Some of the mods have been talking (in secret mod language of course), and we decided that we would like to implement a new rule in the YWN Coffee Room.

    The rule is simple:

    TYPE IN NORMAL ENGLISH

Keep your text language for texting.

    What are your thoughts?

First of all, rather than “normal” English, I would prefer to see posts in correct English.

Second of all, this isn’t a new rule, it just hasn’t been widely enforced. (see http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/rules-of-the-ywn-coffee-room-please-read)

5 – Please try to post in a language somewhat resembling English. Visit spellcheck.net if you need help. Mozilla Firefox browser also offers a spellcheck option. If your comment is not written in normal English, it will not be approved.

And finally, the title of this thread should be:

NEW CR RULE: Type Words In Normal English

Okay I get the point. Is everyone amazed that I can actually type complete words? Wow, this feels so weird.

Are we allowed to do … dot dot dot? Haifa please answer…

    Mods, I think it’s a great idea.

Which might actually lead you to conclude that you should not go ahead with it.

If you follow my posts you may notice that they are most often of the minority opinion variety. Minority bordering on miniscule, I might add.

    TYPE IN NORMAL ENGLISH

You imply that some posts here are abnormal english, when really they aren’t english at all, just as the phrase ‘normal english’ isn’t…

English is a dynamic language with no language academy. Neither Congress nor Parliament decides what is correct.

Most of the people posting on CR speak a “frum” dialect, which blends many Hebrew and Yiddish words. Just because the Oxford dictionary didn’t hear of a world, doesn’t mean it isn’t a kosher word. While in some countries there is an official dialect and all other dialects and usages are by definition incorrect, that isn’t the case in English. Yeshivish is no more or less proper than the Queens English or Brooklynese or the standard American dialect (spoken in most of America west of the Appalachians and north of the Mason-Dixon line, but not in the places where most orthodox Jews live).

Many times one wants to use a Hebrew or Yiddish word, since English lacks an adequate vocabulary for many Jewish concepts.

see, then you get all the posters with their individual levels of acceptability all arguing whats proper english and what isn’t… Just comment on the posts you cant read for them to please rewrite it; dont make a public debate

    Haifagirl,

Ciief Secratary of Crammer Enforcement Commands,

Personally, I would rather ‘normal English’ than ‘correct’ abnormal English. And I would rather completely abnormal and incorrect English than grammatically correct Swahili. And I would rather run on sentences than run off ones.

Also, I’m not sure if your post is a badly formed persuasive essay, or an unfinished edict, I and therefore cannot grade it appropriately at this time.

Please see me in my office.

Incorrigible; semi-retarded; eccentric; perhaps a woman; not Mod 80. Sometimes only a bit over the top.

Call me crazy, but I think restricting posters like purplicious and superme to strictly correct usage kind of of takes away from the style of their writing…sometimes sacrifices of usage have to be made for the sake of style, y’know…

    Your crazy.

Oh thanks Curiosity!! Believe me, it’s hard!! I have to reread everything ten times!! Plus the capitals and apostraphes… Hope the mods are happy… Only in one thread am I doing regular typing, not correct, just because I’m writing a lot there..

Don’t get me wrong…I do think it’s incumbent on all people to have a working grasp of the rules of grammar and usage of their native tongue. I just think it’s within the individual’s right to choose to exercise said knowledge – provided it exists. That is key.
