What type of girls are applying to Lahav? Can you compare the seminary to any other? My daughter is applying, and I’m getting conflicting reports.

i’m assuming ur from lakewood because the interviews are there tom.! dont worry, relax! be yourself! it doesn’t really feel like an interview its more of a discussion most girls come out feeling great! let us know how it goes! and if you have any q’s about it i’m all answers!

lahav can’t be compared to any other school! thats the whole beauty of it- it has no type! i was just there and came back last week. it was AMAZING! (sry to sound typical) it is not your typical school you grow and internalize so much and make choices on your own about who you want to be- no pressure from anyone- They hand you the tools for growth and life its up to each girl as to how they want to use it! and- what conflicting reports- care to share? maybe i can help clear them up?

We are looking for a solid BY type of seminary. I’m not hearing that’s the general element they had this year.

I’m having mine on Thursday and I’m so nervous lol

bygirl93 – could you tell me more about Lahav, it’s a pretty new seminary so idk much about it…

ontheball- the girls were from bais kaila, machon, mesores, by drav meir, bloppy, bybp, breiwers, by monsey, byramapo, tag, bais shaindel, bnos bais yaakov(lakewood) – and some other schools- most of the girls were the solid by type- but every school has a few girls that are not- thats just the way it works- hope i helped!

happy2bme- breath! relax! don’t be nervous! it was from sept 13th to january 15th- lets see- a typical week was- davening, breakfast and breakfast was at 8:15 (sun-8:30). sunday and monday we had class most of the day- with a 1 or 2 hour break for lunch- then sunday night was vaadim- amazing speakers etc. monday night was kosel class- we had a class about the kosel, or tefillah or whatev- she let us choose what we wanted to focus on and then they took us to the kosel- imagine davening maariv at the kosel every monday night! tuesday morning we had classes and the afternoon we had off and then that night we had chaburos (going to teachers houses-) wednesday morning we had class- then lunch then a class on kuntrus hachesed and then we had chesed which you can either find your own family or they will place you- and every once in a while we had group chesed- like yad eliezer (tomche shabbos) or aleh (special childrens facility) and then that night we had regular classes and study hall- they give you plenty of time to do the work they give with tutors and so that you dont have to do it on your own time! THURSDAY! my favorite day! tiyul day! they have the most awesome tiyuls! they make eretz yisroel and your classes come alive while still having an amazong fun factor! friday you might have classes or you might not- it depends on what time shabbos is. shabbatons- they took us to bnei brak, sorotzkin/ meah shearim, ramat shlomo, arad, tzfas etc! they were a lot of fun and great experiences! lets put it this way if i had the choice all over again i would still pick LAHAV! even though it was a half year everyone takes everything in and adjusts right away and when you leave you dont feel like your leaving in middle- you feel completion- if this is your only oppurtunity to go to sem in israel- grab it! and even though i had whole year options i still would pick lahav all over again! any other q’s or concerns?

please answer the following questions about darchei binah:

1.What were you or other people at the seminary looking for in a seminary when deciding?

2.How important is the interview/How intense,etc.- reading of rashi?

3.What is the style of teaching? Discussion, lecture, classroom setting, chavrusa??

4.What type of classes are there?

    5.Can you choose your classes?

6.How much work is there? Tests?

7.Is the seminary about getting as much done as possible or learning as much as possible out of each thing? Are tests and work a side factor and they really just want the girls to learn or is work a big factor of importance to the seminary?

8.How hard is it? How hard is hard?

10.The girls who go there is their focus on learning more textually or learning more and growing more spiritually?

12.Are they all about the outside or do they focus on the inside as well?

13.How big of a mix of people is it? Is it hard to find your place?

14.Do they go on trips? Do they go to Europe?

15.Are their rules strict? What are some of their rules?

    16.Do they have a uniform?

17.What is the status of the dorm?

More questions about Lahav. Does anyone know what kind of students go there? Are they very academic or not really into learning so much? Is the program demanding and difficult? Will there be an option this year to stay 2 months longer? Do you have to find your own place each shabbos or does the sem stay together? What about Yom Tov?

