September 1, 2011 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #805095TheGoqParticipantHow about a honey dish for Rosh Hashana?
September 1, 2011 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #805096CheinMemberA candle platter is good.
September 1, 2011 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #805097Mayan_DvashParticipantThis time do a candy platter. Over Shabbos, take note of things that they may like, for example I found out that my inlaws like the “Bartenura Blue Bottle” of wine, so the next time I came, that’s what I brought.

September 1, 2011 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #805098cshapiroMemberthanks mayan….i was thinking that as i was shopping yesterday that i wish i paid more attention to what they like….
September 1, 2011 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #805099deiyezoogerMemberBring a fancy chocolate plater, not to expensive and always apriciative.
September 1, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #805100WIYMemberCshapiro
Why don’t you ask your chosson?
September 1, 2011 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #805101babygooseParticipanti bought a dish that made a statement and sent homemade apple turnovers. they loved it
September 1, 2011 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #805102deiyezoogerMemberAlso instead of a present you may want to cook or bake somthing for shabbos.
September 1, 2011 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #805103amichaiParticipantmazel tov! chocolates are always nice , or a very nice wine. don’t be nervous!!
September 1, 2011 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #805104WIYMemberBabygoose
Very classy. I like that idea of bringing something you baked. It also shows the family that you are a balabusta lol.
September 1, 2011 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #805105koillel101Memberbring a nice bootle of wine and a crystal/silver wine bottle in an arrangement. its useful and looks gorgeous(if its done right!) I know my mother loved it when my sister-in-law sent this.
September 1, 2011 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #805106popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t think you should bring a gift when going to your future in-laws for shabbos. You are not a guest, you are family.
You don’t bring your parents a candy dish when you come for shabbos.
If you really feel you must bring something- homemade cookies.

September 1, 2011 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #805108YW Moderator-80Memberbring a nice bootle of wine
its not really appropriate to bring wine in a small boot. leave it in its original bottle and the hosts can transfer it into a boot of their choosing. (although i never heard of this custom, and it doesnt sound very appetizing)
September 1, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #805109apushatayidParticipant“i bought a dish that made a statement”
What did it say?
September 1, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #805110YW Moderator-80Memberpopa
“future” in-laws is a very different relationship than in-laws
September 1, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #805111popa_bar_abbaParticipantStill, I don’t think you should bring anything. They want to relate to you as family. You don’t bring a gift when you visit family.
September 1, 2011 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #805112YW Moderator-80Memberi think they expect you to bring something, you family doesnt.
however, if you dont bring something and explain you “really wanted to bring something but family doesnt bring gifts when they visit family and were almost family”
that might work
or
they might think you are really cheap and a smooth talker as well
September 1, 2011 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #805113adorableParticipant80- i think thats more like it! you have to bring something. most ppl I know bring a nice glass plate or jar and they bake something and fill it. either like cinnamon buns or a cake of some sort thats nice and tasty and homey
September 1, 2011 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #805114cshapiroMemberI love the homemade idea….but idk how to cook or bake…

Your mother can help you, I’m sure she will keep it a secret…
September 1, 2011 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #805116maskingtapeMemberBabygoose, what does lqtm mean? I noticed you used it a number of times in your posts.

Yes, you do. Even when I go to my own mother I bring flowers + some food, aldough noting fancy but it takes off some of her workload.
September 1, 2011 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #805118YW Moderator-80Memberlaughing quietly to myself
it is a truthful answer to rotfl and lol ,since no one actually is rolling on the floor, and they very likely arent even laughing out loud.
September 1, 2011 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #805119always hereParticipantI also think something for the upcoming Yontif- a unique honey dish or a pretty hand-painted plate to serve apples, or a nice fish platter (pewter?)… if not, then a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
September 1, 2011 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #805120deiyezoogerMemberIn any case don’t post your final idea since your future in laws might be closet CR members.
September 1, 2011 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #805121EnderParticipantMaskingtape, LQTM: Laughing quietly to myself.
My wife made cinnamon buns when she came to my house for the first time for shabbos. They were great, my parents thought it was the perfect thing to bring.
September 1, 2011 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #805122deiyezoogerMemberIf they love you, they will love whatever you bring.
September 1, 2011 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #805123600 Kilo BearMemberA jug of Drano, or muriatic acid if you’re going to have milchigs :).
September 1, 2011 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #805124deiyezoogerMemberOh! Kilobear she is not yet a doughter in law…
September 1, 2011 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #805125shprintzeMemberthe first shabbos i went to future inlaws i brought them the first batch of challah i ever made. they weren’t perfect but my inlaws (and chosson) loved it. another week, after i got pictures from my vort i brought them a silver frame with a great picture of me and chosson. they still have it displayed in their dining room.
September 1, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #805126ronrsrMemberEggs from your chickens or vegetables from your garden. I always bring that, and folks are always delighted.
September 1, 2011 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #805127deiyezoogerMemberIts not what you bring, its who brings it, since hopefully they love you I’m sure that whatever you bring will be valued.
September 1, 2011 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #805128popa_bar_abbaParticipantI usually bring chickens from my eggs.

