    Chulent used to be an exclusive food for shabbos. Now, people eat chulent all the time. Any time. Day or night.

    Yeshivos serve chulent many times a week. lunch, dinner, onegs, melava malka’s, snacks. You name it…

    What do you think…?

    When I saw this thread I got so excited. My favorite food is chulent it is really really good! I could eat it everyday. The school where I teach (a boys school) gives chulent out as a prize to the kids and they love it.

    -Kapusta the way chulent came into being is that the Tzidokim believed in only Torah shbichsav and they held that you can’t have a fire burning on Shabbos so the Chachamim said that we should eat something hot on Shabbos so that we show we are not like them. In poland and Russia they had a lot of potatoes and…….thats where chulent came from!

    People think it’s strange that I am a girl and I love chulent but I don’t see that as a contridiction

    kapusta-I didn’t think that there is food that you can only eat on Shabbos. In my house we eat leftovers and that is food from Shabbos. I don’t know about you.

    Qaws- The candy machines at YW headquarters have been broken for a while so we are stuck with chulent, kugel (and coffee). :}

    uh oh, am I on a mods bad side? (sniffle, sniffle)

    postsem, I’m not saying that, I mean shabbos is supposed to be special, like special food you wouldnt have during the week. Cake, better wine, etc

    55, try some lasagna.

    ok, this week I will do something diff, instead of putting my kugel in my chicken soup, I will have my kugel on a plate and I will pour a few spoonfuls of soup on top of it and have a carrot and celery from the soup on the side…

    72: have you ever tried putting potatoes in the chicken soup while it cooks the soup?! while adding all the soup condiments, add a like 2-3 whole potatoes! it tastes delicious! & can also be served as a side dish too!

    Ames, kugel is a staple, you have variety with meat, chicken and whatever, but not potato kugel.

    It’s so funny to me. I never ate potato kugel growing up and I still never really had a good piece (I guess, Jax), but my siblings who also never ate potato kugel love it. I guess I’m kugel deprived.

    This is so confusing. I posted a kugel comment in the cholent thread.

    By the way, is it CHOLENT or CHULENT?

    Ames, I know I take breaks from it, but technically I could eat it every week.

    chulent is not really chulent during the week. it’s called stew. and the taste is not the same taste because of shabbos. but go ahead and enjoy it anyway.
