Who was Book? Maybe he said something and was reported in the name of Rav Kook so the Chafetz Chaim said “Kook, Shmook, it was Book”.
February 2, 2012 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #848661HealthParticipantAvi K – And whom was Shmook?
February 2, 2012 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #848662zahavasdadParticipantKook, Shmook, Book
Works great in English, but it doesnt work as well in Yiddish which the Chofetz Chaim spoke
February 2, 2012 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #848663Tora YidMemberThe Rosh Yeshiva of YU, HaRav Yeruchem Gorelick ZT’L, personally was present and directly heard from the Chofetz Chaim’s own mouth say Kook Shmook derogatorily. He was at the CC with his father who was a talmid of the CC. And Rav Gorelick repeated this story publicly frequently. (Including at the Yeshiva of South Fallsburg, where his son was Rosh Yeshiva.) As did The Rov ZT’L (Rav Berel Soloveitchik ZT’L) relate this story publicly.

But Health got it from Gedolim who said the story is True!

So what do you think of the letter from the Chofetz Chaim’s son that gives honor to Rav Kook? While I understand you heard the story (and learned a very valuable lesson in Kavod HaRabbanim I see) from one Gadol, a different one says otherwise. It is even in writing! So can you live with the fact that a Gadol who says differently than yours is still a Gadol?
February 2, 2012 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #848666susheeMemberWhat corraboration (if any) is there that the alleged letter by Rav Aharon Hakohen is authentic?
February 3, 2012 12:30 am at 12:30 am #848667ToiParticipantzdad- you’re too briliant. maybe he said book and wasnt refering to a written book, he was just adding a ‘beiz’ on to kook and taking off the k. youre insight is without peer.

What proof is there that maybe TorahYid or Health misheard Rav Berel? At least the letter Avi brought up was written down and is not founded on oral testimony!

It was cool how sushe called out exactly what you predicted. Any idea who will win the Super Bowl?
February 3, 2012 2:48 am at 2:48 am #848670Josh31ParticipantThis thread has gone far off topic.
Two Cohanim of great Torah stature who passed away about 80 years ago are being denied Menucha (rest) by some of the posters here.
The purpose of coffee and Coffee Rooms is to deny the living rest, not those who came before us.
We have to stop fighting wars from 100 years ago, accept realities as they are and do the best.
Toi, Sushe, Torah Yid and Health are trying to build a Berlin Wall between the Charedim and all other Jews.
February 3, 2012 2:54 am at 2:54 am #848671Avi KParticipantI personallly know someone who heard Rav Moshe misquoted (he had been present when Rav Moshe made the statement in question). In fact, when Rav Mshe was told that someone misquoted the Chatam Sofer he said “I’m still alive and people are misquoting me”. Rav Scheinberg said that if he had a nickel for every time he was misquoted he would be a rich man. Scientific studies have ben done about this phenomenon and can be accessed on scientificamerican.com. Maybe he said “book, shmook” (in Yiddish it would be close, “buch, shmooch”) about some derogatory book about Rav Kook.
February 3, 2012 3:33 am at 3:33 am #848672Tora YidMemberoptimusprime: It was repeated publicly and on numerous occasions in front of hundreds of people by both Rav Gorelick zt’l — who heard it directly from the Chofetz Chaim — and by Rav Berel zt’l. And this is widely known and can be testified and verified as such by simply getting in touch with many long-time talmidim of either Rav Gorelick or Rav Berel. It is hardly a secret.
February 3, 2012 3:38 am at 3:38 am #848673susheeMemberOptimus,
It is “written down” where exactly? In the coffee room? On some blog? In someone’s filing cabinet? I can write things down too.

To be honest, I have heard of the letter from MY Rebbeim but never actually read it until Avi brought it up. Maybe he can provide the source
Tora Yid
I am in the tri-state area. Let me know some Rabbis who can verify it or better yet provide a tape of it.
February 3, 2012 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #848677zahavasdadParticipantIts funny when a letter is written that you dont agree with its a “Forgery”
