Our family once considered buying a particular piece of furniture, we knew exectly what we wanted but the cost was realy prohibetive, so we ended up buying second hand in excelent condition for a fraction of the retail price, and we are enjoing it ever since. Why are most people reluctent to buy second hand.

Perhaps people are not comfortable with 2nd hand, because they are uncomfortable thinking of all the places the first hand may have been.

Kings and queens never buy new furniture. Only used antiques.

Maybe because of the condition, or maybe because of the germs it may have.

I think buying within your means is FIRST CLASS!!!

If it’s something like a bookcase or table, then germs aren’t really an issue. Also don’t have to worry about bringing in bedbugs.

All our furniture is secondhand. We’ve never bought anything new. You’d never guess by looking though. We only buy things in excellent condition and they always get a thorough cleaning before use. Saves us a pretty penny.

why give so much weight to what others think? you do what works for you.

better to buy somethng you can afford then go into debt for it.

many times you can get a great buy going 2nd hand or antiquing

Bedbugs are a concern with any used furniture.

Bedroom furniture is more likely to have bedbugs, but living room, dining room and kitchen furniture can also be infested.

This is true for cushions, frames, shelves, chairs, picture frames, etc.

Wood furniture is especially problematic, as it’s likely to have nooks and crannies where bedbugs can hide and/or lay their eggs.

Most of our furniture is second hand. Saves a lot of money and most of it is in an excellent condition. Things that are in a less perfect condition but still decent and therefore cheap, can be used in a study room or guest room.

In the area I live I didnt yet heard of anybody having a problem with bed bugs. (I know that in NYC its reacently a big problem).

If the furniture is in good condition, what’s the matter. About bedbugs…they were recently found in new matteresses from a famous brand. Before moving we gave away lots of furniture in good use…the people called to thank us and to ask us to let us know when we are ready to give the rest away. The matteresses were old and we recommended that they get their own.

Buying quality antique or older furniture is first class. Anything made pre 1960 is real wood, not particle board stapled together. Solid wood furniture should last a lifetime or longer. Stay away from upholstered furniture unless your’re going to reupholster it.

As other have said, buying within your budget is absolutely first class. The only thing I would avoid is upholstered furniture unless it goes directly from the seller to an upholsterer before it comes into your home. Most of my furniture is second hand because I like antiques. A lot of it came from family members, but some of it was purchased from ads in the paper. Most of the furniture manufactured today is of far inferior quality than older furniture is – unless you are prepared to have, for example a sofa, custom made which would cost you a pretty penny. When my kids wanted to buy a good bedroom suite, the bought it second hand and just purchased a new mattress and boxspring. The set they bought would retail in the 15 – 20,000 range today, and they paid 1500 for it. Believe me, they did their homework before they got the bedroom set.
