Wondering if anyone agrees that ayin tova has qualities that are all encompassing when it comes to the above suggested middos to work on. (and more)

we’re not looking for an “all encompassing” one. one millionth of that is hard enough – can’t you see?

I have an idea… we all can either pick our own one towork on each week or the Mods will TELL us which middah it will be that week. (or they can nominate a CR member to set it out) cuz this thread is so beautiful yet messy that I dont know where to start and will prob give up all cuz I can tdo e/o amazing ideas at once and I cant pick which one cuz e/o is saying s/t else

nu…. mods… what do u have to say??

sounds great! I nominate mdlevine to be in charge of giving out what midah everone should work on. He seems to be amazing at doing chessed.

being as I was nominated by a mod (I am not waiting for a second to the nomination)

    I select:

    small chasadim to others

    reasons:

    small is easy

a whole lot of small by Yidden worldwide adds up to a whole lot of big unity

    ok?

    Let’s begin.

Hi, everyone – I’ve been reading through the thread – still trying to figure out what the midah of the week is. Ames, can you so kindly explain what I we working on this week?? The Dvar Torah was amazing and I think I am going to print it out, if I may. I hope it will be a remainder not to waste time.

ames – whatever works for everyone is fine by me. :o) I saw the comment by mod55 and said why not. I didn’t notice your subsequent posts.

As long as people are working in anyway to improve themselves and are sharing Torah thoughts to do this (and certainly by learning Torah) they are doing much more than a small chesed not only for themselves but for everybody. – essentially, these are not mutually exclusive areas to work upon.

in the list that you provided you can group certain areas together (see below as an example) and as a person improves one area, the others areas should follow along.

example for someone who masters point #7: they are going to be more proactive in avoiding #’2 and 4, and increasing #’s 3, 5, 6 and 8 which will ultimately or at least should hopefully positivelty impact #1)

    1) ga’ava (includes: 3,4,5,6,8)

    2) leitzanut (includes: 2,4,7)

    3) small chasadim to others (includes: 1,2,4,5,7,8)

    4) not answering back when someone insults/hurts/embarrasses you (includes: 1,2,3,6,7,8)

    5) show appreciation for small kindnesses (includes: 1,3,6,7,8)

    6) thanking Hashem (includes: 1,4,5,7,8)

    7) utilizing our time better (includes 2,3,4,5,6,8)

    8) beig happy with what we have (includes: 1,3,4,5,6,7)

regarding the trait for next week: what ever is choosen is fine by me. :o)

First off, thank you ames for the truly amazing dvar torah!

When the mishnah says wasting time, I assume it means from learning. After all, we have a chiyuv to learn yomum vilayla, and we are only excused from learning when performing a mitzvah or vital duty (raising kids, making a parnassah, etc.) Besides for those times, we are michuyiv to spend all our time learning. So for this week, I think we should all be mekabal on ourselves to spend some time that we usually waste learning. A good time to do this would be for those of us who take buses. Bring a sefer with you, or load up an MP3 player with your favorite shiurim (I’m pretty sure there used to be a topic in CR filled with links to Torah websites). After all, it really is ridiculous how much time we waste every day. With just a few minutes a day you can learn an incredible amount!

shkoyach: you can start with simply taking 15 minutes that you usually waste and making a seder then. It doesn’t have to be anything lumdish, there’s plenty of light and interesting english seferim out there!

Ames, you’ll give the shiur you r good at it! (now i made u smile :))

ames-thanks for the divrei chizuk. I think sometimes it’s a challenge to define for oneself what wasting time really is. (I think there are also different gender obligations). Sometimes I’d rather read an inspiring book (I happen to love mussar/middos improvement genres) than do household chores, but then I’m not being honest with myself about how I should be spending my time….Insights?

I’d also really like to hear success stories.

ames-thanks-not sure if my last post got in–s/t happened when i hit send. I definitely feel that I have balance in that most of the time (don’t ever feel like a slave- I quite enjoy all components of building my home-{hate hypocricy so i try vigorously to live what i teach}).just hard sometimes to be totally intellectually honest.appreciate much the introspection it leads to.

when speaking about laziness…i have a very good story a story with a lesson.

I once had a cleaning lady cleaning my house…whatever she did, she did with a lazy and sour face! like she is working for free, i really got mad! and sent her home! after she left i learned the BIG LESSON we are all working for hashem… We dont want to look like that cleaning lady whenever i do a mitzvah i try thinking of that cleaning lady and automaticly i do it with simcha!!! Imagine the cleaning lady worked for money, money comes and goes! but we work for Hashem!!!!! The schar is Much Much More! let’s not forget this lesson!!!!!and not be lazy when we do a mitzvah!! Hope you all enjoyed this story!!! Ames, here is my story lol 🙂
