Studies have shown that 90% of statistics are made up.

omg, I never had such a good laugh. Thanks MKY for providing it.

    #658836

Listen you people think i’m making things up. Up in shamayim after 120 they will tell you the truth.

    #658837

    ames same to you

    #658838

obviously you people are telling me that it’s okay for children to have all these gadgets DS, PSP, and all the trash. I”M NOT BEING MESHADECH WITH APIKORSIM

It seems I am having a hard time making myself understood today. I don’t suppose you might see the irony in my quoting a “study” that shows statistical evidence is made up? It was purely meant as a humorous comment. However, now that you bring it up – I do believe with certainty that the figure quoted is completely made up.

And, sir, please watch your language, most certainly when you have no leg to stand on. Calling randomly quoted statistics into question is not lying, most of the time it is the statistic that is a lie.

    #658840

The Torah says “Ushmartem Meod Es Nafshoseichem” Watch your soul very much. Allowing children to play DS and PSP and I-Touch is being over on this issur!! SHOTEH what you people are

I think it’s time to bring this thread back on topic. We are discussing electronic gadgets and if children need them.

I’m wondering, what do you folks think of e-book readers? Good for kids or not?

    #658854

The electronic book readers take all the fun out of curling up with an enjoyable book. And if it’s newspaper reading, the versions for the reader leave a lot to be desired. The only value it may have is if you are doing serious reading, such as textbooks or pdf files for elearning. In that case it would be convenient. JMO.

ames, I agree that both reading & electronic/ computer games have their place, and that important skills can be learned from each. Both have disadvantages in common though, chiefly that they tend to be isolating & sedentary activities. Regarding the first, it’s not difficult to discuss books & electronic games with your kids, and to talk about their opinions & discuss what they’ve learned. As far as the second point, it’s important to balance reading/ electronic games with physical activity.

Don’t you think a child would get excited about reading if he/she is using a Kindle or a Reader Touch?

A child excited about reading a book that he/she cannot chew up, rip, or turn pages back as you read them to him/her? Excited about a book that, if thrown against the wall, ceases to be a book? Where’s the excitement?

Mod 26, I don’t think that an e-book reader is the best way to engage a reluctant reader. In my opinion, a better way would be to find books about his area of interest, appropriate to his reading level, and mention why he might find the book interesting. Sometimes reading a chapter or two aloud can also help.

    #658871

    what is perfectly alright, mepal?

mod, as was mentioned before, e-books are good for school, textbooks, but not for reading altz enjoyement.
