am I allowed to break a rule a second time?

    kapusta:

    poor choice of words 😉

Reminds me of a dvar torah.

Question is why in the first bracha do we say praises that chazal tell us to say. It makes more sense when giving praise to do it in your own words, it should be what the person himself feels. Right?

The answer is that no matter how much praise you give or what you say it wouldnt even come close to explaining how great god is. In fact it may even be considered an insult. It is like telling someone who has a trillion dollars that they have a lot of money. Not only does it not come close to describing it but it is insulting to rfer to it in such a way.

So basically no matter what words you use it would be a poor choice of words

Now no one can say i never give a dvar torah 😉

ames, looks like you do have some spare time on your hands. Maybe call up a local chessed organization (bikur cholim, chai lifeline, etc.) and volunteer for them.

I don’t think that a person has to be volunteering or giving his/her time in order to be reaching his/her potential. As we discussed previously, it’s the little things that make big people, the extra smile, bending down to pick up something for someone, holding the door open. Do these things take more than one minute? No. Do those things make a huge difference to you? To the world? Yes! What I meant to say before was that seeing that you do spend time in the CR, you might have some time on your hands that can be used a bit more productively, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Does this make sense to you?

ames- we hear about all the big heroes of the world and specifically Klal Yisrael but the vast majority of us don’t have a role to play in the limelight. An old friend of mine used to say exactly what you’re saying but I disagree. We all have to complete the specific tikkun that our neshama needs and that usually means living your life the way a Jew should. We should think in all our relationships including with Hashem are we acting properly. And am I constantly trying to grow in my commitment to mitzvos? Most of us are not meant to be the Chofetz Chaim or Sara Schenirer who both had a tremendous impact on all religious Jews.

I guess I don’t know you so I can’t help you with that. I think, though, that I’ve heard such things from other people. People seem to have this misconception that if they’re not the one who’s running the chinese auction for ____________ or fundraising for ___________ or arranging a program for _______________, they’re not doing something important and they feel like it’s not enough. I think I understand what you’re saying. Am I getting you? If yes, what I meant before is that if you’re doing the best you can at this point in your life of taking care of your family and doing YOUR best. People are asked why they were not the best they could’ve been, not why they were not as good as their neighbor.

For the people who do have the time and ability for the “big” things and are not doing them, well, they may not be reaching their potential. Every person has to do the his/her best with the circumstances that God has given to him.

ames: Famous saying “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.” My point is you change the world one small thing at a time which eventually adds up. Not by doing something heroic to save the world from blowing up. That only happens in movies not in real life, but I do know the feeling.

    nice DT!

just wanted to clarify for kapusta. When she said poor choice of words, she meant the irony of using “unbelievable” as opposed to using something like “amazing” because if you BELIEVE there is a G-d, then He is quite, well, BELIEVABLE! 😉

ames- if you see a need for initiative in some specific area then go for it. But if you feel like you’re wasting your talents but don’t know where to invest them, I say wait for the opportunity to present itself. People who do the “big” stuff usually find themselves in a situation where something big needs to be done and they take the opportunity to use the talents they were blessed with. I don’t think there is a way of searching out such things. In the meantime, whatever fills your days now, strive to do in the best way you can.

IF you want to do something then its the yetzer hora if you dont really want to do it then its the yetzer tov

ames- unfortunately that’s too true. The yetzer hara has gotten to be such a pro he sounds like the yetzer tov already. I find that thinking about how you will feel/react after you’ve done what the voice says OR what kind of results it will bring- you can differentiate if it’s good or bad. Think ahead

ames, (i’m gonna sound like the biggest hypocrite now) a guy once told me that when the yetzer hatov talks he says “we” and “i” as opposed to the yetzer hora who uses “you”

so i guess that’s the difference between “i don’t wanna do that” and “you don’t wanna do that.”

isn’t it a better idea to keep in the back of your mind (not that you should be constantly thinking about this or anything) that whatever age you are, you could possibly die tomorrow? 40 or not, you don’t have all the time in the world.

well the email disappeared, so I’ll shorten it for you. Basically, a person realized he was getting older and he didn’t have too much time left. He sat down one day and figured out how long the average life span is, and how many years he had left. Then he figured out how many sundays he had left to spend with his family and friends and took a jar, and put in a marble for each sunday. As each sunday went by, he took a marble out of the jar and put it in another jar. The jar got emptier and emptier… Our time is limited, accomplish something!

    the email actually sounded good…

WOW! I didn’t mean it that way at all. I’m sorry whoever took offense at that.

aussie, I am no adult, I’m hardly older than you and although what AOB said is true, no, I do NOT live my life thinking that way at all. All I meant was this:

AOB: Technically the entire world could be destroyed with in 12 hours (probably less) with the use of nuclear missles, but if you went around thinking about that all day you wouldnt be able to live a normal life.

    To quote Robert Browning:

    “Grow old along with me!

The best is yet to be,

the last of life, for which the first was made.

Our times are in his hand who saith,

    ‘A whole I planned, youth shows but half;

Trust God: See all, nor be afraid”

wasn’t sure where to put this, but i like this thread…

why is the #1 moshol/analogy for girls always “you’re a princess, daughter of the king, etc”? i never especially liked princessess. either they’re all weak & wimpy & need to be protected from everything, or they’re mean to everyone & get their heads chopped off (ok that’s more like queens but whatever). they aren’t known to have good middos or anything (like strong as a leopard or swift as a deer) or anything. so what’s so good about them that we’re supposed to always remember??

(ok that’s more like queens but whatever)

AOB, you’re getting yourself into big trouble here 😉

As for your question, it’s a good one. I don’t think it’s for the midos/bain adam l’chaveiro aspect but more like my father is the most powerful in all the land, he can do what he wants just for me. One more thing, did you ever see someone of royalty dressed improperly? It’s always in something well tailored (doesn’t look cheap) and with good taste.

also relating to tznius a little bit (I’m not trying to change the topic of this thread, but it fits here) If you would ever look at the arab women (the religious ones, not the ones who are “off”) they are not willing to dress in anything but their shmatas, we have real clothing which is made in very good taste, clothing of our own, why are we constantly looking for the bigger and better of the goyish world? the arab women wouldn’t give it up, so why are we so willing to?

princess123: sorry, i hope you’re not offended, this really isn’t against you. i just wanted to know.

kapusta: ok i get the king thing, thanks.

but it’s not as if they dressed for tsnius, they dressed to impress people. not something i want to emulate.

& what were you trying to say about the arabs? you kinda lost me with all the commas

AOB: It helps women feel important 😉

    ames:

What takes a person further in life, beauty or an amazing personality?

Sadly beauty will get you more out of life, but in the end it wont get you anywhere. (Especially if you lose that beauty, which is a lot easier to lose than a good personality.)
