    That’s right. IQ.

Now that the other predictable thread is under way (this is my first time I glanced at it), it got me wondering what exactly an IQ test shows. What part of general intelligence? Is there a real general all-encompasing test that can probe all different parts of the human intellect?

To be able to quickly access and evaluate different parts of memory, triggered by different causes; to grasp different types of concepts; to solve them; intuitive logic. I’m not sure I’ve seen these very well quantified.

How can IQ tests tell you anything? The biggest genius in the world can be living in Africa in the jungles, cannot speak or read, yet is a major philosopher and thinker. An IQ test will baffle him, although he could kick in Einstein!!!

Most IQ tests are fakes. I got one where they ask you thirty questions like 24 H in a D, where you have to say 24 Hours in a Day. Officially, whoever scores 24+ is a genius. I am not a ‘genius’ yet i got 29 of them. It is general knowledge – a friend of mine is a genius when it comes to Maths, yet he looked at this and didn’t get 7 W of the W. That doesn’t show anything about your intellect!

While there is no “real” test to evaluate and rate the “totality” of the mind’s capabilities. IQ tests seem to be a valid and reliable indicator of the mind’s ability to comprehend and synthesis and apply information/skill to tasks within a “general” knowledge base.

IQ tests ARE culturally and socio-economically biased because a certain set of knowledge is assumed to have been acquired in order to be able to take the test. If that foundation is not there, it is difficult to assess how proficient the mind is capable of functioning.

Also, being that tests are stressful, people are being timed, the state of mind of the test taker, usually means people score lower than what they really possess in terms of IQ.

As you know, there is a good argument that self-esteem, perseverance, etc., are greater indicators in terms of predicting success and the ability of the mind to function on an optimum level.

    ok yekke, here’s a riddle

a man with 3 sons dies. in his will, he leaves 17 horses to be divided between them. to the oldest, he leaves 1/2 the horses, to the second son 1/3 of the horses and to the youngest, 1/9th of the horses. no horses may be cut or sold. how are the horses divided up

Hi – just noticed the riddle, yentingyenta. Is the answer something mathematic, something ridiculous that will find a way around the question without answering it, or something logical, like each person adds a certain number of horses onto the lot and then divide it???

    #884772
    yentingyenta
    Participant

one hint: the man who died has a neighbor with one horse

    #884773
    Chortkov
    Participant

    Simple. Borrow the neighbors horse, to make 18. 18/2 = 9; 18/3 = 6; 18/9 = 2. 2+9+6 = 17. Give the guy one back.

Problem is – you didn’t divide 17 horses and give a 1/2 to the oldest, nor a third to the second, nor a ninth to the third. You gave a fraction of 18!!!

thats the one problem with the riddle that ALL ppl seem to have. the riddle is just supposed to make you think outside the box, not really make sense.

Yentingyenta: Here’s one for you then [which isn’t a riddle…]

There was a very lazy, rich man who paid his servants to carry him around wherever he went. When he needed to use the bath, his servants would place him inside, and close the door, locking it from the outside. He would shout ‘HOT’ and they would pour hot water down a tube until he shouted ‘COLD’ or ‘OFF’. One day, he lost his voice. He shouted ‘HOT’, and they began pumping hot water through. To his horror, when he shouted ‘OFF’, they couldn’t hear him over the sound of the water. So water was coming in still.

The room was so small it had exactly enough room for the bath on all sides, and the door opened outwardly to let him out. There was no way of getting out. The water was rising in the tiny room, and eventually he would drown.

WHAT SHOULD HE DO TO SAVE HIMSELF?

Country A and Country B were at war together. The ONLY way to get from one country to another was by crossing the bridge, which was manned by armed guards. Anybody caught trying to cross would be sent back to his own country.

It takes ten minutes to cross the bridge. Every fifteen minutes, the guards would enter a tent to eat/drink for two minutes. Mr X needs to cross the bridge. How should he do so? [Without swimming/parachuting or crossing any other way; without turning invisible and without using a Disillusionment Charm]

    bang on the door. duh

break the guards’ clock during the 15 mins and when they go in for the 2 min break, they will lose track of time and you can safely cross over

Hey! you forgot my favorite one!

    200 D for PG in the G of M

Now can anyone figure that one out???

    #884780
    HaLeiVi

For the bath, he should allow the water to fall on him, which will quiet the sound. Then he can call, “OFF”.

For the bridge, he can do something similar to what Rebbe Yehoshua Ben Karcha did. You go on to the bridge while they are inside. Before they come out you turn around and head back. They will think you came from the opposite direction and put you there.

That $200 for Passing Go in the G of M is not that hard after all. The sentence structure gave it away.

Haleivi – The bridge answer was correct. As for the bathtub, how about he PULLS OUT THE PLUG????

    #884782
    yentingyenta
    Participant

yekke, but then he’s still stuck in the bathtub. hows he supposed to get out even if he’s not drowning?

    #884783
    Chortkov
    Participant

    yenitngyenta:

    1) He can knock on the door. He cannot if the water is going to ruin the entire room outside; once the plug is out he can bang on the door so that the guys will hear him.

    2) The servants will come in after some time like they usually do, especially if they don’t hear anything from him. Not if he drowns, they won’t.

    3) Thirdly, even if he cannot get out – at least it answers the question, unlike the horses one where you need to solve the problem without answering the question!!
