everyone should call ez pass and sign up for carpool status. those who have 3 or more people in their vehicle can get major discounts if they go to the cash/ez pass lane and tell the worker that they are carpool members. the $12 toll at the gw bridge goes down to $3.50.

call them and ask. there is no fee to join.

You can get the carpool discount even with two people by simple telling the toll booth clerk “carpool”, as you go through the manned lane. Works almost every time.

Wait though when I go through ez pass, it’s automatic there is no one actually swiping my ez pass.

And it’s not about beating the system. Tolls ate outrageously expensive and a lot of the money goes to funding projects that have nothing to do with the mta. I worked over a bridge this year and spent hundreds every month, and the tolls for the bridge went up after I took the job. Now I usually do have 3 people in my car, why not use this benefit?

This is only if you have 3 or more people and you have to take the “Cash EZPass” lane so the toll collector can verify the number of occupants.

    #890208

Saying “carpool” to the toll collector when one isn’t truly eligible for it seems to be a problem for the following reasons:

    1) Sheker

    2) Genaiva

    3) Chilul H-shem (if caught)

If my concerns aren’t valid, I’d appreciate it if someone could point out why.

I don’t want to embarass the poster who suggested this – if I’m correct and this is a problem, perhaps that post can be removed.

ICOT some carpools are 2+ so you get the discount if you have 2 people in the car. We try to be honest and are unsure if it is two or more, so we ask the toll attendant and we have gotten it with 2 people in the car.

whiteberry, nothing i wrote is beating the system. when i go to that lane there are 3 people in my vehicle. i am following their guidelines. everyone who can, should try to do it. if you go to and from the country for 10 weeks you can save 85 dollars from this alone. nice few dollars to use toward the cost of gas.

those who have family in jersey or monsey can do this year-round

With two people in the car you have a carpool, linguistically speaking. The technical requirements for meeting the program eligibility is the responsibility of the toll collector to verify, not the driver who isn’t required to know (and who may not know) what they are.

ICOT-as I said multiple times. I ONLY do this when there are 3 people in the car. Why is this sheker, geneva or chilul Hashem?

I was also addressing one specific post. I even thought it was self evident. I guess it wasn’t so obvious.

I will be clearer, yes the toll booth attendant should be more attentive to the number of occupants in the car. Midvar sheker tirchak however is incumbent on the one driving the car, not the attendant in the toll booth.

for the record, at no time did i suggest saying ”carpool” to the attendant without having 3 ppl in the vehicle.

I tried this by the outerbridge tolls I had over 3 people in car and asked for the carpool discount. I just got my EZpass statement and was NOT given the discount, I was charged $9.60. I think you need to call first(which I did not do).

If you went through the lane with a toll collector and you didn’t get the EZPass Carpool discount, call EZPass customer service and they will refund you to the carpool rate.

I got upset at somebody for saying carpool with only two people in the car, because of geneiva. However said person sometimes doesn’t use the cash/ezpass lane due to traffic or forgetfulness (with 3 plus people in the car) and this is a more common scenario than saying it when it’s not so.

I guess the real issue is lying then, for someone like this, or are we not allowed to “take back” what’s due to us without permission?

Also, can somebody explain to me why they don’t automatically enroll everybody in the carpool plan when they sign up for ezpass? Many people lose a lot of money because they are not aware or forget etc., are they (our friendly tollboth owners) not gaming us? I know we must have higher standards, just venting.

mazal, if you note my original post it states to call ez pass and sign up. that is the first step.

mammele, most places do not sign people up for discounts. the person needs to go after it themselves in order to get it. just like using coupons or aarp discounts, it is up to you to get them and use them.

“said person sometimes doesn’t use the cash/ezpass lane due to traffic or forgetfulness (with 3 plus people in the car)”

Whether due to traffic or forgetfulness, there is no excuse to lie the next time to “make up” for it.

Does this work at every ez pass toll or just when travelling between NJ and NY? Also, what about between NJ and PA or between NY and CT?

hakohen: This applies only to the NJ – to – NY crossings.

I went from NJ to Monsey today and didn’t know I had the option of telling anyone. I should pay more attention next time. Do you think it’s too late to call them and tell them I had a carpool but forgot to say so?

Syag: You need to signup for the discount on your EZPass account (its a free enrollment) before you can use it. Once you are signed up, you need to go through the lanes with a toll collector (not the EZPass Only lanes that you zip through) and tell the toll collector “carpool” (if you have 3 or more people in the car.)

choppy – Thank you. Since my EZpass is really an IPass it probably doesn’t qualify for any sign-up.

you only get the discount if

-you have already called ez pass and joined the carpool program

-you go to a lane marked cash/ezpass

-you have 3 or more people in your car

    – you tell lthe attendant you are a carpool member

    – you are going thru a toll from a participating bridge/tunnel

not all bridges and tunnels are part of the program

ALL New Jersey to New York crossings are part of the program. And only New Jersey to New York crossings are part of the program.

Carpool PlanCarpooling is both eco-conscious and the most economical way to travel.

The Port Authority Carpool Plan provides the largest toll discount at the Port Authority bridges and tunnels. By carpooling, you save the most money and reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

The toll for Port Authority Carpool customers is $3.50 per vehicle at all hours.

You must have an E-ZPass account and you must register for the Port Authority Carpool Discount Plan.

To register for the Carpool Plan, call 800-333-8655 (New York Service Center) or 888-288-6865 (New Jersey Service Center). Be sure to have your account number or tag number and PIN for account access.

Three or more people must be in a vehicle to be eligible for the discount (no commercial vehicles qualify).

Customers must use a staffed “Cash-E-ZPass” toll lane and come to a complete stop so the toll collector can verify the number of occupants in the vehicle.
