What should i buy my niece for a bas mitzvah present?
a camera or wristlet.
ask her mother. its also about budget. a nice siddur with her name, a piece of silver jewelry (or a gift certificate). if a camera is in your budget you can also get 16″ tri-colored pearl necklace. (bas mitzvah #2 was this year)
Just make sure it isn’t pink. (Bad memories…)
A nice megilla or haggadah. it will only get used twice a year, but she will have it forever.
there is a great bas mitzva book out now by artscroll with illustrations by Rabbi yona weinreb. Titled: The Bat Mitzvah Treasury
A collection of illumination, calligraphy, inspiring messages, essays and laws.
Seems very straightforward and interesting got it twice, both girls loved it. Mazel Tov!
Ask her. She’ll probably have opinions if you ask some leading questions. If not, a gift certificate to her favorite store, in a predetermined amount, can be great, or just some money smuggled to her mom and SHE buys it :).
I do not know your budget but since she is your niece you should spend a decent amount. A nice piece of gold jewelry is something that she will appreciate. An electronic is a nice alternative solution. It also depends on how to the right she is. A designer bag is another gift suggestion.
We are grappling with this same question for our niece. We asked her mother which Chumash our niece would like:- e.g. Artscroll Ramban or Hirsch or Baal haTurim.
She got back to us, that her daughter is more interested in jewelry. We feel, that jewelry will just join a jewelry collection, and maybe eventually get lost, whereas a specific Sepher will last a long while, even if not used more often until later in lfe.
Meanwhile we have still not procured anything, despite the passage of several months.

Thank you so much abcd2 for your suggestion; Unfortunately, Book of Our Heritage is out of print, so in light of our niece having some talent for math/arithmetic, and last week’s Artscroll sale on sets, we bought her a Ba’al haTurim Chumash set.