    #1004335
    bygirl93

it depends- there is a new principal now so i don’t know how the academics will be but if you were accepted they obviously feel you can handle it. and they care more about the will to learn than the ability to learn. if you want to do it you can- and if you can’t they will help you do as much as you can to the best of your ability. if you want it to be demanding and difficult- and stress about it you can. but last year most of the girls were pretty chilled about it- including me. there were a few girls though who did make it difficult for themselves. I don’t think there will be an option- but i don’t know. yom tov we stayed together except for 2nd days sukkos where girls either asked to be placed or had their own places. on a typical shabbos if it’s not a shabbaton you can find your own place, go with friends, or asked to be placed, the dorm does remain open if there are a few other girls who want to stay also. but if not they try to help find someplace to sleep also. Hope this helped! 🙂 if you have any more q’s you know where to find me! 😉

happy2bme- to lahav? or to israel at all? if its not too personal- y?

Senior License- it depends- with touro i am getting 18 credits because lahav is only one semester- some of my friends did mji and they r also getting credits- you get them based on your marks- for touro its just a pass or fail that matters because its not the israel option- its just stam transfer credits- if you want you can email the office at [email protected]

I only applied to Lahav cuz it’s a half year seminary…I feel like it’s gonna be too easy for me i heard it’s not so academic…but I still might go I’m not so sure yet…about the credits thing, I thought lahav isn’t part of touro’s israel option?

    #1004340
    bygirl93

if its ur only chance- take it! you can make it academic if you want- it’s not part of the israel option but you can still get regular transfer credits- it’s basically just a few less than the israel option and ur marks dont go on ur permanent transcript as numbers- only as pass or fail- so it won’t ruin a good transcript-

    #1004341

I checked into it and you can get college credit from Lahav and I heard the teachers and the program is amazing. I also heard they have a very nice group coming this year.

Senior license, I know a lot of girls that were accepted, but not many that are going. The girls that you know that are going are academic? Going to learn and grow? My daughter got in, but I’m very hesitant……..

Lahav is a place to learn and grow- they only accept people who they feel already have the will to do that- and they teach them the tools-

k I have a few questions about Lahav:

    1)what’s the dorms like?

    2) how’s the food? lol

    3) what’s the uniform? could you wear any color shirt or cardigan?

    4) how are the girls there?

    #1004353

1)don’t know about the dorm because they are moving- but you would be surprised what you eventually get used to and could live with! but i don’t think you should worry about that- they r working on getting good dorms.

    2) the food was AWESOME!!!

    3) we had a dress code- button downs- pleated skirt- at least 3 inches below the knee- any cardigans etc. sweatshirts cant have words-

    4) you are talking to one of them!!! they r awesome!!! trust me!!

Also, about how many girls are there? what do you do on Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Succos?

    #1004355
    bygirl93

last year there were 28, this past year (my year) there were 60,- so I really don’t know how many girls- but i think they want about 40.

on rosh hashanah and yom kippur we were in school- you could get permission to go out if you have family- they find places for you to daven- but you have to pay for your seat- some meals will be given in school and some you can eat out if you want- or you can also asked to be placed somewhere to eat- and succos first days we were in school- we had our own sukkah and some of the faculty ate with us- and we also ate by their houses. second days you can go out- but the dorm was open if a group of girls wanted to stay in! Hope all this helps!!!

Trust me, it’s helping lol…Is there a dress code on Shabbos? Also, I heard they don’t give tests, is that true?

We didn’t have one- everything just had to be tznuis and not crazy- they didn’t really like babydoll tops though. We just had finals- which really weren’t bad- we only had 5 or 6- because those were the classes we got credits for- there were quizzes and preperaton sheets though- and you have a different principal so I can’t say it will be the same!

    #1004358

so you don’t need to wear pleated skirts on Shabbos?

Hi! I’m going to Lahav this coming year. I’m really nervous because only one other girl from my city is going. I never went to sleep away camp so I don’t have any out-of-town friends that most teenage girls have. Anyone know for sure if they are going to Lahav this year? Anyone know how many girls they accepted this year?

One more question Bygirl93-when you came home, you signed up for college? is it bad timing to make it into a program like smack in middle of the year? and thanks soooo much for all the information really sounds good!

So it happens to be I didn’t start college right away.. but loads of other girls did and were fine!!!! and its not like smack in middle b/c the way colleges work is by semester, so as long as you are there to start the semester you are starting with e/o else

    #1004365

BY girl ur ressuring me thank you! but someone just told me that they cram a lot in and there is never free time because theyre packing a years worth of material into a few months. is this true? also whats the deal with staying til pesach?
