What should the kinderlach call their elter zeida and bubbe’s? Simply Zeidy and Bubby? How will they differentiate between all the Elter Zeidy’s and the regular Zeidy’s?

Also, should the kinderlack refer to the parents siblings as Uncle Shlomo and Aunt Tziporah? Or just by their first names? And what if the uncle and aunt’s are still in their teens or younger?

depends on the size of the gifts you get. the bigger the gift, the more endearing the term.

    no, no, no im kidding.

    Does it really matter?

FWIW, my kids refer to their great-grandmothers as “Grandma” and have no problem differentiating them from their actual grandmothers.

Wolf: When they talk to you about “Grandma”, how do you know which grandma or great-grandma they are speaking of?

    #731119

no one mentions grandma to the wolf anymore, not after that unfortunate incident with the girl in the red hood.

My kids call their great-grandmothers (they should live till 120!!) Bubby ___________(first name).

I think that it’s a tremendous z’chus that have have great-grandmothers. Hitler ym”sh killed my great-grandparents, so I never had the z’chus to meet them.

as the kids get older they will realize the difference. you can ask the great grandparents what they would like the children to call them.

My grandchildren call their Elter Bubbie by the city where she lives- mfor example Bubbie Baltimore, Bubbie Far Rockaway, etcThey actually differentiate between their Bubbies and Zeidies with their own cute “isms” One grandchild calls Bubbie and Other Bubbie- At any given time we can be either one!

Very simple: They are called Grandma (first name) or Bubby (first name). That’s how they all wanted to be called by their grandkids/great-grandkids (and, yes, we asked their input). This goes for all their grandparents, great-grandparents and my stepmother.

So far, everyone has chosen different names so it hasn’t been a problem (my kids have/had an oma and opa, bobbie and z-EYE-dy, nana and zaidy and grandma and grandpa).

In german, Oma gets promoted to Omama. But since my mother didn’t take Oma (she didn’t want to change her mother’s name) she chose a different one.

AH Bubbie, that is so cute. It reminds me of what Queen Elizabeth II called her paternal grandfather when she was a child. Her grandfather was King George V of England.

She would call him Grandfather England. He called her Lillibett.

My youngest aunt is only nine years older than I am. I have always called her “Aunt_____.”* That went for my great-aunts and uncles as well.

Likewise, my kids call their aunts and uncles such (although all their aunts/uncles were already adults or near-adults by the time they were born).

    The Wolf

    * And, yes, we weren’t frum at the time.

Is it inappropriate for children to call their uncles and aunts solely by their first name (similar to how it is inappropriate for children to call their grandparents by their first name)?

My generation called the grandparents Babby ____ and Babby ______ (same went for the one zeidy that we had, even though there was only one zeidy)

My kids simply refer to their grandparents as Babby and Zeidy even though there were sets of both (only a pair and a babby left now).

I’ll insist that my grandchildren (I’H) call me Zeidi ____, as the person I’m named after never lived to hear the name Zeidi from anyone. Its the least I can do for him

I believe it depends on numerous factors, including the relative age difference. I know someone who is older than his uncle by a few months and think it’s perfectly okay that he calls his uncle by his first name alone.

my nieces and nephews call me by my first name doesn’t bother me a bit makes me feel like part of the family, i don’t think my single status has anything to do with what they call me

And because ‘The Wolf’ and ‘Kapusta’ may be the same person, if grandma goes to The Wolf, he really WILL get “stuffed”…

My nieces and nephews all call me by my first name. I always tell them not to call me Aunt ____ . Maybe because all my aunts and uncle were older, I feel like im too young to be called Aunt.

A person has a right to be called as they so choose. And if you are lucky enough to have Great Grandchildren, you should have the zchus of choosing how they should address you.

aries, if your parents insisted your children call them by their first name, would you insist your children call your father Steve?

I grew up that it was respectful that my aunts and uncles are to be called aunt and uncle. as we got older we’ll say their first names but thats a rare thing. That’s how it always was in my family and thats how it will be with my kids iy”h. I myself do not have siblings but my husband does so his siblings will be aunt and uncle. yet, we have friends and since it is not respect for them to call them by their first names they will be known as aunt and uncle(since they are close with us).

It’s all about respect. the problem with first name basis is that you loose the fact that people are older and that you need to have respect for them and not be chummy chummy(if you know what i mean)

All my grandmothers(2) and great-grandmothers(2) are called Bobby ________(last name). My nephew has nine!! grandmothers, great grandmothers, and great-great grandmothers and he still manages to call all of them Bobby___________ without anyone getting confused.

As for my Uncles and Tantas, they are older so we added the title until we were about 13,14 and then dropped it. My nephew calls his uncles and tantas by their first names because most are very young and can be his playmates.

    So?

Sometimes when talking about my mother or mother-in-law, they’ll say “Bubby_____,” but sometimes they’ll just say “Bubby.” Nonetheless, we figure out who they’re talking about.

    The Wolf

Cute story: We were spending Shabbos by my mother’s house when my oldest was very young (probably about two or three at the time). He was playing with my mother when there was a knock at the door. Naturally he ran to the other and when we opened it, it was my mother-in-law, who came over to visit.

Squealing with joy, he exclaimed “More Bubby!!!!” 🙂

I know a family that calls their grandparents by the names of their kids. For ex: Nechama Bobby or Gedalya Bobby while really these are the names of their single aunts and uncles.

Little red riding hood by YWN poster names:

There was a once a HELPFUL BASMELECH called red riding hood. One day her MOTHER IN ISRAEL told her that her FLATBUSH BUBBIE was not in best HEALTH and was in BED-STUY getting some MNUCHA so she should POPPA over to see her cos she was BORED STIFF.

Walking thru the woods she met a predator who had WOLFISH MUSINGS about eating her.

When she knocked at the door, the WOLF replied HELLO. But TRUTH BE TOLD she had a lot of COMMON SENSE so she realised something was wrong.

‘Are you AT HOME BUBBIE’ she called. ‘OF COURSE’ replied the WOLF, ‘I’m ALWAYS HERE, come in & dont worry, I’m NEVER CAUSTIC’!

But although the wolf put on a SMILE E. FACE, she wasnt fooled cos she was a SMARTCOOKIE.

‘Are you really Grandma?’ she said. DUNNO said the wolf. Who else could I be? I’m not like JOSEPH, an ECLIPSE with hundreds of names you know!

So she thought FEIF UN, I’ll go and check. KEN ZAYN its her. All should be ok cos HASHEM LOVES ME.

Grandma, such big teeth you have she said. OOO-MISS said the wolf its MAMASHTAKAH azoi. You’re stating THE OBVIOUS. Come here and I’ll eat you! So she ran straight home DERECH HAMELECH and lived happily ever after.