Be sure Chap-a-Nosh and Schnitzi are in your speed dial
September 1, 2011 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #805132deiyezoogerMemberIf there are food left over its because you didn’t like it. You might as well leave it there.

September 1, 2011 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #805135elikParticipantYES I do my something when I g to my mother for shabbos
September 2, 2011 1:10 am at 1:10 am #805136aries2756ParticipantKallah, yes you have good instincts and you are on the right track. It would be appropriate for you to bring something. The suggestion that you bring pictures in a nice album or a nice picture of you and the chasson in a very nice frame if you haven’t done that already is probably the best idea.
The next to the best idea is to bake chocolate chip cookies (who doesn’t like them), which are the easiest cookies to bake and bring them on a very nice platter that they would be very proud to use again.
Those are the two simplest and least awkward things to do. The next in line is flowers, but that is something that is not so special because your father-in-law might get his wife flowers on a regular basis.
My daughter-in-law came with a cookie jar filled with home made chocolate chip cookies the day she came to meet us. That was an unusual move and totally not necessary but very impressive and thoughtful.
Keep it small and thoughtful.
September 2, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #805137cshapiroMemberThanks aries, but I actually gave them an album with vort pics as well as a 8X10 frame with a family pic (and frames for both babbis)….i ended up baking brownies and blondies…he has little siblings so i hope they enjoy it!!!
I feel bad because i know his dad is not supposed to have sugar…should i make something else thats sugar free??
September 2, 2011 11:59 am at 11:59 am #805138mommamia22ParticipantI would have suggested a netilas yadayim towel or pot holders. In truth, anything you bring shows thoughtfulness.
I’d suggest bringing sugar free rugelach (bakery) for his dad. It shows you went the extra mile and were really thoughtful.
I know you’re nervous, but you’re going to have a great time, IY’H!
September 2, 2011 1:14 pm at 1:14 pm #805139600 Kilo BearMemberSeriously, if anyone in the house has a particular interest, get them something they can use. I’d be much more impressed with a Vise-Grip than another bottle of wine for Shabbos myself (besides, anyone who knows me knows you need a vise-grip to open any soda bottle cap I close so it isn’t even muktze on my Shabbos table!) :)). Everyone nowadays has enough mashke and wine in the house.
Baking yourself is another good idea, especially if you’re in a small community or a world where everyone goes to the same bakery anyway and you can assume that your in-laws have tasted what you would buy for them there.
Music albums are always a good gift for teenagers.
September 2, 2011 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #805140popa_bar_abbaParticipant(besides, anyone who knows me knows you need a vise-grip to open any soda bottle cap I close so it isn’t even muktze on my Shabbos table!) :))
Why, do you shmear grease all over it?
September 2, 2011 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #805141miritchkaMember@PBA – i always bring something to my in laws or parents to show my gratitude. Even though parents and in laws want you to come and shep lotsa nachas and look at it as special to have you (at least mine do) I feel that its alot of work to invite a whole family for a shabbos. usually i bake a desert or make a kugel or i give an updated picture in a frame.
September 2, 2011 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #805142always hereParticipantyes, bring something sugar-free for the Tatta… it’s thoughtful.
September 2, 2011 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #805143cshapiroMemberthanks mommamia22, i was too nervous to bake anything sugar free in case it would come out awful but ill def stop by the bakery on the way home and get something sugar free….is it weird tho? will it be singling out my fil?
