The dangers of an ipod touch are numerous, but I think one of the biggest problems is the fact that one can have one and no one will ever no about it because its sleek and small, thereby affording anyone who gets one access to (unfiltered) internet. Parents should always be aware of what their children possess and be suspicious of unscrupolous behavior. This problem many have from being exposed to inappriate material online is definately UNDEREPORTED. I’m still in yeshiva and see that boys have lots of problems because of exposure. Pls no what your children are doing and put the nec filters on. Jnet offers good filters for blackberrys, ipod touches and iphones have other options in the app store

I’m still waiting for Artscroll to come out with some of their seforim or at least books for the Kindle. I cant seem to find any in the “Kindle Books” store at amazon. If anyone knows of any, please share.

It’s interesting to note a similarity between English and Hebrew/Yiddish idiomatic usage.
In English, people use “literally” when they mean the exact opposite (“I literally died of laughter”). And in Hebrew, they do exactly the same thing with the word “Mamash.”
Not discounting that there may be terrible dangers involved with owning an Ipod touch, I don’t know of too many people who have “mamash” died as a result of owning one.

Perhaps… and I know that I shouldn’t disagree with you because I’m clearly not very smart, but when people use the term “pikuach nefesh,” they’re usually referring to the physical.

i have heard it much more often used in the spiritual sense in general conversation and shmoozim.
in learning it is usually used to refer to the physical aspect.

Wolf: For children, there is also the danger from strangers and chatrooms. There is a physical danger as well as the spiritual one.

Teach your children to use devices like this properly (and I’m assuming the “kids” with these are more likely 18+ because who gives a 14 year old an ipod touch?), get a proper filter and constantly keep the lines of communication open.
Any iPod is a danger to children. Besides internet dangers, there is a danger of getting addicted to it.
I didn’t try yet, but can you not put a filter on it for example k9, just as on your pc?
I don’t allow my kids any gadgets with video capability. However, I get complaints from one of them who claims that they all have screens now except for the lowest one (Ipod Shuffle), and he can’t see or control what song plays on that type of model which he has.
Anyway, I tell him that unfortunately, many kids have far worse problems to deal with R”L, such as health, parnasa, being an orphan, so that should be the least of his worries. Second, I tell him that when I was growing up, we also had no way to see the names of songs or effectively control the order on our LP’s, cassette players or CD players, yet we all survived, and were very happy kids.

Sadly in this day and age it is in style to spoil your kids and there are plenty teenagers and even tweens with fancy ipods, phones and other gadgets and gizmos. Some parents are clueless about the capabilities of these devices and others think that their child wont do anything wrong. Parents have a huge achrayus today to be on top of their kids and what they are being exposed to.
