RambaM lists a mitzvah to know Hashem rather than believe, right?

    @Avira

    1. We feed akum mipnei darchei sholom, and this story is an amazing example of why this is important.
yes but this wasn’t agav aniyei yisrael.

    2. Pikuach nefesh?
He could have just announced that the bread was poisoned.

    3. Great question! No idea. Could be that this way every single jew would definitely be saved.
As would be through my suggestion.

Part – “wirh” doesn’t just mean in the same soup kitchen. It means Jewish philanthropy, out in the open, must include non jews, to keep peace. This is why jewish givirim routinely give to non jewish organizations. Anonymous donations, however, would be a problem.

2 – it’s a good point. I don’t know the whole story, or even if it’s historically true…hard to ask a kasha on poskim from a r. shmuel kunda tape, amazing as he was.

    Dear Avira,

How does anybody know what they believe? The Rambam has very strong wording for teshuvah gemura. He doesn’t say by the mitzva of emunah anything like that. So who is to say that I believe more than you, or more than any self proclaimed atheist? Maybe we all are believers, maybe none of us are. This has to be wrong. A mitzvah from HKB”H can’t be so wishy washy.

If someone says they don’t keep mitzvos they don’t lose their chezkas kashrus. So how do we accept that the atheist is an atheist? And if he really is an atheist, and then we can assume that he lies for his own benefit (Because there is no Higher Authority in his mind.) so maybe he is lying and is not an atheist.

And, I’m totally confused why this thread is about lo sichanem. The commenter was not talking about idol worshippers.

Nom, im sorry to hear that emunah is “wishy washy” for you. People can decide what it is they believe in. People die for their beliefs.

Your question of how can there be a mitzvah to believe, is disproven by its existence; evidently if if the Torah writes that we must believe in it, we are able to and to discern between wishy washy doubtful faith and real faith.

It’s a pity that you don’t believe in your own capacity to believe. That’s your real issue.

    Dear Avira,

I’m not talking about myself. Your are missing out on a deep sugya. Oh well.

It’s always fun when people who have no clue what the story was, bring Up Rav Aharon’s battle on how to teach chumash.

Rav Aharon and Rav Moshe were constantly trying to educate their peers on how much of yiddishkeit will be lost, if people don’t dedicate their time to Limud HaTorah. This especially true with dayos.

The Ramban is in Parshas Shelach.

The Rambam is in Hilchos Teshuva 2:2

    The questions stand.

What does lo sichanem have to do with non idol worshippers?

What is the threshold of fulfillment for the first mitzvah?

Or someone could just explain why do we believe an atheist.

    Dear Avira,

We witness his words. We do not witness his thoughts.

If the problem of the kofer is merely him saying so, than that would be a coupe de grace to all these debates. As long as the skeptic is silent, than he is the in line with all the commandments.

I don’t accept this point as the truth, yet there doesn’t seem to be an argument against it.
