s gonna happen…).

One way is to start making use of sheitel gemachs or selling and buying used sheitlach (get over it, they wash out the cooties). When the sellers see no one is buying their overpriced product, they will be forced to lower those prices. Then people will start buying again en masse, and the whole nonsense will start all over again. We can’t win.

I have never bought myself a sheitel for over $400 (and no, I haven’t bought in a LOOOOOOOONG time). I can’t afford it. My machetenista and I shared the cost of our kallah’s sheitel, and it still came to about $800 each. Ridiculous.

IMHO, (and I know that I am a husband, but I would like to offer my opinion anyways,) if my wife looks stunning in a $2400 shaitel (& she does!)and she is happy with it and takes care of it, gezunterheit, may she wear it in good health and happiness for many years to come. When the boss is happy, everyone’s happy. Us men also have some expensive item to make US happy too: cars, electronic gadgets, tools, etc,(and yes, for some maybe even clothes). I think it’s very expensive, yeah, but if thats the going rate in that quality shaitel- go for it. So, what can I say, I love when my wife looks pretty and is happy.

NOTE: this opinion was typed BEFORE I had my first drink of the day 🙂

$2400 is ok for a sheitel, but make sure that you’re not taken to the cleaners. I mean, make sure that you don’t take the sheitel to the cleaners; unless you want to face the judge.

Unfortunately, thats not outragous for a nice long-ish (below the shoulders) shabbos sheitel. But that is why for weekdays I went with a $500 band fall. I keep my sheitels well (no blow-driers!) and they last me a long time. (like 10 years for my last shabbos sheitel!)

There are definitely less costly, very nice, options out there but I buy them so rarely that for me it was worth that price.

cshapiro: wow! thats amazing! and yes shaitel boxes are that expensive. I decided to do without the box. I wear my shaitel to my inlaws and when i have to take it off, i put it on a shaitel head.

smartcookie: I have a long shaitel, dark brown, that i bought 3 1/2 years ago. Its in perfect condition and i only had to dye it 2 times. Its my shabbos shaitel so i dont wear it as often as my weekday. Both my shabbos (a very long one cost $800) and weekday (which is a pony for $475) i bought at milano. Very cheap and long lasting. Every time i tell someone where and when i got it they are surprised. i dont know why, but they are.

I find that shaitels are a mazel. I know of 3 people, friends and family, who bought at shevy – who has a great name, and were not so happy. Others rave about her. I personally cant afford a shevy, but i wouldnt jump to an expensive shaitel company right away. Cuz like i mentioned, i got cheaper shaitels and have great experiences.

I have heard of fortune wigs before and heard they are wonderful and cheap. I bought one for 2650! its nuts but thats how much the nice ones are going for.

cshapiro- I personally think that when you get married you should get everything nice and new and even spend a little more than you normally would. you aren’t gonna have the money once you walk down the aisle. and now its the parents cc but soon it becomes yours!

miritchka: If your sheitel is 3 1/2 years old and your already had to dye it twice, I hate to break it to you, but it was not a good sheitel. I dyed my Shevy for the first time when it was 5 years old!! And I wore it EVERY day – 3 years daily on the subway too! (And believe it or not the subway/Manhattan grime IS hard on your sheitel.) A dye job – from the box for $10, or professionally for $75+ will last about the same 6 months. It is great that your are happy with the less expensive sheitels, but don’t delude yourself. A Milano is very nice, but its not a Shevy or a Claire. (Though obviously its also about the piece, the cut, and how you maintain it.)

adorable: you mean take advantage of your parents $? why? dont they give you enough? dont you think that spending that kind of money when you can get one of similar or sometimes better quality for less is a nice thing a kallah can do for her parents who have so much to pay for already? (sorry about the run on!!) I can understand that someone would buy such an expensive one after their married a few years and knows what style (s)he likes (i still think its silly to spend so much, but i can understand it more in this situation). What do you think?

    #822018

Heimishe Mom: I hear ya’. My point was that there are other shaitels that are just as good as those expensive shaitels. The quality of the hair is very good in my milano, it sits and sets well. Maybe I do have to dye it more often than you do, but i sure hope you dont have to dye it “as often” as i do! After all, i’m sure you paid a pretty penny for that! I did pay less and i have to say that for the price i paid, i got very much ahead.

No offense to those who spend alot, but you can get a good shaitel for less. And even if i had to dye it every 6 months, like someone i know, i would still come out ahead at $75 a dye.

One last point, i’m not a shaitel macher and dont claim to know so much about shaitels, but doesnt the hair color have to do with when you decide to dye it? Dont some hair colors have longer life than others? Dont some dye’s last longer than others?

Baal Habooze- that’s basically my husband’s attitude too. But I’m not that kind of “spender”. Even though I know he agrees to spend this amount, I have to know for myself, if it’s right. Meanwhile I still have a guilty conscience!

    Heimishe Mom. Miritchke, and others:

I realize that there are great Sheitels out there for a $1000. But I have to say that this $2400 looked and felt like no other one I previously owned! I looked around at many companies, and this was something amazing! (Hopefully)

Hey, I just had a terrific idea:

Buy a $50 shaitel from Paula Young

Buy a gift for hubby for the remaining $2350, and he will love you just the way you are!

I’m surprised no one else thought of this.
