Where is a mekor to not read goyish books on Shabbos ?

(those who do read them please do not post! this is not meant to be a debate)

It is that they are “muktza” due to being “Shtarei Hedyotos”. (Not really Muktza, but subject to that Issur)

Similar to any paper with ads in it, which is actually worse. Shelas Shalom (such as your novel, assuming that is what one holds) is only a Gezairah for real shtarei hedyotos.

(Which is why there has been a movement to add to them “please do not read on shabbos”, as I have seen a number of times).

The exception for jewish novels is possibly due to them having the halachic status of a sefer, due to their mussar message.

See SA OHC 307:13 for more info.

I’ve heard that shtorey hedyotos only applies to reading a LETTER for the 2ND time (cos there’s no reason to read it more than once) but this does not apply to books

    Anything else perhaps?

See also the Beis Yosef as to what is called “shturei hedyoitois”, there are many different opinions in the rishonim and is not a clear cut black & white ishue.

I’m not sure what this has to do with anything. It’s entirely possible for one to learn Torah AND read secular books on Shabbos.

I don’t think anyone maintains that one must read *exclusively* secular books on Shabbos.

Also, if I may offer a suggestion… next time please choose a thread title that is more informative of the thread contents. 🙂

“Wolfishmusings don’t underestimate yourself apparently you do the leyning Friday nights no?”

I once dated someone who was the Baal Koreh in his shul and then he opened up to me on one date and told me he is Mechallel Shabbos (on purpose) many Shabbosim.

So, being that you Lain, doesnt make you a good Jew.

(I am not implying anything about Wolf)

So, being that you Lain, doesnt make you a good Jew.

I never said that it did.

Let’s back this up a bit before this turns into a train-wreck.

Blueprints asked a question and asked people who read secular books on Shabbos not to post.

Strictly as a joke (and to be a troublemaker 🙂 ) I posted anyway.

BP then implied (from my understanding of the post) that I was eligilbe since I lain.

My counter to that (although not stated clearly) is that if that’s the case, then no one’s ineligible because no one has a policy of reading ONLY secular books on Shabbos.

Now that that’s settled, let’s get back to the OP’s question…

(Boy, one wisecracking throw-away joke and it turns into a whole rigamarole… 🙂 )

“I never said that it did.”

I never said that you said that it did.

I was going on the words “dont underestimate yourself”, and was pointing something out.

And, if you notice at the end of my post the parenthesis.

he never said that you said that he said that it did.

    Disclosure:

I also read secular books on Shabbos.

I am also makpid to study secular topics of no use on shabbos (see OHC 308:50), but not those of use after shabbos, since that would be Hachana.

(My post was that I put myself in a mindset of not reading secular books on shabbos, Al PI R’ Shimon).

    Sacrilege-

wow! That is a really strange story!

I cannot imagine why someone who leins and spends time poring over the torah, would willingly be mechalel shabbos!

lucky that he chose to tell this to you beforehand…

Wolfishmusings I was trying to praise you that you may be reading goyishe books on Shabbos but you’re still busy with the leyning on Friday night which is more than most of us can say

(hm? Is a title which catches everyones eye!)

ANYWAY: can we get back to the question at hand or must I restart this thread!!!!

pumper dont you think that before calling someone a mechaleil shabboss you should at least look up the halacha? please see Bies Yosef that since many rishoinim allow it we cannot stop someone from doing so.

” learning tanach leads to apikorsus.”

C”V, the reason it was ignored was because the maskilim made a big deal of dikduk which in order to learn that you needed to be fluent in Tenach.

    deiyezooger-

for clarification purposes: I was commenting on something that Sacrilege posted about someone she dated who leined and was mechalel shabbos.

I was not saying that someone who read secular books is mechalel shabbos! (if I did then I would be guilty of it as well)

BTW- when I was in seminary I went to someone for shabbos who did not read anything at all on shabbos besides for divrei torah and the like. Forget about secular- they wouldn’t even read a birthday card that was sent to one of the kids. (true story)

Pumper I’m sorry I tought you are talking about wolf since he always says he prepares for leining on friday night. As to reading a birthday card, its not just a frumkeit, according to many rishonim greating cards are assur to read on shabboss and is even muktzah. Again there are many rishonim who disagree on that topic so as always ask your LOR.
