A while ago I read an article here how El Al might start flying on Shabbos. There was a person who was interviewed who always flies El Al but stated he would cease should El Al start flying on Shabbos. His argument was that he would rather fly with a Goy who flies on Shabbos then a Jew who flies on Shabbos. I was just curious is this halachically correct?

Normally we have a halachah that when buying or selling one should always buy and sell from and to a Jew as opposed to a Goy. I was just wondering why that wouldn’t apply here? Is it because this din doesn’t apply to non-frum Jews (which means there isn’t much of a point to buy Israeli products, other then pumping money into the Israeli economy, because most Israeli companies aren’t frum)? Is it because this is a semi-lifnei iveir problem as our support for El Al may lead to chillul Shabbos? Or is it wrong, and whether El Al flies on Shabbos or not, we should still support a Jewish airline over a Goyish airline?

Some people think you are allowed to fly on shabbos just because it is on a jewish airline.

You are not allowed to fly on shabbos. You just can’t.

If it takes off before and lands after, then maybe you could. I wonder. I assume it would need to be piloted by a goy, or on autopilot.

Since I’m not familiar with the halachic aspect, I will not comment on that. But I want to point out that several Gedolim came out very strictly against ELAL in the past for considering to fly on Shabbos. Which makes me say that I would never fly ELAL if they desecrate Shabbos!

Maybe if ALL yidden flew ELAL they would not be swayed by the pressure!!!! Why is it that we only always look at the flip side. Why do NON-frum Jews always have to accommodate us frumies but WE don’t have to accommodate them? THINK about it.

I know Frum Yidden who would rather fly Jordan-air because its cheaper. What’s the excuse for that?

Because the Torah, which equally applies to use frummies as much as to those non-frummies, says no Jew can violate the sanctity of the Sabbath. At penalty of death.

It also says to support our own. So why support the arabs and goyim because it is cheaper? No one has security as ELAL does and maybe they have to charge more because they are closed when others are open. Why not support that?

RB, being sarcastic and saying “not everyone has money trees all over their lawn” is NOT an excuse. It seems that it is only convenient to be a JEW in certain areas but NOT all. That is just a cop out. IF you are going to spend the money to go to Israel then know how you should spend your money in the most efficient and appropriate way. How come those people without money don’t have to ask a sheilah if they have to support the Jewish airline that the Rabbobim force to be closed on Shabbos? How come the Rabbonim don’t comes straight out and say that everyone should fly ELAL because they are the Jewish airline and they are closed on Shabbos!!!!!

    Popa,

You are wrong about flying on Shabbos.

I once asked my Rav about this. I was flying to Japan and curious if it would be possible (we wouldn’t actually consider doing it, but I thought it was interesting).

He said you have to be on the plane before Shabbos. Once you are on the plane, you are allowed to stay on until the plane lands. You are even allowed to disembark and take your luggage off the plane. Once you get to your destination, you are not allowed to leave the airport until Shabbos is over.

He did say its not hashkafically preferable.

Not every Rav may pasken this way, but its not a “You are NOT allowed to fly on Shabbos” ruling across the board.

    sjs,

maybe your rav paskened like this for you but el al supposedly is a jewish air line so they should be going according to halacha! therefore if they are being machallel shabbos we shouldn’t be supporting them!
