Am I the only one who finds it highly offensive and very wrong for orginizations to use kids as a means of collecting money? They hand out beautiful color catalogues of prizes to be won for collecting. The prize value is about 10%. The kids bug parents becuase all they want is the prize. The same orginizations go to all the camps/schools in the same area and I have between 3-8 sets of collectors at my door (summer is usually quieter – fewer kids around) collecting for the same orginiazation my kids are!

I do not allow my children to do the same. I give my tzedaka where I choose, and I don’t want them pressuring our very non-affluent neighbors. Dollars add up – especially when its a “-thon” of some sort!

Am I only in disdaining this practice??

No. I believe most people in my neighborhood do not participate in these schemes. Nor do I allow my children to go collecting (there was a thread regarding this before, IIRC).

Once i was walking home from work in the winter totally covered in winter gear and two young boys collecting came up to me on the street and ask if i wanted to buy some chocolates they were selling for school they had no way of knowing if i was jewish or not sadly in this day and age you cannot send your kids into the street by themselves as we saw last week tragically.

Children are sent out collecting by many (if not most) of their Yeshivos to train the children in the great mitzvah of collecting tzedakah. It is a wonderful way to teach the children to collect tzedakah while at the same time raising tzedakah.

In New York children collect door to door, sent by their Yeshivos and approved by their parents (the kids are coming from their homes after Yeshiva) to collect tzedakah all the time.

Oh. I hope they go in groups.

I was talking about the “mitzva” of collecting, and how they need to learn how to do so for when they grow older. Who says the schools don’t teach a trade?

My husband and I do not allow our children to collect we get allot of protests from our kids and even they got a word or two in school and I tell my kids whom ever has a problem let them call me. First door to door collecting. Crazy!!! Second by the time my big ones come home pp r putting little ones to sleep I know how annoying it is when the bell rings during super bath and bed time everybody runs to the door. And most important why we don’t let they r selling raffles or tickets whatever and not given a pushka to put $ into its a very big achraus tzedoka $ so I have to have it one my head if some gets lost or a baby plays w it….

No, it’s a terrible way to teach children to collect “tzedakah”. Did you ever see the administrator’s children schnorring door to door; I haven’t.

I have. I even saw the Rosh Yeshiva’s children collecting door to door.

I never felt comfortable letting my children go collecting money. I would write out a check myself and give it to them. In light of the recent tragedy I think that parents should accompany their children while collecting.
