You rely on that cRc from Chicago?
Theres an older larger well established CRC in Brooklyn.
October 27, 2010 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #704664cherrybimParticipantCRC from Chicago is extremely professional and reliable, and they have a wonderful website.
From Wikipedia:
The Chicago Rabbinical Council (or cRc) is the largest regional Orthodox rabbinical organization in America, located in Chicago, Illinois. The cRc is a not-for-profit offering a wide variety of Jewish services including kosher product supervision and kosher certification. Kosher certification is available around the world and throughout the year, including Passover supervision.
The cRc is also involved in community relations, funeral standards legislative issues, singles programming, youth education, and other activities benefiting the Jewish and general communities.
The cRc provides a beth din, a court of rabbis who are experts in Jewish law. In addition to dealing in the area of Jewish divorce, the Jewish court deals with Jewish adoption, conversion, certification of Jewish status, cases of mediation, and legal disputes
CRC website: http://www.crcweb.org
You can’t get this type of info from the NY CRC. In fact, you can’t get any info from NY CRC, website or not.
October 27, 2010 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #704665so rightMemberWho cares about a website? The NY CRC is widely known for their high standards of Kashrus and is widely accepted. The Chicago is not so familiar.
October 27, 2010 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #704666Pashuteh YidMemberSo right, you mean the Chicago Rabbinical Council of NY is more reliable?
October 27, 2010 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #704667SJSinNYCMemberThe Chicago cRc is absolutely known and very reliable. They are well known for dealing with flavorings and additives (at least in the kashrus world – people who don’t know anything out of their daled amos of NY probably don’t know them).
October 27, 2010 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #704668abcd2ParticipantDear so right and helpful. Sorry to point out but you are unfortunately very unaware The CRC chicago has been around for decades and has many talmidie chochomim as its members. It is completely unaffiliated with crc in NY which is basically a Satmar entity. Anybody in the midwest and california knows about them and they also certify many national and commercial food products that you can buy all across the US (including in many supermarkets right here in ny)you can find many of their certified products even in heimishe stores . They are an equal equivalent of OU OK Star-k Kof-k etc.. albeit on a smaller scale. You probably have even relied on their hechsher or some their supervisory rabbonim who might work for multiple Hechsherim without even realizing it.
October 27, 2010 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #704669apushatayidParticipantFamiliarity does not correlate to reliability. cRc has reputation of being very reliable.
October 27, 2010 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #704670cherrybimParticipantso right – “The NY CRC is widely known for their high standards of Kashrus”
CRC NY is not one of the top five kashrus agencies; CRC Chicago is.
Since you sat that the NY CRC is widely known for their high standards of Kashrus and is widely accepted and is familiar, who is the director of CRC NY and how do you know which products and establishments they give a hechsher to?
Are they makpid on Yashan flour? NO
Do they alert the public when there is a problem in a hechsher like the other kashrus agencies do? NO
And do they need to rely on the OU for any of their hechsherim on product/ingredients? YES
October 27, 2010 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #704671YW Moderator-80Memberyes i rely on the cRc from chicago
it IS widely accepted, at least in the midwest, i dont know about the rest of the world.
there WAS a time, a number of years ago that the cRc had a completely different makeup and was somewhat questionable. that has changed completely
the Av Bais Din is HaRav Gedalia Dov Schwartz
October 27, 2010 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #704672myfriendMemberCRC, based in New York, is the Hisachdus HaRabbonim (Central Rabbinical Congress of the U.S. & Canada). They are affiliated with the Badatz in Yerushlayim and have a Beis Din, one of the most reliable hechsheirim, and other functions. Who is the other one in Chicago?
October 27, 2010 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #704673Rak Od Pa'amMemberThe Chicago is not so “”familiar.””” did you mean “famous” “well known”? Well that all depends who you talk to
For the puzzled the NYC CRC the previous posters were referring to is
The cRc is
Chicago Rabbinical Council,

October 27, 2010 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #704674so rightMembercherrybim:
HaRav Yitzchok Glick shlita is the director of the Kashrus division of the CRC. His office is right across the Hudson River (if you are in Manhattan).
Sure they alert when theres a problem. But due to their very high standards, it has been almost unheard of that a CRC certified product or establishment had any issue. (It happened, but extremely rarely — far less than any comparable organization.)
