This happens much too often. YWN just posted a video on this & I just had the same thing last week with my child… close call!
We have to do something about it…ANY IDEAS?
September 3, 2018 11:13 am at 11:13 am #1584982MenoParticipantWell the buses can stop at an angle to prevent cars from passing, but then people complain that it’s illegal blah blah
September 3, 2018 11:13 am at 11:13 am #1584985Reb EliezerParticipantIt is a chilul Hashem. If you know who it is, admonish him first privately. If this does not work, follow the Rambam Hilchas Deas 6:8 for heavenly things.
September 3, 2018 11:46 am at 11:46 am #1585007slominerParticipantThere is a widescale issue of school bus drivers driving with their flashing lights activated while they’re driving rather just when they’re stopped to pickup or discharge children. (Flashing lights legally means drivers cannot pass in adjac This driver abuse unfortunately causes drivers to disrespect the flashing lights.

I have never, ever seen this. Why would they do that?
Though I have seen drivers refrain from activating their lights and stop signs so as not to inconvenience other motorists.

I sympathize with matter of chilul Hashem. However, that is not the real issue here. The sakanah involved is the real issue, and discussion about the percentages of tragedies from committing this offense are wasted. Danger with small and otherwise insignificant numbers is danger, and halacha states this frequently. One is mechalel Shabbos on a sofeik sakanah. The spiritual issues are not our business here. The practical safety ones are. I would advocate reporting such violations immediately, and the fact that the fool gets a ticket should not be mesira.
September 3, 2018 12:21 pm at 12:21 pm #1585045slominerParticipantI’ve seen it a lot. I assume the bus drivers put on their flashing lights while driving because they want to monopolize the road, for example when turning at intersections, by intimidating other drivers to yielding them the first right of way even when they’re not entitled to it.
September 4, 2018 6:29 am at 6:29 am #1586055iacisrmmaParticipantlaskern:
How do you know it was a yid driving? Because it is Boro Park? This problem is widespread not just in our community.September 4, 2018 6:30 am at 6:30 am #1586067anonymous JewParticipantslominer, i’ve also never seen this “widescale” occurence. Besides, on wide streets with 4 lanes flashing lights can’t stop you from using the lane and on routine 2 lane streets, why are you trying to pass a moving bus ( flashing lights or not ) ?
September 4, 2018 7:07 am at 7:07 am #1586074slominerParticipantIn a four lane street technically flashing lights doesn’t stop you from passing a moving bus, but many drivers will not pass even if the bus is driving with its lights flashing. Same when the bus is making a left turn with its lights flashing, many drivers going straight or making a right will yield even though they have the right of way, since the bus is driving with its lights flashing.
September 4, 2018 7:21 am at 7:21 am #1586078ZionGateParticipantFirst, the school bus drivers have to stop intimidating and menacing other drivers. They tailgate you into intersections while blaring their horns, pick up kids right at the corner past intersection so that you get stuck there…. your light changes to red and now you’re stuck… They swerve in front of you recklessly as u approach intersection and speed into a left…. All of this while kids are on the bus…
September 4, 2018 11:39 am at 11:39 am #1586249iacisrmmaParticipantanonymous jew: Please tell me where you find this exemption on 4 lane roads in the NYS VTL? Passing a school bus with lights flashing and the stop sign out is covered by Section 1174 and it makes no distinction between a 2 lane or 4 lane roadway.
September 4, 2018 12:12 pm at 12:12 pm #1586279JosephParticipantIn NYC you cannot pass a school bus with flashing lights even if you’re passing on the opposite side of traffic.
September 4, 2018 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #1587024anonymous JewParticipantJoseph and iacsrmma, I’m not stupid. He was talking about not passing a MOVING bus that had its light flashing. Where does it say that you cannot pass a moving bus?
September 4, 2018 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #1587220slominerParticipantThe law doesn’t say that you cannot pass a moving school bus with flashing lights. But the vast majority of motorists are not experts in state traffic laws. All most of them know is that you cannot pass a school bus with flashing lights. So when an idiot bus driver is MOVING with his lights flashing, many motorists confusingly yield to the bus even though traffic law is that they should not yield, thereby disrupting the flow of traffic behind them.
September 12, 2018 11:00 am at 11:00 am #1590044slominerParticipantSchool restarted, another morning and another aggressive school bus driver blatantly violating driving laws and other’s right of way when he’s making left turns.
September 12, 2018 2:13 pm at 2:13 pm #1590154qsmanParticipantAre you saying they are using the RED flashing light with the RED STOP sign out and flashing?
Or are you referring to the YELLOW lights that warn drivers that they are about to stop???
Can you please post actual footage of this accusation?September 12, 2018 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #1590195iacisrmmaParticipantqsman: Whose post are you commenting on? The thread started over a video clearly showing a car passing a stopped school bus with the yellow lights flashing and the stop sign out.

September 12, 2018 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #1590233JosephParticipantWhat’s the difference between flashing yellow and flashing red lights on a school bus?
September 12, 2018 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #1590249qsmanParticipantNot sure why tge rest of my post did not appear.
There is nothing ILLEGAL about passing a bus with the yellow lights. People who do so are trying to beat the red lights
Passing a Stopped School Bus
In New York, it is mandatory for motorists to stop for school buses that have their red warning lights activated, whether they are approaching or following a school bus.If the bus has its yellow lights flashing, that means the bus is preparing to stop.
By law, a driver approaching a school bus must stop from either direction when encountering a school bus in the process of loading or unloading students:
