My daughter is fast approaching Kindergaten, and I was having a hard time compiling information about Brooklyn yeshivahs. If anyone has information on local elementary schools, or is happy with the schools their kids attend, please help us out!

What are you looking for in a school, Mommy? What specific educational goals do you have in mind for your daughter?

Prospect Park is academically oriented both in lemudei kodesh and lemudei chol. They have pre-1a (maybe pre-k – I don’t know) thru high school and beyond (seminary). The curriculum is demanding, especially in high school but the school is very accomodating for girls who need a modified curriculum.

Bais Yakov D’Rav Meir has a similar academic reputation.

Ideally, a co-ed Modern Orthodox school with a large percentage of Ashkenazim. I went to Yeshivah of Flatbush for elementary and high school. Although the workload was extremely demanding, I enjoyed my experiences there. Tuition costs are increasing every September, and I’m told more and more Ashkenazi families are moving to Long Island. Not many co-ed yeshivahs left, with a large portion of Ashkenazi students.

Wolf, any idea why the “i” tag doesn’t work? What tags do work here?

All the coed schools I know of in Brooklyn are mostly sephardic.

Are you willing to send your kids to Manhattan? Ramaz is an excellent school education wise.

Let’s try them all out, since I have no idea what most do:

    this is a

    this is blockquote

    this is code

this one, we all know, is em

    this is strong

      this is ul

      here is ol

  • and finally, here is li
  • And though I’ve tried using the backtick in the past, it has never worked for me. Does anyone know how to use that?

#634150

Wolf ol is this what you mean by tags? Thanks!

MOMMYOFTWO- Have you ever considered the possibility of Home Schooling? This is becoming a viable option for families who do not like mainstreaming, or can not find a place for their children to learn. The advantage is a one to one, instead of one teacher with many students. Learning can take place in a more creative and original environment. Keep looking for an appropriate school for your daughter, good luck.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. As far as a school in Manhattan – That’s definately an option but I would have to wait for a few years. I can’t send a four year old on a bus to the City. As far as homeschooling goes – then they miss out on the social aspect. I’m hearing good things about Prospect although it’s not co-ed. How do I find out how religious these schools really are – I’ve heard, and who knows if things like this are ever true, that in some of these schools you can’t have a TV, etc…Do I just flat out ask the school?

#634157

MommyOfTwo-

A TV in the house is not a deal-breaker with Prospect.

If you are considering it (good move, IMHO) he are a couple of pieces of info:

-The girls wear uniforms which are tzniusdik by all standards. I don’t think a four-year-old would need a uniform yet.

-The parents are from across the spectrum, but I don’t know of any mothers who don’t cover their hair or do wear pants.

-The administration is excellent.

-The sooner you speak to them, the better. It can be tough to get into some schools, just because of the demand for available spaces.

-You can speak to the administration about questions and concerns, but of course put your best foot forward (dress-wise, etc.) Try to speak to other parents and (if you have contacts) administration members with questions that you would prefer not to bring up on an interview.

-If you end up sending your daughters there, it would be no surprise if you were pleased enough that you keep them there thru high school.

Once again, hatzlacha raba.

MommyofTwo – if you are considering an all girls school, you might like Shulamit (or is it Shulamis? I dont know what they are officially) better. Its more modern, great education with a very diverse student body.

The only caveat I know with them is that they generally attract a crowd of immigrants. That is NOT a bad thing, just something I know people have pointed out to my sister when she was searching for schools.

Mommy of two. Please, please disregard the recommendations of bored@work and I can only try. They mean well but the school they recommend hasn’t been the way they describe it in 15 years. I know many who have gone there. At best, the kids do ok but are miserable. At worst, they end up hating frum people and rebel. Don’t put your child in a such a situation.

Bais Yaakov Drav Meir is the gold standard. Lev Bais Yaakov is a fine up and coming school.

If you prefer modern, Yeshiva of Flatbush is excellent and Barkai is a good school though they are very expensive.

you still didn’t explain your screen name.

what does “dont have internet” mean?

#634167

Moshejoe-

I believe you mean well, but this is absolutely the wrong way of going about it.

If you have specific info you should let MommyOfTwo know of it PRIVATELY, and not besmirch an entire school publicly without providing information.

I am giving you the benefit of the doubt because I agree that Bais Yakov D’Rav Meir is also an excellent school.