Everyone relies on OU for at least some basic staples.
Mod 80:
When did the Chicago cRc clean up and become more reliable?
October 27, 2010 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #704675YW Moderator-80Memberwouldnt be proper to discuss
also never “cleaned up”, there was nothing to clean
but it did become more reliable
lets say: a long time ago
October 27, 2010 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #704676Pashuteh YidMemberNo one got my line. 🙁
October 27, 2010 7:25 pm at 7:25 pm #704677squeakParticipantThis is shameful
October 27, 2010 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #704678popa_bar_abbaParticipantI like this.
I’m not sure how the existence of a NY hashgacha with the same initials has any bearing on how reliable the CRC of chicago is.
In any event, kashrus in NY is much worse than in chicago. In chicago, there is one hashgacha and almost all the establishments are under it. If you get dropped, you’re done.
In NY, if you get dropped, you pick up the next one. I would never eat anywhere in Brooklyn. (except the pizza shops, you can’t get good pizza anywhere else, and there aren’t as many issues with pizza.)(And subsational, that’s also worth an exception.)(And if you happen to want cholent on tuesday- what could be wrong with cholent?)
You don’t see kashrus scandals in Baltimore, you see them in the NY. (For me, monsey is NY)
October 28, 2010 1:17 am at 1:17 am #704679d aMemberJust reminding you about the new, free, very useful app that this thread was started for:
October 29, 2010 2:43 am at 2:43 am #704680cherrybimParticipant“HaRav Yitzchok Glick shlita is the director of the Kashrus division of the CRC.”
Who?
“Sure they alert when theres a problem.”
Name one; never heard or read of a CRC NY alert; the OU is constantly keeping people current and aware of product error or fraud.
“But due to their very high standards”.
Please educate us about their high standards and how they differ from the OU.
I was once at the OU and talking to an officer and I mentioned that certain heimishe hashgachos do not rely on the OU, especially OU oil.
It turns out that the heimishe oil was actually produced by an OU hashgacha company and labeled with the heimishe brand and heimishe hashgacha.
“Everyone relies on OU for at least some basic staples.”
Even hashgachos with very high standards; oh my?
And remember when the little boy got deathly sick when he ate a heimishe pareve cookie. It turned out that the cookie was milachic and the lad was allergic to dairy. Where was the heimish mashgiach? So much for heimish hashgacha having highest standards.
October 29, 2010 10:35 am at 10:35 am #704681HelpfulMemberWho said anything about heimish hashgochos in general? CRC (Hisachdus) is one of the most reliable, yes, with greater standards. Your ignorance of it is irrelevant.
October 29, 2010 1:56 pm at 1:56 pm #704682popa_bar_abbaParticipant“You rely on that cRc from Chicago?

“CRC (Hisachdus) is one of the most reliable, yes, with greater standards. Your ignorance of it is irrelevant.”
Maybe in light of your second statement, you will take back your first statement. Ignorance of it is indeed irrelevant, whether of the one in chicago, brooklyn, or the Chinese Rabbinical Council.
October 29, 2010 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #704683SJSinNYCMemberPopa, when my family moved to monsey almost 30 years ago, there was one kosher pizza place. Well, sort of. They kept sneaking in non-kosher cheese.
They lost their hashgacha. People were really upset so they implemented a mashgiach tmidi. Didn’t work because the owner paid off the cheese guy to put stickers on before delivering the cheese that had proper hashgacha.
Be careful of pizza LOL.
October 29, 2010 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #704684HelpfulMemberMy first was just a question, not a statement.
October 29, 2010 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #704685squeakParticipantpopa,
It’s actually the Chinese Rice Checkers, and we should ALL be grateful for them. If not for them, rice would be the next thing on the “do not consume” list.
October 29, 2010 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #704686popa_bar_abbaParticipantNo, Chinese Rice Checkers is a game. You’re thinking of the Chili and Rolaids Consumers.
Helpful:
I’m sorry. I must have misunderstood your first statement. You intended it as a question. Like, “Does anyone know if people use the CRC of chicago?”
October 29, 2010 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #704687apushatayidParticipant“Chicago Rabbinical Council of NY”
Pashuta. I got it.
The “sticker hechsherim” are absolutely reliable. In fact, they make sure to use only the highest quality glue, on their stickers to make sure the stickers remain firmly attached to the packaging 🙂
