How many lies did he tell about his personal history to get elected?
How many lies is a candidate allowed before their party disowns them?

i dont think the voters cared whether or not he was Jewish they didnt want Zimmerman, his opponent and they wanted a Republican. I wish Democrats (and Republicans) just learned for once to respect the outcome of an election instead of trying to get losses overturned.

    besalel,

Nobody says that Zimmerman should be declared the winner.
That the loser gets to be declared the winner is only for deranged Trump and his band of anarchists in the Republican party like Kari Lake in Arizona.

But that there should be zero consequences from Santos’s party for the amount of lying that he did ?

jackk: the democrats have been calling for santos to resign which will allow the democrat governor to put in a replacement which will probably be zimmerman. sorry but democrats are trying to overturn an election.

Lying (aka exaggeration, shading facts, omitting material informaiton etc) to get elected is a time honored tradition for political hacks on BOTH sides of the aisle. Santos seems to be more guilty of stupidity by lying about such easily checked facts. Zimmerman’s campaign was even more inept by NOT fact-checking during the campaign. In any event, he should be seated in Congress and its not even a close call.

However, Santos’ may be at greater risk if it turns out he lied about the sources of funds used for his campaign. It now appears some of those “family business” sources don’t exist. Even worse was lying about his grandparents escaping to Brazil from the Nazis when it appears they were born in Brazil. Now the Jewish Republicans who adopted him are having second thoughts.

    besalel,

“When vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies.”
    — U.S. Constitution, Article I, section 2, clause 4

If he resigns , then as is the law by all vacancies in congress due to death, resignation, declination, withdrawal, or House action, the Constitution requires that they be filled by election.

Nobody gets to appoint the loser as a permanent replacement.

If we banned liars from holding office, they would have trouble finding enough candidates, Congress would lack a quorum, and the work of government would grind to a halt.

It doesn’t appear that any of his lies render him ineligible to hold office (e.g. lying about citizenship or residence, such as if he really is an illegal alien living in New Jersey). If he does a good job in Congress, the people who voted for him may be very forgiving; America has a long tradition of looking at one’s accomplishments rather than getting hung up over the past.

Politicians lie all the time. Democrat Senator Dick Blumenthal in CT lied about serving in Vietnam and he keeps getting reelected. He was elected because the voters didn’t want a Democrat. Let them decide whether he deserves an extra term.

Bill Clinton set the record for a lying politician. He was disbarred while in office, in addition to having been impeached for perjury.

He claims when he said he was Jewish, he meant jew-ish.

I can’t believe the Republicans have found someone dumber than MTG and Boboert.

“Bill Clinton set the record for a lying politician…”

Actually untrue. Another former occupant of the Oval Office clearly holds the record (under any possible metric) but WJC made the mistake of doing so under oath.

Jackk: You underestimate the depth of their bench….lots of options to choose from.
In fairness, the Republican Jewish Coalition showed a lot more backbone than other Republican leadership. They just issued a statement castigating his claims to “Jewish” ancestry and said he would be thrown out if he showed up at any future RJC event.

We can’t complain about anti-semitism much if politicians are lying that they are Jewish … So, we don’t need to worry about Cohens pretending to be Joneses, but rather Joneses, or least Santi, pretending to be Cohens.

On a political and moral level I would place him along AOC because they both campaigned on similar lies pertaining to their background but not necessarily their policies. AOC campaigned on being “the girl the Bronx” when she really grew up in the suburbs (to escape the policies she tries to implement)

On a political and moral level I would also place him as high above Joe Biden whose entire essence of his campaign and self description was deception about who he is and how he would govern. Biden claimed to be a “moderate, a consensus builder who leans across the aisle who will restore civility to American politics and honesty and integrity back to the Oval Office”

And of course Biden also told the same type of lies about his background and experience. He claimed his house was destroyed in a fire, that he was a civil rights activist who was repeatedly arrested (noting to be proud of) that he was an award-winning student who earned three degrees and many many other lies

had to go and contaminate the republican party. (His win is a loss for the republicans, not a win. Attn dovrosenbaum.)
hopefully “republican” will soon also be found to be a lie.

UJM: Actually, was a history major as an undergrad but political pritzus is subjective. This guy didn’t bother with the usual “shading” or “puffery” but simply invents a new persona almost daily. As I’ve posted previously, the real crime here was on the Democratic side for not surfacing these issues before election day, even after a local county newspaper had already flagged many of the lies and contradictions. Political malpractice beyond belief and they deserved to lose

    GH,

Is it possible that they did do their research and this is what they wanted to happen so it would be eggs on the faces of the GOP (like it is now)?