I have some shaiches to Prospect, and I can clearly state that my info is up-to-date.

The parents of the girls who go there are overwhelmingly happy with the education and hanhala.

The girls who graduate are overwhelmingly well-educated, good, frum girls without the issues you described.

I have no idea where you got your info from, but it’s wrong.

Many of the current students are second and third generation Prospect kids, and many of them have the same teachers their mothers did.

MommyOfTwo-

I think the best advice I can give is to speak to parents who currently have their kids in a school – one of them is worth hundreds of anonymous bloggers.

I thought IMHO means “in my heilige opinion” :-{)>

I’m still not sure how to do the tags business…

Can anyone please provide detailed step-by-step instructions for the technologically retarded amongst us?

Thanks!

I think what I figured out (I guess I’m right cuz it worked…)

is you type in “em” (instead of the quotes, type <> but I can’t do it because then it will show up as italicized and you won’t see the “em”…) then you type in what you want italicized and then type “/em” So it will look like this

“em” this is italicized “/em”

(exept that it’s with the < > instead of ” “)

If the following comes out in italics that means my instructions are good, otherwise I just succeeded in making a fool of myself!

Hello!

MosheJoe, Like I can only try said, this really is not the appropriate place to bash a school. As someone with close connections to Prospect Park I can testify to all the positive that was said about it. I went there starting from PreK through the end and although at times the work may have been hard i had an amazing school experience. So Mommyoftwo, i would definitely recommend considering Prospect for your daughter! B’Hatzlacha!

Keepinenterained, it is very likely that you indeed had an amazing school experience. I will be the first to tell you that there was a point in time when it was a top of the line school.

My intention was not to bash. Mommyoftwo asked for advice. Bored and Try offered their glowing recommendations which is their right, even though their opinion is in the minority. I offered my perspective to make sure mommyoftwo is not misled.

I wholeheartedly agree with ‘I can only try’ in one respect. Ask the parents who have their kids in any particular school and you will find out the truth.

prospect is an unbelievable school and i will not allow any lashon hara on this website.

#634181

MommyOfTwo-

While I value the relative anonymity we have on this site, “Mrs. Try” and I would be willing to be contacted by you and/or your husband to give more specific information. As I said, I have some shaiches to Prospect. I would of course request that you keep our personal information confidential.

I don’t know what Moshejoe’s motivations are for slandering the school with dishonest and ludicrous inuendo and smears.

What he is saying and the way he is going about saying it clearly violates several tenets of the Chofetz Chaim’s hilchos loshon horoh.

In addition this is a perfect example of makeh rei’aihu beseser – one who hits secretly, in this case attempting to publicly sully the name of a school with dozens of dedicated principals teachers and other staffers.

I say ludicrous as well, because no school that turns out kids as he described would stay in business, be it chasidish, litvish, sefardi, modern orthodox or ultra-orthodox.

I am NOT urging you to send your daughter specifically to Prospect – no school, regardless of how good it is fits all students.

There are many other fine schools, one of which may be more to your liking, or a better fit.

I am urging you to treat Moshejoe’s comments with the same validity as you would an anonymous phone call received in the middle of the night, with a whispering voice on the other end saying the things he said.

Hi,

I highly recommend East Midwood Hebrew Day School as a school with a warm accepting atmosphere, and a strong academic program. Two of my children have gone there and we consider ourselves fortunate to have discovered it after negative experiences with one of the more prestigious yeshivas in the neighborhood.

#634183

Mommyoftwo,

When asking the parents who have their children in any particular school what they think of that school, it is important to make sure to focus on asking those parents who have children presently in the younger grades. If you ask parents of children in the older grades or who recently graduated for their opinion, the reports you receive may be based on their experiences from a long time ago which occurred when other people were running the school. It would be as if you are asking about a school which no longer exists.

My suggestion. Make an appointment to meet with the principal, director or whoever of whatever school you may be interested in. It is enrollment season. This is the time of the year when schools EXPECT people to call and ask questions. Why ask an anonymous person who might have a personal vendetta against a particular school, or worse, never heard of it, but have nothing better to do with their lives then say something negative about anyone or anything. Call the school. Ask parents. Ask kids in the school. Stand outside the school by dismisal one day and ask to your hearts content. Then go and evaluate the answers and weight them against your expectations.
