Anyone live in or have any information on available options for a Chassidish family to move out of town?
    What are the benefits? Disadvantages?
By out of town I mean out of NY/NJ area.

The following towns outside the NY Metro area have a Chasidic community:

    Bloomingburg, NY
    Sullivan County, NY
    Baltimore, MD
    Jersey City, NJ
    Union City, NJ
    Los Angeles, CA
    Montreal, QC

I would add Cleveland and possibly Chicago to the list….it all depends on what you mean by a Chassidish comunity.. There are rebbeles all over the U.S. who dress in chassidish lvush and give themselves a title (e.g. the South Beach Rebbe”) but its not what I think the oP has in mind. Likewise, there are enclaves of established chassidus living in towns distant from their rebbe.

“By out of town I mean out of NY/NJ area..””

I stretched it a bit to include Cleveland (where there are small green sprouts of chassidus in a desert of Litvish hashkafah). It also has the Browns, Indians and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Antwerp is WOOT (Waaaaay out of town).

Baltimore is the closest and most developed Chassidishe community 3-4 hour drive from the New York metropolitan area. 4+ Chassidishe Shula. Men’s Mikvaos. Chassidishe Cheder, Kollel and Girls School. Chassidishe Shechita, poskim and Rabbonim, etc.

If you mean Chassidish communities that ALSO have at least one chassidish school the list gets a lot smaller.

Baltimore has Rabbi Eichenstein, Rabbi Taubs shul, Goldbergers, Sternhills, Hertzbergs and the Chassidishe Kollel. The Kollel has 31 Avreichim. Did I mention it’s drivable to and from Baltimore same day (unlike Chicago, Detroit or anywhere else)? Strong Eruv everyone holds of. And we had measles cases too so you know it’s Chassidish.

The vast majority of Baltimore is Litvish / Yeshivish. BH everyone gets along very nicely. Ir HaShalom. Who cares what the President says – he says all sorts of crazy things.

Los Angeles has a large chassidish kollel as well as the LA Chedee which is chassidish (rabbeim teach in Yiddish) and all the other benefits as well. And get along very nicely with other groups. Plus the weather!

The Baltimore Jewish community is known to have the most well rounded, level headed, extremely sweet people. The community genuinely cares for each other. Also, Baltimore isn’t exactly “out of town”, we have tons and tons of shuls and restaurants! There’s a brand new chassidish community that recently moved in and they’re the nicest people. Anybody that talks badly about Baltimore clearly hasn’t been to Baltimore or met anyone from there. They’re one of the most genuine communities in the entire country.

Trump was referring to downtown Baltimore, not the Jewish community (Pikesville).

    How Chassidish are you?

Are you OK with a Nusach Sefard shul where the Rov wears a streimel, throws apples on Shmini Atzeres, and speaks Yiddish but there are perhaps only two or three bekishes in the whole shul? Or do you need a full-on Rebbe with Chassidim following every word, cheder, Yeshiva, girls school, zilber schtock, and tisches and all that?

Since we’re discussing Baltimore, there are several shuls that fit the first description. The second description is something you don’t really find outside of NY/NJ with the exception of Tosh in Motreal. Even Baltimore has a “Chassidishe Kollel” but there’s no Rebbe and it’s socially isolated from the rest of the frum community.

linden nj has 60 families / mt kisco in white plains area / kasho town in bedford hills / and even a pupa town – but your q is very vague and there are so many variables beginning on WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO MOVE OUT? a chasidish family has to have a major reason or reasons to live ir hakodesh metro area

Joseph mentioned Sullivan county, but to be specific Monticello has a fledgling Chasidish community and R’ Yoely Roth (Breslov) is establishing a community in Liberty, NY. Visnitz has a “shtetl” in Kiamesha Lake, NY otherwise known as Gibbers.

The Catskills mountains have great potential as there is a lot of Jewish infrastructure.

Meir: Perhaps better to frame your question as to why a frum yid with a young family would want to STAY in the NYC metro area.

Chicago has about 30+ chassidishe families/2 chassidishe kollelim, Yiddish cheder and a handful of chassidishe Rabbonim.
Upside of living out of town:
    Things are generally quieter.
Less of a social pressure cooker ie life isn’t a constant race to wear/say/do the EXACT same thing as everyone else etc etc / much more room for individuality.

MB10: Not sure why you bumped this thread but a lot may have changed in 18 months of Covid. I would get get an update as to how well a community functioned, what type of instruction did the local yeshivos provide during period they were closed for in-person classes, did the community engage in the type of public health protocols you are comfortable with etc. Some old information may be dated. On the other hand, many felt that Covid increased their desire to relocate to areas with lower population density and more flexibility to raise a family in the event of a future public health crisis.

Syag: Fairly clear. I know several frum families (not Chassidsh) who decided to move out of the NYC metro area to more rural parts of NY/NJ/Conn during Covid. Also, some smaller yeshivos seemed to handle Covid better than larger ones and were able to maintain in-person instruction. Lots of tumult over the past 18 months that may or may not affect relocation decisions Nothing more profound.

Syag: Also, there have been some significant price spikes in certain OOT locations over the past year or two. Ulster and Sullivan counties, for example up as much as 25 percent in a year but that may not be in local areas where the Chassidish enclaves are located. Conversely, Baltimore prices have remained fairly steady

Another factor a chosid would consider is access to food items with heimish hashgachos.
(In Chicago for example there are 3 supermarkets that sell everything heimishe hashgochos.)

3 most popular ones in Chicago are Jewel, Hungarian, and Kol tuv.

Ujm: I think this discussion is about OOT in the US.

I think another big question is about mosdos chasidishe parents would feel comfortable sending to.
For example in staten Island I think people send into BP.
In Baltimore there is a very small chasidishe mosed.
    Bloomingberg is satmar
    Union city is zanz.
.In Chicago there’s veitzner cheder which is in Yiddish and people feel comfortable sending to, and girls go to the regular beis Yaakov.

How did you guys leave out Passaic? There is a vibrant young hassidic and ultra orthodox community. I have many sources in Passaic that tell me there are good manners there.

Last time I checked, Passaic would not be considered OOT by any definition, unless you are operating under a somewhat parochial assumption that the United States is an island off the coast of Brooklyn.

(Whats the difference between Passaic and Baltimore.)

Anansahadi: Passaic? Good manners? Great! Chassidim? Really? Do you mean people with just a gartel? Or the type you would meet in BP?

“Whats the difference between Passaic and Baltimore?”

180 miles and 3.5 hours of driving time

Passaic is roughly 20 miles (30-40 minutes driving time) from 770

Baltimore is about 200 miles and 4 hours driving time from 770. I’d also guess that Baltimore is more like Lakewood in terms of Litvish versus Chassidish.

Gadohadorah: So do you knock of Linden and staten Island?

BTW There is also a small community in Indiana of about a dozen and a half Williamsburg families/anti vax common core. But that probably doesn’t count, as it is totally not an established community. Just living out there between the corn fields with no established mosed or other basic community infrastructure.

Another big question is what type of chassidus? Someone looking for a Satmar type might not like a Chabad community. There is a huge range when it comes to Chassidus.

DaMoshe, most Chasiduses (other than Chanad) are pretty similar to each other. Give or take certain dress or minor minhagim differences.

    Totally agree with ujm.

In Chicago you have all types of chassidish.
    Same in Baltimore/LA.
Mix of Boro park Monsey Williamsburg.

(Chabad is totally a brand of its own.)

Obviously someone looking into Oot is probably not the boxed in type who must be totally surrounded by people who wear the exact same shoelace and even bought it at the same store .