Current List of George Santos’ lies, deceptions and fabrications.

    His religion

On his campaign websites, Santos noted that his “grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII.” His biography on his campaign website has since been changed.

Santos described himself as “a proud American Jew” in documents to pro-Israel groups. But six weeks after he was elected to office, he admitted to misleading voters about his cultural and religious background. Santos told The New York Post during a Dec. 26 interview that he “never claimed to be Jewish,” only “Jew-ish.” He said his grandmother told him she was Jewish but had converted to Catholicism.

The Forward looked into ancestral records, and found evidence that Santos’ maternal grandparents were born in Brazil before the Nazis rose to power in Europe.

    His education

Santos told the Post during the Dec. 26 interview that he never graduated from college, retracting previous statements claiming that he received a degree in economics and finance from CUNY’s Baruch College in 2010.

When he ran for Congress in 2019, Santos claimed on his campaign website that he graduated from the prestigious Horace Mann School in the Bronx. Ed Adler, a spokesman for the school, said officials there “checked all the records and all the aliases. He (Santos) did not attend Horace Mann.”

    His work experience

On the campaign trail, Santos billed himself as a “seasoned Wall Street financier and investor” and claimed he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. But during the Post interview, the soon-to-be-lawmaker clarified that he “never worked directly” with either of the financial institutions.

Around the same time Santos claimed that he was working his way through the financial sector, a Times investigation shows that he was a customer service agent at a Dish Network call center in Queens.

    His real estate portfolio

Santos tweeted in February 2021 that he owned 13 rental properties where tenants had not paid rent for a year. “We worked hard to acquire these assets. Now it almost feels like we are being punished,” he wrote. But in the Post interview he admitted he does not own any real estate and lives at his sister Tiffany’s home in Huntington.

Santos’ tweet railing against his fictitious tenants came four years after he was evicted for at least the third time in Queens, according to housing records surfaced by The New York Times.

In court eviction records, he claimed to have been mugged in 2016 on his way to pay $2,250 in back rent on his Queens apartment. The NYPD says it has no record of the attack.

    His mother’s death

As of at least October, Santos’ campaign website stated that his mother, Fatima Devolder, was “in her office in the south tower” of the World Trade Center on the day of the 9/11 attacks. The website stated “she survived the horrific events of that day, but unfortunately passed away a few years later.” An online obituary shows Santos’ mother passed away more than 15 years after 9/11, in December 2016.

    His Health History

In a March 2020 video episode of the Empire State Conservatives Podcast — which has since been made private on YouTube — Santos tells the hosts that he “battled a brain tumor a couple of years ago.”

“I had radiation done, which really, really lowers your immunity in general,” Santos said, recounting his experience with COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic.

Santos’ campaign did not respond to questions about when he was diagnosed, what treatment he received and where.

    His Charity

The political newcomer claimed not only to be an ex-banker but also a lover of animals: Mr Santos previously claimed to have founded a charity group called Friends of Pets United, taking credit for supposedly saving thousands of dogs and cats. But no IRS records of the group could be found, and Mr Santos himself even backed away from the claim that he founded the group, later telling reporters that he only campaigned for the group and tried to find foster homes for some animals.

I think YWN also ran a halachic discussion about this. I understood this as: lying is forbidden to non-Jews and while you can acknowledge this guy and rely on his vote, you should try to find other partners when looking for political allies.

On the positive side, this guy may have a been a Berdichever chosid: look, how openly he admits all his aveiros. On the negative side, this seems to be part of the modern trend when all aveiros are not just tolerated in private or overlooked with understanding that “everyone is human”, but proudly paraded in front of the public.

Not only Dems, but Reps should have found this during the primary. American system rightfully does not criminalize such behavior but presumes that open public discourse will deal with such cases. If this is a one-off miss that will warn people that is fine, but not if the next guy will point to this one as a precedent.

I can’t think of anything remotely similar. It is quite a reveal of our national stupidity that this is being looked at as a partisan story.

Yes, there are lots of liars in politics, but the key question for all of us us now is what we should do about the leading liar recently elected to the 118th Congress. His lies vastly outnumber the truths he has told. I say, throw him out.

On Wednesday, at a press conference in New York, Santos was condemned by the chair of the Nassau County Republican Party, the Nassau county executive, and Anthony D’Esposito, the newly elected GOP Congress member from a neighboring district — they all demanded that Santos resign. This was followed by the New York Conservative Party demanding that Santos resign in a press release that described him as morally disqualified from serving in public office.

There is new information with pictures showing that he was a drag queen in Brazilian beauty pageants 15 years ago.
A perfect fit for the Republican’s.
